Listening to the podcast now.

I found the mobile Google page earlier this past week while customizing my personal google homepage. Nice that google is moving forward with improving the mobile experience.

I ran the new gmail yesterday. Got it working with the help of a post on PalmAddicts. BUT - I am not liking it. It's a shame because the new Gmaps app is outstanding. But this is not a good application so far:
- cannot access the "soft buttons" from the treo keys
- JVM takes a long time to run and many lags
- it can only run "native" gmail, not the hosted accounts
Maybe 2.0 will be more treo centric and tricked up.

I'm starting to wonder exactly what kind of relationship Google and Palm have. All of the sudden, in the space of a month, we now have two Palm OS apps from Google: Maps and Gmail. OK, Gmail is a Java app, but I can still run in on my Treo.

Alan thanks for the shoutout, sorry I couldn't make the podcast. I've been using Gmail mobile on my Treo 700p and it's actually very good. You're right about how Gmail mobile tries to work just like it does on the desktop, and for me that's a great thing. For instance I get a godaddy stat report sent to my gmail account every day, and have been using Gmail through Chatter. I could never get the report to format correctly on my 700p, or even my 700wx for that matter. Using Gmail mobile on my 700p displays and formats it PERFECTLY. The search feature in Gmail mobile also works amazing, I can search my whole Gmail account for a message, a contact, and it's very fast, and reliable. It's not going to replace Chatter, but it definitely has a purpose and will remain on my 700p.

I've been using StyleTap with my 700wx and it's also very good. I've been using it to use my old Palm PIM apps on my 700wx. I tried moving my tasks from my 700p to my 700wx using Filez under StyleTap, but couldn't get it to work. I copied the files from a TT2 and installed them on my 700wx along with Memo Pad, I prefer the PIM apps from Palm OS, and StyleTap works perfect for this. It's great being able to use Palm OS apps on a Windows Mobile device, you don't have to switch and go cold turkey. I also am running Agendus Professional on my 700wx, there are just some apps that Palm OS is still superior with. StyleTap is a must-have IMO for any long time Palm OS user who still wants to use their apps while switching to a Windows Mobile device. It's like having 2 OS' on my 700wx:)

Ja nice report, glad to see you switch to Mac OS X. Once you go Mac you don't go back:)

Great podcast Alan and Ja.

Just a comment on JA's JAmerican Report. I agree that the MAC OS is a very attractive full size computer or laptop. They are not only gorgeous, but very productive. Ever since MAC OS 10 came out, I have been wanting one. I'm glad your enjoying ours.

And I hope when you decide to finally buy a Treo, I hope it's got Palm OS on it.

Good luck JA, and I enjoyed listening to your report.

I don't think I'm gonna be installing the new gmail java app my my treo. I was another person who was expecting it to be a prc file. I don't use gmail that much anyway.

Setting it up through Snappermail was something I didn't think of... Maybe I'll have to test that out.

After reading a quick blurb on the new Gmail Mobile I was expecting a .prc file also. It's a good thing that I had the IBM JVM already loaded on my Treo. I agree with Jimmie's comments about being able to quickly search for things in my Gmail Inbox. It is fast enough. However, I'm going to keep using VersaMail until the Snapper folks send out the next beta release. (I've been a long time Snapper user. I had been using it since version 1.0 on my m505 and Xircom Wi-Fi sled.) I switched back to VersaMail when I got my Treo 700p.

You can find the SnapperMail setup cheat sheet here (http://www.snappermail.com/support/isp.cfm#82). You're also going to need the Premier version if you want to do SSL. I don't recall if you need SSL to do a Gmail SMTP send or not. I know that you need to authenticate with the Gmail SMTP server, I just don't recall if you need SSL. I think you do.

I don't seem to be able to get gmail working through IBM JVM on my T3.

