ok too vague

when i copy the .mqv files to my harddrive. the music videos play in a good size (no clue what that size is) but when i look at teh movies of my friends, then they're half the size, but i want them the same size as the MVs they certainly look the same when i see them on the pda

Okay, now you are making more sense, although I can't answer the question for converting to mpeg.

I just copy my few movies to my desktop and use Quicktime 6.0 to view them with. I just double click on the file and it runs.

The name they have on the Clie isn't the real filename. You would just have to rename them on the desktop.

Every movie has an associated ( .mai file ) stored in another folder. /Palm/Programs/Movie player folder. That is probably where the name you gave it is stored, plus thumbnails, and stuff.

All of it is to be compatible with a regular Sony cameras too.

You can use QuickTime Pro (that's the paid version) to export MQV files to other formats. You have to use the All Files (*) filter to see the MQV files in the File Open window. However, the list of file formats you can export to is rather limited-- most of them I have never heard of and I suspect they're Mac-only formats.
Open the MQV file in QuickTime Pro and do File/Export.
