The zire71 didnt impress me, it could have atleast voice rec so now im back to looking at tg50. and i got some questions on longtime users.. please answer some of em.

1. What is the average battery life of your TG50 based on ___ mins of use with mp3 or voicerec. and in what brightness setting?

2. is the flipcover hard to flip up with one hand?

3. has the stiff keyboard loosen now? one person claimed that his is softer to press after a few weeks of use.

4. Is the voicerecorders low quality mode Good enough for Voices?

5. how does the Speakers volume compare to TT or t665s?

6. Do you use JOT CIC 2.2?

7. is the jogdial easier to scroll now compared to the t665s? t665 was sunked too deep and also positioned to low.

Well I don't have much experience with the TT or the t665, but I will answer as best I can...

1. With MP3s the battery is REALLY good. I went on a family vacation and I listened to it all the way down (3 hours) and all the way back (3 hours) with it on hold (it still plays MP3s but turns off the screen to save battery life) and my battery was only at 70%. I've yet to fully drain the battery and I only plug it in to charge every other night.

2. Umm..yeah...you need one hand to open it and the other to hold the unit. It's not that bad once you get used to it. It is possible to open with one hand, but it looks funny and it never feels like you have a good hold on the unit.

3. Oh yes, quite a bit, I've been using it for 6 days now and it has softened up quite nicely. When I first got it I had to use my thumb nails to push the keys, now I can just use the pads of my fingers.

4. Voice Recorder is of wonderful quality. You can set how sensitive you want it to be. In low sensitivity it picks up my voice while talking directly into it and playsback crystal clear. In high sensitivity I can pick up a car full of people talking and it playsback each voice crystal clear. Very good, better than my Dad's Ipaq.

5. Wouldn't know. By itself the speaker is wonderful, but in a crowded noisy room it is easily lost in the background noise.

6. No, On my Treo 90 I installed Newpen (the same as jot but freeware) to use, but once I got familier with the keyboard, I never used it. The same is true on my TG50. I've yet to have to use it though, keyboard does the job for me.

7. I don't know if it is better than the t665, never had one. But I can tell you that the jog dial is a wonderful thing. I'm left handed so I basically hold the TG backwards and use my index finger to scroll and it fits nicely in that sense. Holding it in my right hand I can tell you that the jog dial appears to be in just the right place, but holding anything in my right hand feels awkward so try it out for yourself.

In all I highly recommend the TG50, it's a great device, and if you have bluetooth already, it's all the more wonderful.

Wonderful. So when pushing with pads of your fingers are you still fast on it? was the treo 90 keyboard better? also does the wavy line bothers you? for me i dont think it wont.

i cant believe you were able to get 6hours of music and just at 70%! thats amazing considering its 4x fast as the t665c. I still have to know how loud the speakers is since the TT is very loud. Im only skeptical about the flipcover now.. i hope somebody comes up with a 3rd party cover, but i can probably just use leather case and take it out. Thanks for the reply! it seems that ill be stuck with sony for a while..any news on 256mb nonsony MS and how much?

Yes I'm still fast on the TG50 keyboard....though it's not as responsive as the Treo 90s....but hey, it's still a wonderful keyboard.

The flipcover isn't that bad. It is removable though it leaves a bit of a hinge behind...but oh well...I like it.

Better in the sense that it was more like the Blackberry, so it was easier for this Blackberry user to deal with. I've concluded that it's just a question of getting used to differing implementations of the same thing.

also does the wavy line bothers you?
Not in the least. Nowadays (I've had the Tg50 since mid-March), I'd have to consciously look for it to be aware of it.

I still have to know how loud the speakers is since the TT is very loud.
I'll try to answer this way. If I'm driving, or in a crowded room, I doubt if the speaker would do it for me. But don't let this be a deal breaker-- I picked up headphones for about $10. Quality of sound is astoundingly crisp, clear, loud, etc. Be sure to get headphones with a volume control on it-- MUCH easier to handle!

Im only skeptical about the flipcover now
Initially, I found it to be a pain in the skleeboop. But I truly appreciate it now. Great self-protection! I keep mine in a holster, so I could remove the cover, but for the added safety, decided to keep it. I hardly notice the mechanical open-flip-cover thing now.

256mb nonsony MS and how much?
Head on over to froogle.com, and tap in
--> 256mb memory-stick
Some pages include Lexar (I think that's the name), and one or two others. Prices seem to be in the $125-$150 range, much better than I anticipated. BTW, always run a search for coupons for the store involved. Just might luck up!

