PocketTunes for music and TCPMP for video. The majority of the video I watch on my Zod is XviD or XviD ASD format, which is handled best by TCPMP. I've purchased CorePlayer, but the Palm OS version has a buffering bug which causes video to freeze every fifteen seconds or so.

I normally use PocketTunes and TCPMP, but would love it if AeroPlayer would fix some of their bugs, as it's a better player in terms of controls, than PocketTunes.

Kinoma is very overrated. If I could get my $15 back I would. I voted for TCPMP. I can watch pretty much anything with it including files that Kinoma chokes on. Kinoma is great for YouTube, but most other streaming media I have tried on it will just stutter and skip.
Pocket Tunes is still my favorite for music and streaming audio.

Pocket Tunes 4 and TCPMP. On my zodiac I don't even need to re-encode most downloaded vids. They play fine just dumping them on my SD Card.

Another Pocket Tunes and TCPMP user here.
I did purchase and use Areoplayer way back when I used my beloved T|T (only three palms ago). I like PT's streaming ability although I am still waiting for .asx files to be streamed by any program!
I purchased Kinoma and MMPlayer before TCPMP exists. MMplayer was a huge step forward from Kinoma but now TCPMP is the only one of the three on my palm.

Sucks that with Pocket Tunes 4, NormSoft will no longer officially support the Zodiac.

what are the advantages of ptunes over coreplayer/tcpmp for music? Right now I have coreplayer for audio/video and clie audio player for some audio. Is there anything in ptunes worth checking out?

Core player with bug fix and PT4 with bug fix plus decrease in application file size will be an adequate media player on any hand-held device.

I heard Coreplayer doesn't play in the background so thats a big negative.Yes... Definitely. Just like in TCPMP :(
do most of these play avi file types?
Well, at least I separate MEDIA players to two part, audio players and movie players. Quite many movie player can play avi. It is quite common I think.
does ptunes have background play?
Yes :)

No, Only mmplayer 2, Tcpmp, kinoma and Coreplayer do as these are players are both Video and audio whereas the others are just music players! but what is also important prelude is that of what codec is in the .avi file but these (mmplayer tcpmp etc) should support the codecs you need (i'm pretty sure of this but i really only know tcpmp)
does ptunes have background play?
yes it does and if you want yo can customize it to: turn off the screen while in other progs or not even allow it to background play (no idea why you would though).
Also I just found out today that tcpmp allows for album art! (sorry if anyone else has posted this or knew about it it never occurred to me that it could do it) It happens when you have the jpeg codec included, as long as the picture is named folder.jpg, which inside the folder for the album you want it for, BUT it will not distinguish for different albums in the same folder! so just have your albums in separate folders and only when your are not in full screen.

Cheers pdaman i try not to spam :P
And on the album art for tcpmp it works generally all good and you can crank up the resolution for it to make it look not so grainy.
My tip to get easily on your palm use a ext card reader with something like windows media player 10 or 11 works fine and enable this device supports picture and disable converting file formats.
But another thing i picked up is the slight annoyance when you select a whole directory (eg; card:/audio or card:/music etc) and while changing to the next item on the list it chooses a album art it will come out of full screen and will show the album art in normal un-full screen mode thus maybe letting your palm be susceptible to screen taps etc.
