Great! That means they'll probably release the 700p firmware update in January 2008! :(

After upgrading I found that Shadowmites BT Bial-Up networking hack no longer works. as a matter of fact you will need to manually delete the BTManager.prc file from your Treo 650 if you want Bluetooth to work. Hopefully Shadowmite will update his patch again to re-enable this.

Be advised there is at least 1 member at BrightHand who almost bricked his device when applying this upgrade on his Verizon phone. Fortunately he was able to recover by reverting back to 1.04.

So do not throw away the old upgrade version yet ;)

I started an upgrade from 1.03 to this newest version. All went well until I got an error message in the midst of the ROM update. I spent the next 3.5 hours following the directions to deal with the error. The update kept failing during the 911 update, and then going to a loop. I spent 1.5 hours with Palm tech support, with no success. I still have 1.03, but if I restore my former applications the 650 loops. After a hard reset, I get a clean dial pad with the phone application off. When I try to turn the radio on, the 650 resets!

Finally, the next day I talked to a new tech guy. He said I had a "hardware" failure and that I could send my 650 in for repair for $190. I chose to buy a refurbished 650 for less than the cost of repairing my two year old 650 on eBay instead. What a waste. Be carefull.

Obviously that rep guy was a complete noob.

There is a member at BrightHand who did EXACTLY the same as you: upgrade from 1.03 to 1.05. CRASH ! At the EXACT same place as you: 911 update.
Coincidence ? I think not.

He was able to revert back to 1.04 (he had to package still around but never installed it ) and THEN go to 1.05. If I were you I would try to get the phone and money back. There are other ways to spend it (you can send it to me, for example :D )

We were able to successfully update from 1.04 to 1.05a, no thanks to Palm's support documentation, which has been a continuing disappointment.

During the upgrade process, we encountered the familiar reboot loop.

As far as we can tell, the phone wants to be hard-reset first for the upgrade to have the greatest chance of success. The hard-reset wipes out all your data, so of course you need to do a full HotSync backup first. Then start the upgrade.

But now there's another pitfall: The upgrade software asks you first to HotSync, and sees that there's no profile on the reset phone. However, the PC has your old profile from the backup, and HotSync shows this as an available selection. Naturally you're inclined choose that one to sync. WRONG!

When you do that, some of the crap which kept you from successfully upgrading in the first place gets reinstalled, and you're back where you started.

The answer is to create a NEW PROFILE, call it "tempuser". HotSync that, and go through the whole process.

Now, the Upgrade software running on the PC tells you to wait for the DialPad to appear before touching anything, and then to HotSync. Well, the DialPad screen never did come up - the App list screen did. So we loaded DialPad and checked Options/Phone Info. Voila, Software: Treo650-1.05a-VZW.

NOW: Do a HotSync and restore your old profile instead of "tempuser". Even this may not go right the first time - ours didn't: HotSync didn't give the choice of profiles to restore!

After this failure, we rightclicked HotSync in the System Tray, chose Custom..., and made sure that our old profile was the one selected, and hit Done. Now HotSyncing gave us the choice of profiles, and we restored our old one.

It's possible that we needed to perform yet another HotSync after this to get everything, I think we did, but it all came back (some things like IBM WebSphere Java platform will have to have the appropriate .prc files reinstalled manually).

Finally we *228 and reprogrammed the phone over the air. Phew! Is this hinky engineering or what?

It seems this is pretty common. Any help in getting 1.04 as a last resort. The local verizon store said full retail.

I've had similar trouble trying to update from 1.04 to 1.05a.

Mine always crashes and says "unable to update ROM."

Any advice?
