Just received my clie nx-70v. What are the first things you suggest I do?
I know I only want to export part of my datebook to the clie - haven't figured out how to do that. But all of my old programs are, well, old (moving from a Palm IIIx). What next? Screen protector, new launcher, installing mp3, movies etc? the possibilities are making my head spin!

I would get a screen protector and a case for your investment. A screen protector will keep your screen from getting scratched. I have a screen protector and that gives me the freedom to touch the screen with my fingers w/out worrying about getting my oils on the screen. It also allows me to wipe the screen with any rag I find without worry of scratching it.
There are many cases out there, there is a long thread about cases...about 6 pages, I suggest you read it, it will help you decide which case to get.
Good luck and welcome to the club ;)

1) Charge it ;)
2) Screen protector / Case
3) DO you have a MS? You need one to take FULL advantage of this beaut... (audio, pix, movs, etc.)
4) There are a few updates for the NX, Install the ones you see a NEED for
-NX70 Updates- (http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/clie/nx70v/softupdates/)
CUSTOMIZE it:
I recommend
a) zlauncher (http://www.zztechs.com/en/news.php4) as a launcher (you can customize it to MANAGE and organize your device -you may be happy with the built-in one UNTIL you really begin to install software,
b) Khroma to customize the colors of your clie
c) THE CLIE Viewer is tolerable UNTIL you begin taking pix... I use AcidImage (http://www.red-mercury.com/index.html) others prefer photosplash... but AI is well integrated with Zlauncher & the CF driver :D
d) THE LATEST CFDriver (http://www.eruwarestore.com/) MOST of us were clamoring for a LONG time about this expansion slot and THE DAY is here.
I enjoy Isilo (http://isilo.com) for DOC/HTML reading....
ENJOY!!!

1. OK, screen protector - check
2. Case - got a temp case until I decide either
3. we're half-way through its (are clies he or she) first charge
4. MS - bought and ready to go
5. updates! Ah, gotta get those
6. Await my CF driver registration code
dee dee dee dee (sound of Jeopary music...)
7. In the meantime, I will get Zlauncher and acidImage going. YiShow sounded so good but I've read its not working well with the CF driver...
Thanks infty and jmg_NX21, time to get to work. I mean play. I mean...

I agree with all jmg said with the exception of 2 things. First read these threads to find out the uses of the built in Clie Launcher...you just may decide to keep it. It is very flexible and you already have it :)

There are a lot of useful tips on tweaking the built in launcher to do exactly what you want, right down to some great skins:

The second thing is an alternative to Khroma is Colorize. I have used both, and like Colorize better.

anniebluesky thanks for some alternatives. Its like I've been driving a VWbug then discovering there's this thing called heat and AC. I don't understand this skin stuff, but will learn as I have time. Thanks,

LOL, I do drive a VWbug!!! And the heat and AC works great;) But, I guess with a name like anniebluesky, what else would I drive?
It takes a bit to figure out exactly what you want. I tried several launchers, but came back to the built in. It just works for me and does what I want.
BTW, don't you just love your new Clie? Each day, I marvel at the fact that I have it. I came from a Palm IIIc and I'm like a kid in a candy store.
And, if you can swing it, get a memory stick...the biggest you can afford. I love it for picture taking and MP3's. (both memory hogs.) I bought a lexar 128MB. Check around...there are good deals out there.

I finally understand what the problem with NetFront is. It is SOOO SLOW!! Freezes a LOT and I had to reconnect every 20 minutes.

Annie, very good, LOL!
The PTL errors and all that scrolling around and shifting magnifications, drove me nuts, amongst other things... I have simple needs, so using some of the other browsers to read the news, weather, and Cliesource were a lot easier to use. Any serious, heavy duty browsing, can be done from a plethora of PC's.

Yipes! I meant something like the '62 bug. yes, technically there was heat, after running the car for an hour. I'm still trying to import movies correctly but so far so good with missingsync and iphoto and itunes. Now to get the serious software like Docs to Go (or the best equivalent) in there.

Well...my bug is new.
To import and export, use the MS Import that is on your Clie. It creates a new temporary drive (much like a floppy or another CD drive.) Then you treat it much like any other folder...just drag-drop, copy-move, etc. Very very easy. But, and this is an important but, you must have a MS card in order for this to work. And any pictures you take before you get a MS is pretty much stuck on your Clie. (I think before I got my card, I used a little work around by emailing them to myself, then storing them on my 'puter, but that was a small pain.) The MP3 player, if I remember right, didn't work at all without the MS.
Docs to Go is, IMHO, the best program of it's kind. And best of all, it is free with your Clie. Install it from your CD that came with the Clie.
As far as other programs to install, try a search for favorite programs on this site. There have been many discussions along those lines. I found a couple that I didn't know about and started using...just from different threads here. I believe I added my humble list somewhere on a thread of that nature.
PS/ Larry, sometimes I can be witty:D

Y'all forgot the most important first step:
1. Do the "I have a Clie NX70V" Happy Dance!
It gets easy after that!

It gets easy after that! But you have to make a video clip with your NX and then post it here for everyone's amusement.

Something else that you might want to consider is purchasing another stylus. Personally, I feel that the styli that come with PDA's are too thin. It gets awkward for me to use such a small and thin writing tool.
I purchased a PhD multi, by papermate, it's a pen, pencil and stylus. It's nice and thick which makes writing on the clie easier.
This is just an opinion, but it's something you might want to think about....if you plan to use your clie a lot, you want to be comfortable using it.

Might I suggest (along with the excellent recommendations above), that you invest in RepliGo. Very very very nice program if you plan on reading documents on your Clie.
There are a lot of good suggestions listed above and everyone, for whatever reason, has their favorites. I suggest you try them all on the trial periods before you spend your money.

bright_day : You have a MS, so by all means, learn how to do full backups to MS using the included MSBackup utility. You will no doubt see messages pushing other backup programs, and there are definatly some great ones out there, but MS Backup comes free with your NX, and it works and works well. Learning how to effectivly do full system backups and restores will save your butt some day, trust me!
Also, if you are new to the NX series, by all means, spend time on this forum. There is a HUGE wealth of information. Also, (and here comes the shameless plug) check out my jimstips.com site. I put up a number of tips that you might find useful.
