View Full Version : HELP! USB port stopped working!

Hopefully someone can help me out here...
I was transferring files from my laptop to my Clie using MS Import, and I clicked "Disconnect" on the Clie before stopping the device on my laptop first.
Now, I do this all the time, and I've always ignored the warning that said, "ejecting a device before stopping it may cause it to work improperly...." - mainly because I never had a problem.
Well, for some reason now, my USB port won't recognize the cradle/cable anymore on my Clie. Clicking on "Connect" in MSImport says to check device connection. Pressing the HotSync button results in NOTHING!
Is there anyway I can fix this?! I'm running Windows ME on the laptop.
Thanks for any help.

I know this may sound silly but, did you try and unplug the device, boot down, and when your system boots back up, go ahead and plug the usb back in.
On an off note, sometimes when putting my Clie (NX60) when hotsyncing, I need to "play" with the inserting of the Clie in the cradle. Try that first before going crazy. This has been a normal thing to me since this is my second clie, both devices different, but the cradle sometimes needs to be "wiggled" a little with the device. I hope that helps!:)
Yeah - I tried all the usual stuff - unplugging, plugging it back in, adjusting the Clie on the cradle, rebooting, etc....I know it has something to do with the fact that I got a Blue Screen of Death when I clicked "Disconnect" on the Clie - Windows ME informed me that doing that before stopping the device would cause problems. I clicked OK - and Whammo - computer crashed.
Rebooted and have had problems ever since....I'm thinking I need to do something with "regedit" but can't quite figure out exactly what to do....

reinstall the clie desktop and see if it reinstalls the drivers correctly. Windows ME and above has you do that because it keeps a set of dynamic drivers running for devices like this. You stop them so it can unload them correctly, if you force the removal you could end up with some corruption.
I believe Windows 95 and 98 would keep the drivers running sucking away more of your precious memory. This is why on ME and above you usually see found new hardware -> Sony Handheld (or Sony Mass Storage) everytime you use MSImport or hotsync.
At least my Windows XP and 2000 (to some extent) acts like this.

Ditto on that.
Before reinstalling the Clie Desktop I need to Remove it first, right? Using Add/Programs? Is there anything else I have to remove before reinstalling?
Thanks again for you help - I knew someone in here would know the answer!

With my NR and Win ME, I always used disconnect from the Clie. The NR and NX are the same when it comes to MS Import and HotSync as my NX.
Don't overlook that something could have happened to the Clie. It's not common, but it's possible, as some others can attest too. Hopefully for you it isn't.

Well before uninstalling anything. Backup your databases (contacts and such) first. THEN you can overwrite the existing clie desktop. You do not need to uninstall the Clie desktop. Good luck!
....but because I can't HotSync, you mean that I should use MS Backup, right? Anything else I should backup?

Well from my past experience, I have never backed up via MS. But from what I hear thats the way to go. But the way I backed up my contact info and settings is go to the computer that I last known hotsynced and do a hotsync once I know everything works. But do the backup of your contacts...I cannot say that enough. I just got lucky in my case because I have 3 computers where I can hotsync. The way to back up was to save my contacts via desktop, do the export/import function on each, memo, to dos, address book(remember to highlight all the contacts here before importing to a saved file), and calender.
Good luck my friend!
I found the way to fix it!
Here's the trick - pull out your hair trying to get it to work before you have to leave for work. Then, go to work and obssess about it all day - worrying about how you're going to have go into "regedit", how you have to learn how usb ports work, how you're going to have reinstall the Clie Desktop - oh, also, keep posting questions to this forum asking for help, trying to get as much information as you can before you go home.
Then, once you're home, ready to tackle anything it throws at you, turn on the computer, wait for it to boot up, then here's the trick: put the Clie in the cradle and hit the HotSync button.
See - that's it - you didn't have to do a thing and it fixed itself!! :)
Thanks for all the help...

Have the same problem occasionally. Found that if I go to settings and click Control Panel, then add hardware and click on same that the CLIE will hotsync. Make sure the Clie is in the cradle and press hotsync before going to Control. Only happens on the PC at home.
