I have an old iMac G4, 800mHZ, 60GB HD, 256MB RAM, and running Mac OS 10.4 Tiger. And, as the thread title suggests, it keeps crashing with a Kernel Panic (http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/thumb/9/9d/300px-MacOSX_kernel_panic.png). It usualy happens when playing a game, burning a DVD, working in iDVD, etc. The weird thing is... I used to be able to do this....
Will adding some extra RAM fix this?
Do a Repair Permissions. Then if the crashing continues, try resetting the PRAM (reboot but hold down the Command+Option+P+R keys). Once you hear the second beep, let go of the keys.
If that persists, add more RAM. Also uninstall apps that you no longer need (use AppZapper). :) Good luck.

Repaired Permissions, and it fixed a lot of them (it said they were wrong). Now let's see if it works... ;)
BTW, why was this thread moved to OT: PCs/Laptops? I thought Mac/Linux was about Macs... lol... (or... Mac/Linux Palm related... things?).
Anyway, I made a new iDVD project and messed around, and it didn't crash. :D :D :D
I am going to burn a DVD (with an external burner, because Superdrive isn't working with these newer DVDs....)
DVD burn was successful! Now let's see how Garageband holds up ;)

GarageBand is such a great app. I bought the World Music, Symphony Orchestra, and Remix Tools Jam Packs to use with it. And also a pack form Advanced Media Group for extra celtic instruments and shite. :)
I felt odd about spending over $400 on an app that was free, until I found out that they also work in Logic Express and Logic Pro, so at least I have options.
Glad all is working again. UPGRADE YOUR RAM!!! :D 256 will choke any modern comp.

$400 on music clips? *cough*RIP OFF!!!!*cough*. I don't have any money for RAM.... (nor a mouse, the mouse stopped working too.... dang)
- Mac/Linux is all about Palm AND the Mac and/or Linux
- $400 is not a rip off if you're serious with what you're doing. It's like if you're deciding if you're going to buy more memory or not. :D
My current Mac is working great but my long term project is getting a new 7200rpm hard drive and adding more memory.

No Rip off, just the Orchestra is about 9Gigs of sound fonts from what I recall and they sound great. They support the bendy bar thingy, attack, release and all sorts of midi-magic. Apple's Jam Packs are relativiely inexpensive for what you get. The difference in quality between their product and AMGs pack is night and day. :)
They were worth every penny. And I did use them for a job, so they were all a write off. :p
Listen to the intro, the video game monkey music. I made it in GB; :o

It is crashing again... not kernel panic that much, but just freezing. I believe it needs more RAM. I am having trouble finding some, however. I only need 256MB-512MB. I bought a 1GB chip for $80, so I was hoping that since it is 1/4, 1/2 the size, that this would also effect the price. However, the modules I have found are $60-$70. Anyone know a place I can get a great deal, or does someone here have any they would sell for around $40?

Can't help with the RAM, but seeing you mentioned garageband, my favourite site is iCompositions at http://www.icompositions.com/
Register and you'll be able to access a nice collection of loops
There is some GREAT music available from some VERY talented people.

GarageBand was to test it ;)
I found a good deal on RAM on eBay, so I might be good.

Upgraded it to 512MB... still crashes...
Here is another thing: If I restart right after a crash, it will crash again, but if I wait, it will start up fine. What could that mean?
I've reset the PRAM, added more RAM, fixed permissions, verified the HDD, what else is there? Maybe test the internal RAM?
