Google Maps works with TX via WiFi! Very fast but 320x320 :(
Alan, 680 = SD card slot ; 750v = miniSD. They look similar but they really are different.
680 battery = 1200mAh compared to 1800mAh = Treo 650/700.

Yes, the 680 has a normal SD card slot. It is just covered with a door cover on the side (versus top on 650)

LOL... Ziplocked Treo's in the kitchen... LOL
I also can't put my Treo down even when I'm in the kitchen. Most of the time it's a mixed drink recipe, but that's another story.

Great podcast!! You needed to include the Ricotta cake recipe in the episode description, I added it in the description on gotg:)
I'm a fellow Italian and love Ricotta in anything. I'm going to have to try the cake and take a few extra shots of insulin, lol. Great podcast!

Thank you for setting the record straight on this issue. So, just change 'Treo 680' to 'Treo750v' and we're good.

So Alan, how's 100 coming along? Is it going to be great? Have you been provided with lots of "guest appearences?"

You'd be amazed to learn how few people took me up on the offer to send in audio reflections. I thought it was going to a big hit. At any rate, I'll cook up something good for show 100.

Have you all relistened to the first podcast? Its incredile because the podcast really started around the time Palm OS for Linux idea was starting, nearly 2 years ago. I love it :). Can't wait for next week to hear the 100th.

Alan:
thanks for acknowledging my need for a rant about the absence of new PDAs for 2006.
I have a question about EDGE on the Treo 680: is it as fast as EVDO?
I have a question about DXTG v9: are there updates for wordtogo and sheetogo? The Palminfocenter says yes, but comments here lead me to conclude no. Too bad if it is no.
thanks...

Alan GYour right... I am amazed. But on the other hand, coming up with something worth listening to could be challenging.

I have no idea. I'll see if I can't found out for next week's show.

Technically, I'd have to say yes. The word processor and spreadsheet applications, known as WordToGo and SheetsToGo have been updated. However, the previously used DataViz Docs To Go file formats are no longer supported and have been replaced by the normal/native Microsoft file formats. Back in the old days, there was no SD cards and documents had to be stored in RAM. The only way to do that was to convert the desktop files into Palm OS .pdb database files. We have come a long way since then, and support for the DataViz file formats have been dropped. At least that is my understanding of the situation.
Hope that helps.

True, but I think the items that have been sent in are good. I think that I'll spread the audio notes across shows 100 - 104.

EDGE is slower than EVDO, hence its called 2.75G compared to EVDO which is 3G. A comparative Data network with compares to EVDO that is GSM is 3GSM or UTMS. EDGE I believe is the same speed as CDMA's 1xRTT.
Look here for more info...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EVDO
Essentially, CDMA is in the lead when it comes to data network speed. GSM looks like it is always behind and will always be behind. The only way GSM will beat EVDO is if UTMS is skipped and HSDPA is focused more on.

Alan GHey, where is 'right' ?
Great show Alan ! I wasn't even aware about the pause if you hadn't told it.
Hope your dad got his cake ;)
I think 680 is going to go fast but I am still hesitating knowing data plans are so ridiculously expensive where I live. And lack of WiFi support is definitely a bummer in such situation :(
I am also wondering how people are going to react regarding 700p in the States if they have the possibility to choose for CDMA or GSM coverage ...

Opps! My mad. I guess I've had too many 'mixed drinks'! To recap, Diet Cokes on the left. Regular Cokes on the right. Dump out the Pepsi Jazz. :)

I'm not sure how this will play out. Palm, as far as I know, hasn't announced which carriers will be picking up the 680. The only GSM carriers in the US are Cingular and T-Mobile. The thrid and fourth carriers behind Verizon and Sprint. There has also been no word on whether or not there will be a CDMA version of the Treo 680 for VZW and Sprint. If the Treo 680 is going to be a global phone, then I think that VZW and Sprint won't be getting the 680 any time soon.
If that theory is correct, then you would end up with the Treo 700-series on VZW and Sprint, and the Treo 680 on Cingular and T-Mobile. The question I have is will customers switch carriers just to get the Treo they want? I made the switch because the Sprint plan I wanted was cheaper than the Version version.