Alan, I'll stick with Xiino for online access though your remark on Snapper made me think.
I don't like when all my mail is pulled into Snapper but I do not like either I need to clean up the already read mail on Gmail (mainly notification mails from this site and BrightHand). Maybe I need to split of my notification mails to another gmail account and work from there ... but then again the way Gmail handles mail threads is something I hate giving up. It is soooo convenient ...

Think, think, think, ...

PS nice piece from JA, especially the parodies where brilliant :D

I'm going to be negative. Sorry. I did not enjoy the JA Report. I found the overuse of sound effects to be silly & distracting.

You need to be careful with sound effects in the podcast. They are a great way to keep folks from falling alseep and adding some spice to the show. Over due it and it really hurts. JA was one of the first people to send me an audio postcard for the 100 - 104 anniversary shows so I cut him some slack.

Yes, it was a bit excessive, but it's not like he has a professional studio and sound lab to produce his show in. I enjoyed it. He could have talked less about his Macintoch and more about Palm and his TX, and possibly his new Treo to come, but that's JA for you.

LOL. Hey guys.

I kinda felt that it would be excessive but it being my first podcast, I wanted to put everything into it. I don't plan on making any more podcasts so I wanted make it very different. I used iMovie to make it BTW. Thanks for the criticisms and complements. Always good to know where I could have done better. :) Also, I recorded that long ago because since them, a lot has changed. For example, I decided to get the new Sprint Razr V3m because its cheaper and smaller. I also love my TX and don't want to have to carry two devices that do the same thing. So yes, I am staying with Palm OS but no Treo. I also got another Apple laptop. Its an AiBook (Aluminum Powerbook G4) with 1GHz processor...

Where was the podcast list you promised for show#100?

e.g. -

- Why run down only you US focused dataplan issues for Treos? Just focus on the device not on the contracts you have the choices to

Actually, the JAreport's sound effects does more to "cover up the speech" then annoy. If you turn down the volume of the sound effects and louden your voice, it would be much better :)

I really love your take on the Mac. Real plug and play for printers are really something that scares first time Mac users: It not only supports printing, but also shows you the specific settings for your printer model. Really makes you think: where did that came from?

If you think about the "computing experience", I think PalmOS introduced us to an "intuitive interface" when most people are expecting the "Microsoft complexity" to be the norm. Then we find out that MacOS provides a similar intuitive interface as Palm on full sized computers, so we are more then happy to jump.

You got 2 Powerbooks? why don't you sell your original, and just get a MacBook? :D

---

About the Gmail app, I tried to download it for fun, but stopped in my tracks when I found out it was a Java app. I don't have JavaVM, don't want something like that to waste my memory, and using the HTML view of Gmail (instead of the crippled Gmail mobile) in NetFront, I get a similar experience as what I get in Firefox. That's the power of the great rendering of NetFront. I don't even need an email app.

******I want Jeff back****

I am working with Jeff to have him co-host a future show with me. Since he is busy pursuing other things, I'm working around his schedule. I'm hoping to have him on show 104, however due to scheduling conflicts it might be an even later show.

Where was the podcast list you promised for show#100?

I ran out of time for the podcast list, so as you'll recall from show 100 I said I'd do the list in show 101, which I did.

Why run down only you US focused dataplan issues for Treos? Just focus on the device not on the contracts you have the choices to...
A hail to REST OF THE WORLD...me as a European have to shout

I'm here in the United States, and I can't read or German. (If you listen to 101 you'll hear me state that.) You might want to consider listening to the PUGcast - Sync Your Ears (http://www.pug-ned.de/podcast.php). It is a German language Palm podcast. While I've never listened to the entire show, I did help one of the people who work on that show (Clemens, whom I also mentioned in show 101) lay the ground work for the show by answering all sorts of questions that lead up to the first show.

If you would like to see more coverage of things like data plans and the like outside of the US, why not send in an audio postcard to 1srcpodcast@gmail.com and I'll play it on a future show?

About the Gmail app, I tried to download it for fun, but stopped in my tracks when I found out it was a Java app.

