Hi there!

as a new Clie nx70v user, here is my first question to you guys. I hope someone can help.

The Sony documentation is very vague about running apps from the Memory Stick, saying that some won't work, or won't operate fully.

Can someone tell me which apps are problematic? (Sony never names any!...)

and what kinds of problems are we talking about? (manipulating /editing files on the MS? installing /removing /HotSynching files on MS?)

I would like to install a lot of stuff onto my 124 MB stick (apps, utilities, pictures, voice recordings, databases, etc.) -- that's why I bought the MS, after all.

TIA!

Dee

Start here, as your questions require lenghty answers. Most apps can be run from the MS, but there are exceptions and there are also work arounds like using PowerRun. The link below may help you get up to steam first.

Its a pretty serious limitation if you have to have enough available RAM on the device itself to run an app from the MS because it has to copy itself back into RAM first in order to run. This is especially true since my TG-50 has only 11MB available to begin with, and most large apps take FOREVER to copy. What happens if an application is say larger than 16MB?!? then you can't run it at all!? whats the point of the MS if only for static storage?

oh yeah, and since the TG-50 runs OS5 pidirect is not an option :( too bad since that would solve most of my problems.

Nekrataal~The largest app I've EVER run in all the years I've owned a PDA was just over 2MB. It was a game...it didn't take a horrible amount of time to load . . . I'm just curious. Are you speaking theoretically about an app being 16 meg, or do you actually have one that size? I've never seen one . . . (only PPC apps get THAT big ;))

Unregistered~ most applications have readme files in the zip you download. Most will say if they can run off a card, and if the databases can be moved or not. As long as you look for OS5 compatable software, you should be just fine. Much older and non-upgraded software can run off the card, but is NOT VFS friendly so you usually can't store the databases there.

If you find something you want to try that does not specifically say OS5 compatable, BACKUP (BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP) and try it . . .

You may want to consider making an OS5 friendly backup program one of your first purchases. Mine has saved me more than once.

Good luck!

Additionally, make rolling backup copies of your memory stick to your hard drive too.

As yellowrose has hinted, one can never have too many backups :)!

Mapopolis is 600k, and its maps for Los Angeles county is 8MB. Problem is, I have to copy all 8MB into RAM in order to run it, and that takes nearly 30 sec with PowerRun. That is simply unacceptable. What I really need is a OS5 compatible pidirect.

We all wish that and if you find one please let us know.

PiTech said awhile back they had no intention of updating to OS5

We need clies with at least 32mb of RAM
