I know that there are some skilled developers around here :) both Palm and Java...

So the question is:

Wouldn't it be possible to control a music player on Palm (eg AeroPlayer or PocketTunes, via plugin) from a Bluetoot Java mobile phone?

...if there is any Bluetooth API in Jave, I don't even know :)

I would be a definitive buyer!

Thanks for reading, and please share your thoughts!

There are for certain phones, but is it really worth it?

Edit:

You could use Obex and send special Vcard (phonebook) entries. but I believe you would have to acknowledge on the palm.

Another one would be VfComm, with a server on the Palm and a client on the phone. But if you have the connection always up it will drain the battery faster. If you initiate the connection just for sending the command, I don't know if this will not stop the music? Don't know.

I would be surprised if there was that much demand for controling one portable device with another. :-)

Thanks for your replies!

Yes, I expected the BT connection to be up all the time... the battery drain is the price of the connection :)

Well, I don't know others, but i would use it as a remote control for palm when used as a personal mp3 player... the T3 is too bulky in the hand to fiddle with the controls... think on for example the iaudio U3 for size. A Java phone could be much smaller (no, not a smartphone :)

And also, control the palm when hooked up to the home sound system... I would be able to control from anywhere in the house... given its not too big :)

I think that no one did really think about this untill now... I think it would be cool!

Any chance of you willing to do it?
Pretty please? ;)

I guess I can see that. The remote control on my NX70 is the main reason I still have it--it's nice to be able to pause the book I'm listening to or adjust the volume.

But I know nothing about bluetooth.

I've been doing this to some degree already with a bluetooth keyboard, I have the Thinkoutside BT keybooard and it controlled any application on my Treo 650 from across the room, but now that I have upgraded to the Treo 700p the five way on my BT keyboard will not work completely with Pockettunes it will only raise and lower the volume for now, till Thinkoutside updates the keyboards drivers.

Morden: as the mobile phones quite different in BT implementation for Java, what is your mobile phone? Writing the Palm part isn't that difficult.

My phone is a Sharp GX-15... but I thought that the goal of Java was to be platform independent?

Isn't all J2ME solutions compatible?

Well, the main core is platform independent but when it comes to stuff like BT, Camera etc. you will find special classes for each different vendor.

Wouldn't mind, but as far as I see, there isn't any public available SDK for Sharp mobile phones and acording to SUN the devices isn't compatible with the J2ME bluetooth API. If if it would, the API doesn't seem to be very useful. I fear it isn't possible.

Is there a list of supported phones? Maybe the SE750 is supported?

http://developers.sun.com/techtopics/mobility/device/pub/device/list.do?apiId=81

It must support JSR 82 as far as I understand it right now.

my SE s700i has a java BT remote program built in, and i used it just as was mentioned to control my axim x51v through the HID profile.

the problem is that my clie doesn't have the HID profile natively, so what we need is a program that can provide that profile.

if anyone knows a was for me to download this program off my phone i'd be happy to provide it. if it would help?

xcalibre:

Isn't it possible to send the jave program via Bluetooth or Irda to a Palm or pc?

That would be great :) for a starter :)

Thanks!
