View Full Version : Tungsten T3 is coming apart, what to do ?

My Tungsten T3 is starting to come apart. Screws have fallen apart, etc.

If there was a Palm Os licensee that was making some new Palms, then I would look to get a next level Palm OS PDA. I am not interested in a combo cell phone PDA.

Could you please help me with some choices:

In looking at the T/X, it appears that it has less memory and a slower CPU than the T5 and the T3. Also, other functions like voice messages, quiet alarm or even lights to tell you that something is running is absent.
I have heard that the speed makes for a delay in the graffetti language. The slowee down CPU and battery that is a little more powerful than the T3 would allow for more battery life.
I really thought the LifeDrive was a very good idea. But, I was waiting for version 2. Looks like there never will be a version 2 nor any enhancements for it as well.
Back to the T/X. and T5 and T3, apparently the no-firmware upgrade commitment is solid. For example, the only bluetooth version offered is an old one thartr will limits the distance and reliability of them.
I was wondering if I should just try to find some screws, and fix what I have. I just don't know.
It seems like if people get the T/X as their first Palm or an upgrade from the III series, that they are thrilled. It also appears that people who have had the T3 or T5 who buy the T/X are disapointed with the removal of some core features and the slower CPU.

Please let me know what you think.

I really was hoping that a company like LG, which is a licensee of Palm OS was going to run with the OS and do something creative, but that hasn't happen.

What WOULD be great would be if Palm's CEO I(Mr Stock option), and Access or not going to do anything with the Palm PDAs, I would love for them to just sstop all support and let it go to open source and let all lthose creative people out there at it.

Jon

Thanks,

jon

You should try to fix it if it's possible or find the another T|T3
Upgrade to T|T5 . TX , LD is not good - idea ( just my opinion because I tired with NVFS devices )

Bexuanmai,

I think I am with you Bexuanmai.

The biggest issue is getting replacement screws.

I also have seen a pretty inexpensive battery replacement that is more powerful than the one that the T/3 comes with, with would be nice. The fact that Palm didn't include a battery in the T/3 to keep up with its functionality is the biggest negative. Have you ever changed a battery ?

I was looking at the T/X and T5 and it is hard for me to believe that they are "upgrades".

I wonder if I can take some of the loose screws that keep falling ouit of my brain to use for the T3? :D

I really am not a whiner, but I do believe in being a good consumer and letting companies know when they are doing a good job or not. O much prefer the positive correspondance.

But, I will bring up another of what has looked like an almost intentional sabatoge of one of the most loyal groups of electronics/computers users, the Palm users. Ever since the issues with the spilt occured.

This is about the screws on the T3, which are known to fall out. I would normally look at as a minor design problem , figuring, replacement screws would be available as well probably a design of a better screw etc.
Instead Palm doesn't carry replacement screws for the T3.

I believe there is someone who has posted on this forum who sells them for a minimal fee. They are especially important if someone is going to open up their T3 to install a replacement third party battery.

I keep hoping for Access to do something great with their Palm OS and Linux
OS and LG going after it as a licensee.

I use my T3 as a mini-notebook PC as well as a portable audio player and load a lot of music on it, in OGG format.
I also use the voice memo system quite a bit to quick memos when writing isn't appropriate.

Here is another dream. Access comes out with their new Palm OS/Linus OS. Because of the Linus backbone, it would really open up loads of possibilities.
What would occur after that would be the availability of the creation of PDA cases that we can choose from. Have some of the vendors lile Antec who make PC cases can make different styles of cases and we can pick what suits us.
Then is the availability of very reliable, high speed micro drives from several vendors. For example, the company that I think makes the best portable media players, Cowan from South Korea, has recently made a supurb, very small, portable media player, the IAudio6, that has a unique 4gb, mico-drive that is all of 0.85 of one inch".
See IAUDIO 6 specs (http://www.cowonamerica.com/products/iaudio/6/).
So if we choose tom we can pick something like that, maybe it can be bundled in with a case. what software we want to use. Depending on is we are looking to use our PDA for scheduling and communications, some business and some as a portable media player, etc.

You get the picture.

My screws were falling out about 4 months ago, I just called up Palm and they sent replacement parts with no questions asked!

I can sell you 4 replacement screws and a new 1100mAh battery. It's the same one I had for my old T3 before I sold it, and it was just never used because I sold it. It is the highest capacity you can find for the T3 (which I don't understand because it's still small and a bigger battery could be made), and it's still in the packaging. Would you like to buy it? I've sold over 40 PDA's on eBay and via forums so if you really need something for that, I can provide proof of my goodness. :D

Loose screws can be held a bit better using Loctite or Liquid Threadlock.
Both are glues which you put on the screws to prevent them working loose.

I agree.

On the battery, I would want to find one that is more powerful than the Palm OEM battery that came with it.

Can you make any recommendations for a reliable source on the T/3 battery ??

Your suggestion for glue is a great idea.

Until I get my new screws, I have used the quick fix for about anything, I put some Duct Tape on the sides of my T3. The clear Duct tape.

Just as a memory. Do people remember the advice after "9/11" that Americans should seal all of their windows and doors with Duct Tape ? That was so when Iraq was going to use their "Weapons of Mass Destruction" on us, the Duct tape would protect us from the "lethal" chemical bombs that were going to attack the U.S. Just a memory, when I think of Duct Tape,.

I also lost some screws of my T3. It was no problem to get suitable screws at the next optician around the corner. For free. They also offered a set of golden screws. :-)

... unfortunately some times later I lost the entire T3. :-(

I have found someone, Chris Short, who repairs Palms and is extremely
proficient, inexpensive, and quick. I'll use my experience as an
example: I needed a new battery installed in my Palm T-3, his quote:
"The total will be $45 - this includes a new high capacity
battery(1180 mAh instead of the OEM 900 mAh), service and return
shipping within the US. The repair will be done within five days of
receiving the unit, usually less, then sent out via USPS Mail with
Delivery Confirmation."
The repair was done perfectly and I had my T-3 back in my hands 6 days
(which included a weekend) after I left it at the Post Office. He has
a site on EBay where he sells/auctions a broken palm evaluation and
some used Palms that he has accumulated. His rating is 100% with over
2600 responses. Not one negative response. That URL is

temZ9738341253QQcategoryZ38331QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I preferred to deal directly with him at: ips@...
The units he will work on: His Quote; "All Palm/Handspring and most
Sony branded units plus some other units but the other units I prefer
to do on a case by case basis - I like to specialize on a model so
they can be economically and quickly repaired. There are so many
other brands with such limited quantity that the likelihood of running
across another one with the same problem is rare therefore that extra
time needed to repair the unit is many times wasted. The less new
"learning" that is needed for a unit means the less chance for
mistakes or not understanding of the problem."
I know you will find him to your liking. I rarely blow someone else's
horn, but I am impressed.
