View Full Version : New TH55 User: Need answer to the following questions
I Like My UX50!

Hi,
I got the TH55 today (It was either this or Lifedrive)! I skimed the answer for this, but it wasn't definite to me so... I have the following questions:
Currently, I have the UX50 hotsynced to the desktop, & was wondering, if I can use the same CPU to hotsync TH55? Should I install the TH55 clie disc, even though I have one for UX50? And can I use the same user name, or change it? I am asking because I have several programs like DTG 8, ZLauncher, & many games that requires the User ID I have been using & I don't want to buy it again--it's annoying, but kinda unerstandable.
So, is the apps & games from UX50 to TH55 compatible?
And is KB100 compatible with the US TH55, or just Euro model with BT?
Any advice would be much appreciated :)
Thanks in advance.
Recharging the battery now. If it's not upto original spec, it's going to DanT for a new one :D

The '55 desktop should work with both units. There shouldn't be compatiblity issues with your apps, although you may have use the same hotsync name as your UX. I'm not sure about the keyboards. I use the Belkin G700 keyboard with my '55.

Tks. I guess I will give it a go--will use TH55 software for both. About Belkin G700 keyboard, I heard about that. And it's cheap to boot. But I need the correct drivers right?
Also, TH55 has DTG 6, but I have to register & all that w/ Sony. So, I don't think I will be able to use DTG 6. But if I use DTG 8. Would I have a problem using some default Clie programs? I think Clie mail is affected, but not sure about others.

Technically, yes. However, be aware that some of the software you're using is licensed for a specific device. Most vendors will allow you to transfer the license to a new device. But, no, you are not allowed to have two devices with the same software.
This seems silly, of course, since both devices are owned by you and it's unlikely that you'll be using them both at the same time. However, if a vendor says that you are not allowed to do this, then the right thing to do would be to respect them.
That said, there are some programs that are not tied to your hotsync ID, but to the physical device. For this, you will need to buy another copy if you want to use it on both devices.
As for compatibility, most UX programs will work on the TH. I suppose there are a few small number that won't work. More likely, TH programs might not work on the UX due to it's screen orientation.
I'm not familliar with the keyboard, but if it works via IR or the hotsync port (i.e., not BT), then I can see no reason why not.
I am a TH55 user and think it's the best PDA I've owned, save for twos thing: support for this has been dropped (hard, in some cases) by software vendors; and Sony has kept APIs a secret, so it's very hard to find programs that work with the voice recorder, camera, or a few other features. Basically, Clie devices (and, for some reason, the TH) are the "red haired stepchildren" of the PalmOS world.
Lastly, be careful about trying to sync the same software to 2 devices. They are not the same and will contain different files. It'd be better to create 2 different HotSync names, save for the problem of having to work with software vendors to allow you to put the software on 2 devices. DO NOT EVER THINK OF TRYING TO DO A RESTORE FROM BACKUP. I think you're playing with fire if you try to use the same Hotsync ID in an attempt to replicate.

Belkin G700 driver: Igor Nestrov (of YAHM fame) has an excellent OS5 G700 driver at: g700.palmoid.com

Concerning the KB100 keyboard, that is what I use with my TH55.