It will depend how they will price it and the 680-offering carriers will have a substantial cost advantage over the 700-offering carriers !
Do you have phone number portability in US ? In Europe, when switching from providers, you have the possibility to keep your old number.
Alan G
10-21-2006, 06:02 PM
Yes, here in the US, the carriers where made to (read: forced to) support number porting. I didn't port my number from the Treo 600 because Jen purchased the plan for me as a gift and had her name as the primary account holder. That made things really interesting.

Spectec's micro SD wifi could be a hit if they could get it to work with the 680 as an imbedded chip in an SD adapter. That'd make the SD card slot used for WIFI, but if they could somehow make a 1GB micro sd card adapter, it'd be like having wifi for the 680. :D

I listen to the 'cast every week but I can't stand the whole diet coke opening. If you're not getting paid by them, I'd say to open it up before you hit the record button. It makes your otherwise great 'cast sound a bit unprofessional. But, hey, just my two cents...

here is what Walt Mossberg says:
Cellphones
One hardly knows where to begin when talking about cellphone jargon. But an obvious source of confusion is the baffling nomenclature being given to the various new high-speed cellphone networks that can transmit a wide assortment of material — music, video clips and web sites — to phones at speeds rivaling home broadband.
If you're shopping for a phone at Verizon or Sprint, the high-speed capability is called "EVDO" or "EV-DO" (which stands for Evolution Data Only or Evolution Data Optimized). At Cingular, it's known as "HSDPA" (for High-Speed Downlink Packet Access).
Since T-Mobile doesn't have a network in this speed class, salespeople there will brag instead about "EDGE" (Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution), which, despite its aspirational name, is a much slower technology.

Sorry to hear that the Diet Coke thing really bothers you. It's just part of "my thing". I am not getting paid or endorsed by the Coca-Cola Company. People who have met me in real life know that I can always been seen with a can, preferably a 20oz bottle, of Diet Coke in hand. It is a side effect of being a long time IT guy.
PS: If you want someone to blame, I'm going to pass the buck an tell you that I got the idea from the Wingin It (http://www.michaelandevo.com/) podcast with Michael and Evo. Those guys open and drink beer during their show. :)

No, it doesn't "really bother" me. I'm just giving what I believe to be constructive criticism.
By the way, I'd like to hear more talk about the TX.
Thanks for putting out the show!

By the way, I'd like to hear more talk about the TX.
The TX is a great device that is a solid performer without any serious bugs that I'm aware of. The down side to that is that it isn't making much news. When I do talk about software that works on both Treos and devices like the TX, I usually generalize it to something like:
"Docments to Go v9 requires Palm OS 5.0 and later so it will work on all the current Treos and Palm handhelds."
Or I might say something like:
"Docments to Go v9 requires Palm OS 5.0 and later so it will work on all the current Palm-branded devices."
Is there a specific application that works on the TX that you want to talk about?
Interestingly enough, the Palm TX is the only Tungsten-class handheld that I don't onw. I've got the original Tungsten T and I've built (assembled, really) a Tungsten T2 from Palm OEM replacement parts. I belong to the cult of the Tungsten T3. And when it was time to retire the T3, I picked up a Tungsten T5. Gee. I guess I should get a TX so I can have a complete set.
Thanks for putting out the show!
You're welcome!

I got this answer from Dataviz:
Yes, the new version of Documents To Go supports only Native Excel,
Word, PowerPoint, PDF and some graphic formats. While it may take
slightly longer to open certain files, this is a much more efficient way
to transfer files from one location to another. Also, with wireless
email and attachments becoming so much more popular, it is becoming more
important to have formatting maintained when sending files around. Our
InTact Technology will allow all original formatting to be maintained no
matter how the files are transferred, however this does require the
files to be in their native form.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Jason

Hmmm. Dataviz is...
1) assuming I don't mind taking more time to open any document accross the board (not true) and
2) assuming the purpose I edit every/any document is to exchange it with others (not true).
So how is this "much more efficient" for how I work?
