View Full Version : Transforming Clie-UX into a phone

Are there any hacks, apps, or programs that will let the Clie UX series act as a phone? I know the Universals and Wizards are out, but I like my UX and it would be great if I could combine my cell phone and PDA all into one. I'm not a HEAVY phone user, but I would like to receive and make calls to other phones.
Has anybody tried this? Does an application already exist? Thanks.

That would be so great if you can have the ux act as a phone. But I dont think this is possible since the ux is not built with a carrier specific antenna i.e. CDMA, GSM etc. and even if some one figured out a way to mod a antenna there is a need for sim card and associated software. you can always go for a treo...

Yeah, but Treos are so ghetto and ugly, not to mention useless and junk.

Which Treos are you looking at? They look and work fine for me. . . And the UX50 is so compact as it is that fitting a radio in there is near impossible. You could maybe take out the memory slot, but why would you EVER do that? ;)

I can't wait to try out a voip solution, once i find one that works with the ux, or when someone develops one.

I think that there may have been some VOIP software being made... just can't remember where I saw it... :(

You could possibly cut up and hide a T610 or similar in an extra clip-on battery (EB40) and communicate to dial via bluetooth - you'd have to use a headphone jack to use the phone.
Also keep in mind (can't find the link just now) Sony showed a UX50 replacement that had an integrated cell phone...

But how many demo units have Sony unveiled only to never actually release the product? Remember the Memory Stick TV Tuner anyone?

I waited for quite a while for the Sony eBook Reader. Two years or so, now? It never came out -- it was delayed and delayed and delayed, and the last I heard was it'd be out in September. Nah. Never mind that it already has worse specs than the eBook readers that since did appear on the market.
Oh, and a fix for ImageConverter and versions of Quicktime newer than 6.5 created movies not viewable on the UX50 was supposed to be fixed "real soon now" (tm). When was that again? Back in mid 2005?
The PlayStation 3 will eventually make it to the market, but who will buy something that's overpriced, underperforming, and a generation behind what the competition released a year earlier?
Sony, you had your days. These days you're just an expensive joke. We can't trust you. It's time for you to do the honorable Japanese thing, really.

Hey, but anyone ever tried the Neo Mini 4-in-1 with some CF or SD/mmc based device made for Palm OS? It could work as an adapter for some tools such as Margi Presenter to Go or something...altough it could be bulky :o

Do you mean the Librie? That certainly was released and to my understanding was on it's second release... (link (http://www.sony.jp/products/Consumer/LIBRIE/)).

I suspect that driver support would be the problem with this idea :(

I guess you simply didn't go to sony's site frequently enough.
IC1.503 with support for Quicktime7 was released Dec, 2005.

All ImageConverter 1.x downloads were discontinued May, 2006.

And as far as I know, I've only experienced incompatabilities with QT7, but never with QT6.5.
The update for QT7 support was avaliable about a month after QT7 for windows was released. Not very fast, but it's no vaporware.

I mean the English version. The first release never happened for the English model, despite several announcements. The second release is now named the "Portable Reader System (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_BrowseCatalog-Start?CategoryName=pa_pdr&Dept=audio)", and was supposed to be in the stores in April 2006.
I see they now have changed the text to "Coming this fall, in time for the holidays." Yerright. It'll get my vote for Vaporware on Wired, unless the PS3 gets delayed again.

Excuse me? I didn't go to the Japanese site frequently enough? I'm sorry, but I don't speak Japanese, and this was never released on the English site, nor made available through the update manager. Nor is it an English version, for that matter.

If it's promised but not made available, it's vaporware. That it was released for Japanese models for Japanese readers doesn't change this from being vaporware for non-Japanese users.
See here (http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/news-item.pl?mdl=PEGUX50&news_id=104) for the promise.
See here (http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=PEGUX50&UpdateType=Updates) for the lack of release.
