my 1st poll..... With DTG9 out, the usual upgrade price that's always been in effect is under debate again.

$30 is way too much. $15 might be reasonable. But for $30, it seems like you are buying a whole new application. I didnt bother to go to v.8 (when i had a palm device). PalmPDF was good enough for me.

The current price is in my opinion steep. I think $15 is more resonable. Especially considering that v9 will not support office 2007 versions and you have to pay another upgrade price to get that supported when 2007 comes out. (currently an additional 19.99 when you upgrade to v9).

I don't know much about the company, but I think they're taking their pricing strategy from Micro$oft. In the PC world, people have accepted paying far more for a release, for each release. But it can be said they're the one "innovating" (I use the term ever so lightly) the software and by comparison bringing vastly more to the table where Dataviz is just duplicating a very small portion of M$'s features simply to be interoperable with Palm.
I think their pricing is simply too steep. I wanted to avoid Dataviz. But since my foot was already in the lure because D2G was bundled on the LD, I justified paying an upgrade than looking to pay full price elsewhere, assuming all things are equal which I really shouldn't. However, I still bought the recent, vague promo upgrade as did others. I would not have bought it had I been informed of what support they've suddenly dropped. (I only recall them advertising features being added, no recollection of features taken away.)
Why? To increase their profits by supporting less? Bad move if so. And on the flip side to ask those who upgrade to pay yet more for Office 2007 support, misnomered as "insurance", adding insult to injury? C'mon. They're taking M$'s changes and what it means for Dataviz, out on their customers.
Caveat emptor.

I'm still on v6 that was bundled with my T3. I looked long & hard at what I would get with v9 and decided there is just not much there. Maybe when I go to Office2007, I'll reconsider, but not in the short term. Each upgrade, v7, v8, and v9, barely added any features, and support is very short. This reminds me of Iambic business practices.

Does the file browser work ok?? Just saw someone at BrightHand who is having problems on LD...
On a semi positive note, Mac users now get powerpoint editing on the handheld (but this has been working for PC users for a long time). I dont use PP anymore, just Mac Keynote which is excellent...

For me, version 9 was worth the 30 upgrade. It brought me a file browser to load documents, better handling of document features in Word and native PowerPoint creation/editing. This is something new for Mac and PC users. As said before, the native PowerPoint creation/editing is worth $30 alone for me.
Seems like Keynote imports/exports PowerPoint without problems, doesn't it? Been a while since I've used it and have definitely slept since then.
In regards to customer support, I talked with them on the phone regarding the upgrade to 9 from a recently purchased retail version 8. EXTREMELY nice and everything went extremely smooth. They even offered to upgrade my SmartList to Go version 2 to version 3 for $20 over the phone instead of the web based $30 upgrade for Mac users.

Keynote does indeed import/export PP although there are some issues. Youi are right also about the PP editing. I think previous versions allowed PP editing in PP2Go format but niot native, and only for PC desktop...I may be wrong!

How much would you reasonably pay for a major DTG update? Not $29.95! Actually, I find myself hardly using this application. Maybe some day my work will change my need/appreciation for it! ;)

Even at $20 i would consider it... i'd like to upgrade and I'll probaby do so... but i'll hope for some offer/sale in the not so distant future...

I don't think they'll offer one for 2 reasons.
1) Their most recent promo to upgrade to version 9 from version 7 offered zero savings...it was their normal upgrade price. I still can't figure out what distinguished that promo from what is offered right now other than the ability to posses the v.8 upgrade for all of a few weeks. Was it for hype?
2) They already plan to charge extra money for future 2007 format update.
Why would they suddenly change their minds and offer any discounts? I don't see it happening as much we all might hope.

If they keep REMOVING features, as they did 8 to 9, then it'll be hard to justify paying $20-$30 for an "upgrade." With each new version, you need to add features and only drop features that really aren't used.
Removing support for the non-native formats is questionable. You don't really NEED it. On the other hand, removing InboxToGo is just greed. They want you to buy a different product just to get functionality you're already paid for.
Just a quick point, but for those who have been using d2g that comes with a new pda (ie its in rom), the new version costs you about 5Mb of RAM..

DAMN MAN  :( !!! So that includes the full DTG9 Premium suite? Word To Go, Sheets To Go, Slideshow To Go, PDF To Go, Pics To Go, the InSync (or InTact, forgot what its called), fonts, and lexicons/dictionaries, but NOT Inbox To Go since they took that last one away?

Yes, it does take 5MBand it doesn't seem to be worth it on my T3. For some reason it's having a hard time with native Excel spreadheets. Iteither resets when opening them or when saving them. Quickoffice has no problem with the same files. I'm sticking with it rather than DTG. I wish DTG worked as advertised. I'd be tempted to keep it and pay the price.

Well... for version 9 you mean?
I think they would have to pay ME about... $20 for that downgrade.

I've tried D2G several times and didn't find it as buggy as Agendus always seems to be. Word and Excel are iapplications that are best left on a PC. PDAs are great for personal information and many other things, but not everything.

I fear it is so!!!
Reminds me of back in 1999. I had a PC with a 1GB hd. A roomate's PC game, Rainbow Six required 500MB+ hd space to install!! Now it's happening with Palm PDAs. 5.00MB for DTG9 and 4.00MB for Agendus9 (or wahtever curr vers is). That's alot for any heavier user with less than 30MB of user RAM.

I wouldn't even have upgraded to 8.x had it not come pre-installed on my Treo 700p. ;)

Ah yes, the never ending upgrade game........ every year they all need some more of our money, so they invent upgrades that have all the latest features that we all just have to have........ baloney
Once upon a time, personal computers were the thing to increase productivity, but when we all spend all the time to learn all the new features and overcome all the new bugs, productivity has flown out the window.
I know of a software company that cuts off its users by making it mandatory that you subscribe to yearly updates or you loose your upgrade capabilities and would have to buy the product new. The list price on the software is $3,500.00 or more depending on add-ons.....and subscriptions go for $500 a year..... I call it "software piracy". And, I didn't even get a kiss........
