View Full Version : Anyone else disappointed by Apple Keynote?

I really thought that Jobs was going to leave us with a surprise of there being a new touchscreen iPod. I personally don't want one, but I love to watch the Mac keynotes because its a great way to surprise your consumers. I must say though that this is the first keynote that I've watched where Mac fans just were not clapping, even when he showed them the size of the iTV, no one was clapping. Luckily Jobs started with the iPod because if he ended with it, he would have damaged people's hopes for a new iPod because they would have been waiting all that time for one. I actually felt bad for the guy because it was like no one was interested. Only thing that really got people happy was the new Shuffle, which we all were expecting in January of this year and had long since forgotten about it.
I actually have thought of something. I recently started to become found of Apple laptops due to some report 5~6hrs of battery life, something I find amazing. I also want to understand the Mac. Something a lot of us PC fans do is bash Macs without trying them (I was one of those people). Now I am not getting a MacBook for I already have a powerful Windows PC, so I am getting a cheaper Powerbook G4 so I can do my work mobily as well as get to know the Mac and see why really so many people love it. I see people who use Macs as dedicated users because they don't use it for the reasons Windows users use their PCs. I know that if you ask any Windows user why he or she uses their PC, they will either say because of the mass amount of software available or because everything is compatible with it. This will be my experiment during college to critique the Mac OS and Windows OS and see which I like better (of course in my POV). I just started playing PC games like Call of Duty 2, which I do not have a Mac version of, so I can't play it on the Mac I may get but I hope to let you all know how it goes. First, I have to get one so once I do, I'll let you all know. BTW, the reason I didn't go for a G3 laptop is because Leopard is not compatible with it and Leopard is a definate on my list if I am able to get a laptop.
This post is not to attack Apple as a Windows user but just to question the strength of this keynote and if they should have held off on it until a Video iPod were released. What do you guys think?

I wasn't expecting a video iPod. I was only expecting Movies on iTunes. I was actually surprised by all the new stuff... :)
For the first time in ages, I didn't wake up early (the keynote was about 4am here) and "tuned in" to my RSS feeds. I just went straight to apple.com and TOTALLY enjoyed what surprised me there.
You see, I just laugh at rumors and who-posts-first sites claiming they have inside information. I just go direct to the source. It's less stressful.
It feels good. :)

Bejeweled!
Bejeweled!
I wonder how difficult the game would be during the higher levels. Bejeweled needs a stylus/mouse.

Anybody wanna bet that the "new" version of the 5G ipod will be akin to the "4.5G" ipod with photo that relatively quickly came and went prior to the introduction of the real 5G ipod?

@ JAmerican: I purchased a Macbook Pro in June for the same reasons that you stated; heard a lot about Macs (from loyal Mac users) and didn't know much about the systems and what they had to offer. I'll reserve my comments until you've had your own experience with your new machine.
Just found a "hidden gem" in the new iTunes 7. The new 'View' selection (to the left of the 'Search' window on the Mac version) supports something called Cover Flow, which presents your Library's album art in a totally cool manner.
Check it out!

I've yet to get one due to my budget makes it difficult. I'm looking really to spend $400 max. So I may have to wait a few more months before I can get one.

YUP! Cover Flow used to be a separate application. It's so good that Apple decided to buy it and integrate it with iTunes. I actually am a fan of Cover Flow and I love that it's now standard with iTunes.

I too am I fan of Cover Flow. Although I really liked it more to browse through album covers, not songs... I like to just have them in alphabetical order.

6 hours with G4 laptop??
Maybe with the new intel one. My father has G4 laptop and i dont think it can make 6 hours...maybe 4.
Sorry, maybe my opinion is totaly wrong, maybe my father just has an old battery, but his new IBM t43p lasts longer and isn't as heavy.

With a fresh battery and battery in power saving mode (and not doing anything powerful) I believe 6 hours is possible...

My 4 year old TIBook got 5 hours in its early days on conserve mode. If I buy a newer higher capacity batter, I can expect about 6.5 hours. But it's still no where as efficient as these newer Intels and AMD notebook chips.
My TIBook weighs 5.3 pounds wtih a 15.2" inch screen. I noticed the IBM t43p was 5.3 pounds with a 15.1" sreen. The newer G4s weighed 5.6 pounds though. The extra weight probably accounts for the FW 800 and DVI port, but then again, one would think that an ancient oversized parallel-port and cd-eject-tray would add more weight. But magnesium is lighter than aluminum, if I recall correctly. :)
My friend's older T43 or T42 had one of those petruding batteries sticking out the back. I'm glad my brothers didnt' have that cheese, not sure what model his TP is, but He bought it on eBay earlier this year for 300 with an extra battery.
Rambles.

Yeah, I did see Steve Job do the following:
SJ: I give you the new iPod
-silence-
...
SJ: ...the new iPod nano, in aluminum
-silence-
...
SJ: the new shuffle
-clap......clap, clap.........clap.................clap-
...
I personally think the best part of that keynote is the music proformance in the end :P
As an owner of a MacBook, I'll tell you this:
long battery life? yes.
Light weight? never.
And get prepared to burn your legs.
But sure, the best part is the stable and responsiveness of Mac OSX

Exactly, I felt bad for him. As for getting a MacBook, not only do I have a Windows desktop but I have a somewhat expensive one at that. Which leaves me with little money to buy a laptop. If anyone has an old iBook or Powerbook with a 12"~14" in good to like new condition, let me know via PM. Even if the machine has MHz speed, I'll look at it. All I really need is OSX Tiger or Panther on it and WiFi built in as well as it to be a G4 machine so I can get Leopard later on.
Thanks.

i just want to say that the first computer i've ever used was a MAC and it was at school. i never really liked that thing but when i got a windows computer, i dont know but i think i liked it more because it was more intuitive. all my school uses MAC and i dont really like the interface.
My first computer was an Apple II+, then an Amiga, a PC a few years after, then switched to the Mac. Of all of them I like the Amiga and OS X interfaces the best. It was refreshing to use Windows XP after Windows 3.11... it's the same feeling when I moved on from OS 9 to OS X.