Ya, me too. I wasn't really excited about Gmail Mobile being a Java app. The only reason why I finished installing it was because I already had the JVM installed because I was messing around with Opera Mini 2.x. While I'm sure some flip phone users might like it simply because they have no other means for getting email on their phone.

As for me, I'm going to be sticking with VersaMail or SnapperMail to get at my Gmail account.

Alan:

I tried to download the gmail app using OTA on my TX. I got the message that it would not work on my TX and was referred to web based gmail which I am already using.

Pretty sophisticated for the OTA function to sense my TX and refuse to download it!

I did manage to access Gmail mobile (web version) from my TH55 from Taiwan. I am not sure why you can't but my Gmail default language settings are set to English(US). But anyways, if the HTML version of Gmail works fine in your browser, then you won't like the crippled view of the mobile version.

With the Gmail mobile java app, as I said, I didn't try it. But I could still manage to see the download link from Taiwan.

JA, you don't need to use sesquipedalian words or speak grandiloquently to make a good podcast. Just have a good, logical opinion, and that will work great.

Thanks for the advice. :)

As for getting another Powerbook...

The reason I didn't get a MacBook is because I wanted a Powerbook. Also, currently, I have very little money due to the purchase of both. Hope to get some back when I sell my older one. I am kind of pissed off becuase I thought all Powerbooks had the backlight feature. :( I got the version right before they started to implement them. I can update to a backlight keyboard but not feeling like opening my laptop.

As for focusing mostly on Mac OS, the reason I did that is because I just got my laptop like some days before recording that podcast. I also recorded it on my Mac so... lol. I also didn't have much to say about my TX. One thing you guys should know which I didn't say in my podcast is that it is because of Mac OS that I decided to actually start using my PIMs. Like I never liked Outlook before but from using iCal and MissingSync, I started to realize that I should really use my TX for organization. Then I started to sync with my Outlook because MissingSync cost too much. I also don't need to sync to two computers. Once thing that is for sure is that I am going to keep using Mac OS X and beyond. I just love it :).

It is very easy to upgrade/replace the keyboard on a PowerBook. No screws need to removed to replace the keyboard.

That's true for the TiBook but the AiBook has like two small screws that need to be removed to replace the keyboard in order to remove the frame around it. Then the keyboard can be removed. Don't have a Torx screwdriver on me. Probably will consider it later.

Alan,

I'm surprised you don't mention ChatterEmail when talking about email clients.
Chatter is a step above the other clients.

Also you had talked about security is case of losing your treo.....thought you might want to know.....a new feature being tested in the beta version of Chatter right now is a total lock-down where all messages are stored encrypted and a password is required to re-enter the email client (with various convenience settings). The kinks are being worked out but this speaks to the type of concerns you mentioned.

Yeah Chatter is THE BEST email client for Palm OS. I wish Marc would port it over to Windows Mobile. Chatter is the most used application on my Treo 700p, it's realy push-email, just like BlackBerries.

Alan G
11-06-2006, 01:28 PM
Push e-mail can be very seductive. One of these days I'll have to get around to doing a ChatterMail evaluation.

Alan G

frankp
11-06-2006, 01:39 PM
My two cents....while the push email feature is great.....I personally believe the true differentiator for Chatter--more than IMAP push--is its multi-threaded operation. (the tons of features don't hurt either). You are never "locking up" your phone with a dialog box checking or sending email. For the slight battery gain reasons, I usually don't leave the mailboxes "online" for the real push....setting the mailboxes for polling every few minutes works fine for me. The tons of features, many one-key commands, notification options make Chatter can set the Treo apart from even Blackberry's.

Jimmie Geddes
11-06-2006, 08:40 PM
Chatter is a double edged sword, lol. At times I'm glad that my 700wx doesn't have it, so I don't feel pressure by the blinking LED of Chatter and feeling always connected:) Alan once you go Chatter you don't go back, lol. Be careful. Chatter is probably the best application for Palm OS in my opinion.
