I just downloaded the 1.05 version of the Treo 650 updater. I was lured in by the promise it would fix problems with bluetooth car kits. It went into a reset loop during the "e911 updater" and I never got my phone back. hard reset. zero out reset. alternate user method. All failed. The bad part is I cannot make a phone call even from a freshly hard reset unit. My replacement phone arrives Thursday.

Only do this update if you are experiencing some problem the update promises to fix AND your smartphone is under warranty or insured.

I successfully upgraded to 1.05a tonight. I was careful to disable any background apps, but I still ran into a little snag. Immediately after the e911 updater finished, the installer tried running something that I had moved to the SD card via PowerRun. Since the instructions say to remove the SD card, the app couldn't run.

Following Palm's troubleshooting advice, I performed another hotsync, which hard reset the Treo and tried again. That time it worked. There were two major nuisances after coming up with my new 1.05a Treo. First, my saved preferences were gone. Anyone who's been through that knows what a pain it is. Second, all apps managed by PowerRun no longer had their stub file in RAM. I had to manually move the files to RAM and delete the old PowerRun directory on the SD card with a file manager. At that point, I could use PowerRun to move it back.

All-in-all it took about two hours to complete, but in the end I'm happy with it. The main things I hoped to gain from this were 1) Improved memory management and 2) fewer involuntary resets. It will take a few days to determine if this has been achieved. In the meantime, the Treo seems noticeably faster.

While I'm glad I did the update, I guess I'd have to echo r0k's advice about being under warranty. At least if you're running 1.04 without major problems.
