I have bought a used six months old Tungsten TX. A day after I discoverd that when playing music using pTunes, there was a constant hissing sound. This sound was so loud that in order to get rid of it I had to play music very loudly... And... it is not the headphones. I tried it with different ones, and also connected it to my stereo.

I have the receipt, and the shop where it was bought sent it to Palm for repeair. It was repaired due to guarantee.

I got it back yesterday. And the hissing sound is still there. Any TX owners that have had the same problem? Is it supposed to be like that?

Palm TX's do exhibit background hiss on music playback. The severity though depends on the sensitivity of the headphones you use. I use headphones (Sennheiser MX550) with a variable volume control in the lead. This means that I can adjust the sensitivity of the headphone and remove most of the background hiss.

Use headphones/earbuds with impedance >= 32 Ohm.

Does the hiss disappear using the headphones you suggest, Dick Tracy?

Does anyone know if there is any software fix?

I've used several different headphone/earphones with my TX and there is virtually no hiss - you have to turn down the sound and really listen carefully. The same is true for when I connect to my hi-fi at home or play my TX through my car stereo.

FYI, my best pair of earphones has an impedance of 16 Ohm.

I'd say that you TX is faulty

I suspect it is faulty as well - even though I just received it back from repair... The hiss is so loud that it really distorts the listening experience.

By the way, I have tested it with two different iPod headphones (those that comes with 1st generation iPod Shuffle).

Does anybody know if the hiss can be removed via some sort of software just like the whining of the screen at different clock speed?

thx

I got an in-line attenuator to fix this problem.
Basically, turning the volume down on the attenuator and volume set at medium on the TX i cant notice hiss through a pair of decent sennheiser's.
I got it from ebay and it works fine.
BUT - I agree with Ou-Boet - I'd say its faulty.

Most TX have this issue. It is well documented. The solution, as others posted above, is to use a pair of headphones that have inline volume control (my cheap Panasonic's completely cancel the noise) or use the higher quality of headphones, as DT suggested. The reason that Palm didn't repair the issue is because it is the nature of the TX.

I just checked mine out. No hiss and great sound using TCPMP and Sony MDR-D42 headphones. Sounds way way clearer then my 30Gig Ipod Video.

I talked with the company the TX was bought from yesterday. They apologized saying that Palm must have done a lousy job repairing it... He asked me to return it again...

I have no sound or hiss problems, nor the screen whine. I would ask Palm to replace your unit.

I got the TX back from its second repair... and the noise and hiss are still there. I immediately called the shop where it is bought. He asked me to return it, and he will send a brand new unit.

So... I hope there will be no hissing noise from the new unit.

ps.
seems like I have two identities... I am tomklaus as well :-)

I got the new Palm TX three days ago. Still the same annoying hiss. I am tired of this now, and am convinced as some of you say that it is a TX issue. However, it seems like there are TX´es without that problem. So... I sold the TX yesterday, and I am back to my old T3.

Thanks for you help, guys.

Warpspeed will fix or at least silent the hiss little bit. Check my thread "Medicines for palm os device bug's" -for build-in technical problems. There are simply listed problems that don't depend on 3th party software. The thread doesn't have large content but I will develope it more and more as I find more build-in bugs.