I was decieved by the size of the Tg50s speakers and expected it to be as loud as the TT.

if you can now push with your finger pads, does it hurt? and do you do much typing with it?

i plan to use it for quick todo and datebook entries but i dont know if its gonna be as easy as grafitti, and of course i'll need it for long emails and memos.

One more thing, the Weight seems to be 6.5 oz compared to TT's 5.6oz weight, i already consider TT to be heavy and having to weigh more turns me off. i'll try to find a store where i can personally hold the device without cords and cage. but right now im somethign thats holding me back

Typing with your finger pads does not hurt and with a little familiarity becomes quite fast.

It weighs less than one ounce more than the TT and because it is thinner and includes a screen cover I personally find it acceptable. It is a nice size and does fit well in my front pocket.

does your pocket or shirt pocket sag coz of the weight esp when you walk fast? my t665c at 4.9 oz isnt noticeable even when i run.

Well, my Treo 90 wasn't noticeable either in my pocket. I had it in there with my wallet and they both fit wonderfully. The TG50 is bigger I'll admit and I feel it in my pocket now, but I still fit it in there with my wallet still and it doesn't get in the way at all. I really like this unit.

Im 80% sure im buying tg50,..unless sony comes up with new models, but as for the new palms it just doesnt compete. im excited to have 200mhz and voicerec.

what BT dongle do you use and was it difficult to setup? ill probably use the adapter for power so that i wont have to use cradle and just do syncs wirelessly.

Yeah, no. I've yet to get a Bluetooth dongle for my computer. I spent all my money on my Clie :D. I've been looking at the noname brand ones on ebay, but I'm skeptical about the quality of them...not sure...think I'm going to save up my money for a D-Link or something like that...

Ok i went to circuitcity and played with the TG50 for a few mins. The weight isnt that bad But the KEYBOARD,, OH THE KEYBOARD,,

Sorry but i just cant imagine how it would loosen in time and if it would matter if its loose or not coz its not protruding enough. heck its not even protruding.

i have medium sized finger tips and i dont know how my finger tips could press something thats not protruding even if its soft to press. Can anyone enlighten me on this coz i just cant see how it would improve in time. I love everything but the keyboard.

Yeah, I have to say that I don't think the keyboard loosened up that much (after over a month). And yeah, the buttons are too flat. It's hard to tell you are pressing them sometimes. Worst of all, they're too close together.

I bought it expecting the keyboard to be as easy to use as the NX or at least the NZ. I hope the next generations of sony keyboards are not like this one.

That said, I still love my TG, and it goes wherever I go.

Sneezy, how do you put in data on your tg50 when entering short and long data?

About the keyboard, I am quite happy with the spacing. I guess this is because I am Asian, with little fingers. :)

Nah, I have bigger fingers...long fingers...like Rachmaninov! (Pianists will be in awe, the rest will be clued out) and I can still type wonderfully with the Keyboard. I say, give it a try. Install NewPen for the transition period and if after 30 days, you still don't like it. Well, exchange it for a Tungsten C or something of the sort.

That's what I did with my Treo 90 and I've never looked back

I found myself pressing it really hard while i played with it. but yeah i'll try it out .

the wavy lines at the bottom is really annoying too, i wonder if all units have wavy lines.

Yeah, all the units have the wavy lines, but after using a Treo 90 (which had a huge bright spot in the upper corner, I can tell you that after about a week or two of good usuage you will hardly notice it anymore. I know I don't).

I use the thumboard for all input. I was never really a fan of graffiti; my handwriting is poor and thus recognition was too.

For long input, however, I use my Belkin G700. The driver works well (but not on the NX!).

The wavy lines are almost invisible with the backlight turned down--I keep it low to save power.

It is not almost, it should be invisible...as that is the lighting for the backlit.....

I Played with the TG50 at compusa again. The wavy lines were still visible on the lowest and brightest, maybe on other units?

Another thing, maybe im just imagining or maybe it was a defective unit coz the display at circuit citys tg50 keyboard was almost impossible to press coz it was so low to the board but i was able to press everything on the unit at compusa. i liked the keyboard at compusa and made up my mind that the keyboard was ok. Could it tbe that the unit at circuitcity has been torture tested?

Yeah, I mean those demo models basically go through hell...I looked at a TG50 that was at a best buy...and well...let's just say I took pity on the poor unit...the buttons we mashed in, the screen was all scratched up, the flip-cover had been forced past it's natural stopping point...it was in bad shape...made me wish there was like a rehab center for abused PDAs...those poor things...

Bestbuy has the silliest way of protecting its pda, It still wont stop people from torture testing it. Plus it will turn off some buyers coz they cant even hold the whole damn thing.
