I'm hoping someone out there can help me. I've tried to connect my NX70V via WiFi to varius hotspots throughout Hong Kong, with no success.

I've tried 'cheating' and set my SSID to ANY so it can act as a sniffer - no success.

I've even registered with PCCW/Netvigator to use their Wireless "Skywalker" service. However, this has not worked while I'm at one of their hotspots e.g. Pacific Coffee.

PCCW tell me to talk to SONY, and guess what SONY want me to talk to PCCW!

Can anyone help? Has anyone got their WiFi working on something other than their home LAN?

What SSID did PCCW tell you to use?
Did they give you a WEP key?

The SSID is PCCW, there is no WEP

I'm a regular user with the netvigator's wireless service.
yes, most common hotspot known is Pacific Coffee.

In wireless Lan setting:
SSID : PCCW
WEP : none
Leave IP & DNS settings all to Auto

Try entering URL manually within Netfonts (or whatever browser you're using): wireless.netvigator.com

That should solve your problem, because I often find myself in the same situation, the WiFi just can't seem to detect any active connection. So what I always end up doing is entering the Netvigator's URL, then the login page loads up.

Oh, also it's just so funny about the PCCW/SONY tech support thing! :D

Yeah ... logging into PCCW's wireless hotspots from Pacific Coffee, Starbucks, etc is a breeze ... when I turn on Netfront 3.0 it just gos striaght to the "10 minute session" login page from Netvigator ... JUST remember to LOG OUT otherwise the thieving gits will charge you for an EXTRA 10 minutes ... (logs off automatically if inactive for 10 minutes). Don't just simply tur off the Palm and leave ...

BUT do any of you chaps have Netvigator Broadband (wireless) at HOME? Can you log into that? I haven't managed it yet ... I called PCCW and after about 5 days got through to some muppet that told me "you need the software ... and we don't do it for the Palm ... bye ... ". Customer service at it's BEST!

Cheers,

Nick

Hello HK residents.
I use Netvigator Broadband DSL at home with a Buffalo Router/Wireless Access Point. I can use my NZ90 with Sony Wireless CF card to connect to the Internet.

I have an Intel wireless gateway and it works perfectly with my NZ (though I must admit I deleted NetFront 'cuz it's unstable - I'm using Avantgo and PocketLink instead).

SOooooooo ... can you guys tell me how you've done it? WHat are the settings you've used? How are you "telling" Netvigator your user name and password?

Anything you can do to help a poor person in distress would be welcome!

Cheers,

Nick

Sorry, people ... to clarify ...

What SSID are you using ...

WEP on or off?

Infrastructure or AdHoc?

What are the other settings, like IP, DNS etc (Manual or Auto?) ...

MUCH appreciated.

Cheers,

Nick

What SSID are you using ...
use the SSID of your own wireless access point

WEP on or off?
depends on whether you have set WEP on or off on your wireless access point

Infrastructure or AdHoc?
use infrastructure

use DHCP (ip address assigned automatically by your access point)

nick, do you have an access point installed?

John.

Cheers ...

... I don't know if you are in HK or not but I have the standard 'package' that Netvigator supplied for people signing up for their 'wireless broadband' from home ...

Basically, the cable routes into an NEC Modem, which is plugged into an orinoco 'thingy' ... the access point ... this sends the signal to the receiver (Orinoco) that's sat on top of the computer and plugs via USB into the computer ...

Wireless HotSync is fine but I just can't get onto the 'net' ... I don't even think that I've found my access point's SSID ... I'm a bit lost here ...

I know I sound like a bit of a newbie here but I know what I know and have never bothered with figuring out my wireless broadband ... it's always been a CLICK and it's there!

Thanks for your time, anyways.

Cheers,

Nick

Nick,

You need a router/wireless access point in order to share the wireless broadband between your laptop and clie!

I'm using an ORINOCO RG-1000 which "provides wireless data communication between computers and the internet ... "

This beams to a little ORINOCO USB Client that sits on the computer ...

What more would I need?

As I said, wireless hotsync is fine and I can also use PalmVNC to wirelessly 'control' my computer ...

Cheers again all.

Nick

(oh yeah ... found the SSID!!).

pinaclassic is right, actually the broadband wireless hardware from PCCW seems to be only for single access, I assume (from window shopping), but haven't tried it myself, whereas the Wireless router I've tried it at my friend's house & it's cool. :D

Eddy ... what router is your buddy using? Is he still on Broadband?

Actually, that can't be right ... I remember having a borrowed laptop using it at my home, using a wireless lan card (PCMIA) ...

... the answer is probably so easy and right under my nose but I'm b*ggered if I can find it ...

... having a 20 month old baby boy running round doesn't give me much time, either!!!!

Cheers ...

Try www.hkultraline.com, there happens to some folks there which may be able to help you...

If I remember right the way PCCW setup the Orinoco AP router (yes it's capable...) is as a bridge... If you need to login on your computer using PPPoE clients than it's very likely...

In that case you need to reconfigure your Orinoco to be a router that will act as a local DHCP server itself.

There happens to me that there's no PPPoE client for Palm, yet.

Thanks for the reply ... I haven't had much time lately but will try to find the time to settle this ...

... this business about the PPPOE seems to be about right ... I'll have to sort this out ...

Many thanks.
