I don't know what happened, I went to use my UX today and it had somehow reset to factory settings, everything I had was gone.
I had a good backup (done through Prefs>Power Saving), but that was missing too. I was able to sync and got everything back... I thought, but the icon for Netfront 3.1 was missing, and the icon for Netfront 3.0 had changed into a circle with a pencil. The error I get when trying to open NF 3.0 is "The application cannot be launched because of a system error."
So, I downloaded JAAmerican's file from here:
http://www.jamerican.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=19&sid=56a189451eaf0faf7d2c3c4eb4a33752
I copied the file (NetFront3.prc) to MS and I need help from that point. If I can't hot sync it, I don't understand how I can install it to RAM. I tried to copy it using CLIE Files and FileZ - is there another program?
Sorry for being so dense, it's been so long since I've had to actually do anything with the UX besides use it - I seem to have forgotten more than I learned :(

Thats really strange. The back-up should not have been deleted. Try another hard reset (and if you restored from a back-up last time, don't do it this time)

Thanks - just tried to do a hard reset and I get:
DataMgr.c,Line:9524, Index out of range
You may need to restart the handheld by
performing a soft reset. Please press the
RESET button.
There is a button that says RESET - I can't press that, and trying both a soft and hard reset from the back brings the same error message back.
I wish I'd never picked the thing up tonight!

Did you restore from a back-up when asked after the hard reset? Are you sure you are performing the hard reset correctly?
If you did do it correctly and did not restore, try pulling the battery for about 10 minutes.

No, I didn't restore from backup on the first hard reset because nothing was there, it was the strangest thing. What happened was, I opened it and it looked as it did when I bought it - none of my settings, programs, etc. I did a hard reset at that point and there wasn't any back up.
I was able to sync it and it restored everything, except the NetFront 3.1 icon was missing and the NetFront 3.0 icon had changed. I thought that was all that was wrong, everything else appeared to work fine, I was able to connect with bluetooth and signed onto AIM.
Just now, I tried both hard and soft reset and I got the error I posted above. I can tell each reset because of how quickly the error comes back up. On soft reset I get the "Palm Powered" screen pretty fast. On hard reset, it takes longer and I hear a noise before I get the "Palm Powered" screen.
The only idea I have now is to let the battery drain all the way and hope that might do something different. I don't know if the thing is dying or what - but you'd think it wouldn't be acting like this, it's too strange.

oh forgot to say thanks for responding so quickly and also that I've never taken the battery out so am assuming that involves a screwdriver and other things I'm afraid of lol
If nothing happens after the battery drains, I'll try to figure out how to do that. Luckily the error is staying on with the screen at full brightness, so it shouldn't take long to kill the battery.

A hard reset is where you hold the power button, press the reset button, hold it until the palm powered screen, then release it and press up on the hard reset menu.
Don't HotSync because that's restore the old back-up which is messing up.

I was doing the hard reset - now it won't do anything and it's stuck on a blank light-blue screen. I'm going to leave it and go to bed and hope it does something tomorrow. Thanks - will look up how to take the battery out in the morning.

Running down the battery brought it back up, it asked if I wanted to restore to my only backup, which was today. I backed up after the sync when I lost everything.
I'm still missing NF 3.1, but I have 3.0 and it works.
I think I'm back to my original question which is...
How can I install NetFront3.prc from MS to RAM without doing it via sync?

Have another look at the thread on JAmerican's forum, in particular the last post - I think the file you need must be named differently to that stored in RAM. The final post in the thread has a different file to that found in the first post and it is called NetFront31.prc. I suggest you give that one a go using the instructions....

Thanks, everything is working again now. My problem was trying to move the file with FileZ, I found an old archived thread about using McFile Beta for OS 5 and that worked.
Whew! Nothing like having to figure out how I did something over 2 years ago.
