View Full Version : Compact Flash driver, who cares anyway?

Okay, you guys spent all this time and energy creating this driver to use a CF memory card, right, and everyone is fighting over why should we have to pay. Well you should, if someone spent the damn time to make it. Although be it doesn't really work all that well. Did you ever think about the fact that Sony will probably reinder the slot useless for anything other than a wireless card in the next update for the Wireless driver or OS.
Any way, now we have upto 1GB memory sticks. SO, what was the purpose?
- What possibly, save money over Sony's memory hold on their products.
- No to mention the fact that Memory Sticks suck out a hell of a lot less power during operation from the Clie than a CF card. Even though the only both suggest 3.3v (that CF type I only)
If you use a CF card for applications, music, and movies you'd better bring a long extension cord. That onboard controller is going to need it.

I like the screen name... I bet those are the sentiments exactly... lol.
I have to say though... my couple weeks using my CF card havn't shown any decreased battery life at all. Dual expansion is a dream because you can mix applications and documents. If you have a card with games, and a card with ebooks, you can have both loaded at one time if you want. And now that we have 1gig MSPro, we also have 1gig CF cards... so that gives us 2 gig if we want. Very exciting.

Who cares? Obviously the people that follow these forums.
What possibly? You tell me...either go spend MORE money to get MORE memory, or use this driver with my EXISTING supply of CF cards.
Did you ever think about the fact that Sony will probably reinder the slot useless for anything other than a wireless card in the next update for the Wireless driver or OS.? ---- That thought DID, in fact cross my mind. It'll only go a long way towards proving that Sony cares more for profits than it does for those of us that support Sony by purchasing their products.
If you use a CF card for applications, music, and movies you'd better bring a long extension cord. That onboard controller is going to need it.---- You ASSume that everyone is going to use the CF card almost exclusively. Personally, I'd just like the ability to quickly access an archived EBook from the CF card then go right back to my wireless card.
Poking fun at someone that touts a CF driver just before April Folls is one thing. Actually WAITING until it is released makes you an idiot troll. Posting as a Guest makes you a coward. Come back for discussion AFTER you've registered.

What's the BFD? People who want it will pay the money and use it. People who don't, won't.

The release of the CF driver just made the Clie NX/NZ the best Palm OS pda around. The ability to use the MS, CF, SD using a CF adapter is a big step. As TheMooch has said, you will not use the CF everytime you turn on your Clie, but the ability of having the option of using the CF slot, other than for WiFi, is the actual point.
What is now stopping EruWare then from creating drivers for CF bluetooth, gps, 802.11g, wifi integrated with memory, etc. Sony might not release another model with a CF slot but then, the NX/NZ will still be the perfect models if they can fully support all CF devices out there.
As for battery life, here's an idea, we can ask George of SliverSlider to create a battery extension sleeve. ;)

Sony will release at least one more device with a CF slot. This is because most devices are planned months in advance and they can't change its specs before the release.
I heard rumors (From Cliesource and Clieplanet) that a new device should be released soon. I'm sure it will have a CF slot.

This guys gotta be joking.
I was at work today (doing about 3 hours of paperwork) and used the mp3 player with the compact flash(1g viking) the entire 3 hours. Had the display on (50%) as I had to reference my address and date books continuously and still had 71 % power left! I'm actually sort of surpised.
I'm learnng very quicky that there's always going to be someone out there trying bring others down with their garbage. I suppose they have right to express their opinions no matter how negative. But geez, give it a chance. Most haven't even recieved their reg. code yet! But again, "if they ain't talkin about you, you ain't doing nothin" Keep up the good work EruWare. You built it..here we come!

Hey guess what, I care.
Better not get into checking spelling errors and grammar or some of the Kings of this site will need remediation too ;).
A lot of people don't care about this driver, so what?

Right, but this one sounds more like sour grapes. If they didn't care, then why bother posting that they don't care?

It may be the cost of CF compared to MS. However, what is most important, is the versatility. Most people I know have a CF adapter for their notebook computers. Many use CF in their cameras. I have two cameras, one uses MS, the other CF. Get the picture yet? (Pun intended ;) )

Same reason all the other meaningless drivel is posted. Some feel a need to communicate that which is only significant, funny, clever, etc to themselves. Not uncommon in human discourse.

I'm all about that CF slot!!! I hope Eruware gets wealthy for there excellent work in filling the void that Sony left undone.
I've got a digital camara that will continue to be my main camara for years that uses CF memory. This will go great with my NX Clie CF slot. A slide show to go!!!
Sure we all would like the software for a buck or two, but $27 isn't even a good dinner out with the wife... get real... support Eruware and hush.
Peace.:)

I downloaded the driver today only to be told that I would have to wait up to 48 hours for a registration code to activate it on my NX70. This is most unusual for an online order. Anybody else have this trick puiled on them?

I believe it's a case of "underpromise and overdeliver". Most received their reg code within 24 hrs.

This is a standard waiting time. Usually we don't have to wait that long. The other item is that it's worldwide and there needs to be allowances in time zone differences. You can't have puchased much software if you didn't know about this. It happens all the time whether it's a Clie or a Desktop PC. It doesn't mean that I like though, as I always want my stuff yesterday :D!

Well it seems like most of us like the idea of having this new driver. I think it is great. I mean, if you CAN have it then why not?! We might as well use this slot if we can. It's like saying "why should my pc have an extra usb port, I only have one usb device? who the hell cares" but then what happens when you get something new that is usb and have to keep switching between the 2? In other words, respect what is being offered b/c you never know when you may need it.

Well, if the first post of this thread really came from a SONY developer, then it's quite embarassing. I assume that the boss of this 'developer' would kick his *ss posting an inofficial statement in the name of SONY. Very unprofessional indeed.
I personally think that SONY made a mistake introducing a Clie series with CF slot that does not support storage cards. What was the goal of introducing the CF slot? Supporting only wireless LAN and AirH cards (in Japan)?
The CF driver is not yet perfect and many applications do not support multiple volumes, but so far many users seem to be happy with it. Even if the 'SONY Developer' does not like the driver and the idea behind it, it has at least been proven that SONY did not fully meet the customer requirements in this case. Do it better next time 'SONY developer' and tailor your products to the needs of the majority of the users. This community proves that many people like SONY PDAs, but we are not happy about 'sour grapes' from SONY R&D guys.

I got mine within 2 hours. They are just covering themselves in case yours or theirs e-mail servers are slow.

Right. Today and yesterday web access in general has been slow here (at a client site). Some simple pages are taking minutes to display. My email server is 1700 miles from here and I received my reg code in 2.5 hours.
I would have to agree that waiting 48 hours seems like a long time, but considering some of us have been waiting, praying and hoping for over 6 months, I don't think 48 more hours is a long wait. I know, easy for me to say since I already have the code! ;)

You know, I read these boards nearly every day but don't post much cause someone usually expresses just the point I would. Although this thread is pretty much right on with what I would have responded to "SonyDeveloper" (If that's really who this is?), I guess I would only add a statement of pity for someone who has to resort to comments like his/hers to get attention. But I also agree that this community has given the right responses.
Sonydeveloper, if you are for real then either give the customer what they want, make money, and be happy, ...or go away!

I would have thought the whole idea behind Sony putting the slot on their devices would be to enter into the CF market. Let's face facts in todays business world you either lead, follow or die a slow painful death. There are more cf cards on the market vs memory sticks. This is an untapped market for Sony. If I was a betting man I would put money on the fact that Sony will most likely release a cf card of their own. Take a hard look at Sony. They don't take over a market....they dominate it.
SonyDeveloper <====== The more you're making mistake, is the more st*pid you are.
