View Full Version : Top 5 Launchers?

I'm interested in seeing what the top 5 launchers are here at CS. I'm not interested in debate/arguments . . . (I know which one is better . . . lol)
If I left out what you use, PM me and I'll add it so you can vote!
What do you think the top 5 will be?

All these apps are available at PalmGear, and prices are in US dollars.

I LOVE LauncherX. I think picture backgrounds are too busy. I'd rather have my backrounds white, or other solid colors...but, that's just me. My 2 cents.

ZLauncher rules! Also own MegaLauncher and Launch 'Em, and neither comes close. YiShow was a player at the end of last year, but has since been pretty much abandoned.

Well, ZLauncher gives you that option too and much much more. I am a registered user of LaunchEm, Launcher III, MegaLauncher and LauncherX in that sequence till v3.00 of ZLauncher which finally overtook LX in my opinion.
ZL's File Manager is also much more powerful than LXBrowser and beta testers are reporting it works very well with the upcoming CF driver.
Also, I appreciate ZL developer's vigorous development compared to LX's. No one really know whatever happened to Bozidar.

I started on CRS Launcher, but bought Zlauncher about a month ago. :) CRS launcher was much better than the default, I eventually just wanted more power. :)

Y'know, I've seen many criticisms of LX. Fact of the matter is, as a previous user of Launcher III, I paid only $5.95 for the upgraded program. Secondly, I don't think that continual programming activity is a prerequisite to dubbing a program "good." Take Windows, for instance (please!). The LX interface is clean, editable, and runs VFS applications much more transparently than others. Frankly, I find a message like "launching VFS program" or someting similar intrusive and unnecessary. ZLauncher, while interesting, is still a work in progress. I like to have configurability, but a consistent interface would also be nice. I like a wealth of features, but having to dive in different places all the time to ferret them out is not my cup of tea. There are no winners or losers here - it's a matter of personal preference based upon, well, personal preferences. My .02...

I started with LauncherIII and I used that for over an year and half (on a Visor Deluxe and N760). Since then I've registered MegaLauncher, YiShow, Launcher X, and ZLauncher. And I have to say ZLauncher is the best (and the 2nd cheapest behind LIII) one of them, at least for me.
It's true that continual programming activity does necessarily represent how "good" a program is. But in ZLauncher's case, the developer continues to update its product based on user feedback, not to fix security holes and bugs (coughMicro$oftcough). ZL was a good launcher starting with V2.0 and they just steadily added features we requested (in a short period of time too). To me that's worth the $12 I paid.

Also started with LauncherIII, then Silverscreen (on a Visor Prism). Moved up to my present Sony T665C and registered and loved YiShow. Then, as Tanker Bob said, ZLauncher pulled away from the pack in '03 and now ZL rules! :)

YiShow, ZLauncher,LauncherX, Megalauncher, silverscreen.
I have trial some launchers. LauncherX and Megalauncher are my first choose. But soon ZLauncher attracts me. Frankly it is a little bit complex because its power features.Well,be patient . Given you have knew how friendly and thoughtful it is, you would hard refuse it. In fact,no matter what's your flavor,it can absolutely satisfied you.

I am one of the few. I use the built in ClieLauncher. It had a good price, and it does just what i need: it launches programs. I dont spend that much time in the launcher itself to require many features, i am to busy running apps and games and my ebook reader. :)

I started with Silverscreen way back on my 505. Shortly after getting my NR I registered YiShow and was very happy with ability to use backrounds and many skins available.
Real soon after I bought my NZ I tried ZLauncher out after seeing some amazing skins here at ClieSource. Soon after I also registered it and have been very happy with the power and flexiblity.

1 more vote for Zlauncher.
I used to be a long time user of megalauncher (in fact since the first time I bought my palm IIIe) and move on to Yishow for one week before moving on to Zlauncher last December.
I seriously believe that no force could ever make me change launcher again.

I voted for ZLauncher. When I had my Visor, I used Launcher III. When, I switched to my NR70V, I didn't like the low res appearence so I switched to MegaLauncher. I tried YiShow but the persistent hard resets drove me away. When LX came out, I switched without hesitation. But the lack of updates (or support as experienced by others) made a little worried about the program's future. True it is a great program, but there were a few features that I wanted that would make it perfect. With that lack of developer support, I worried that they would never get added. I switched to ZLauncher because it was the closest to what I wanted, was stable, and the developer support made me confident that what features it did lack would be added soon enough.

To be fair, I'd still be using LauncherX with all its missing promised functions if there isn't a product called ZLauncher. LX is a decent launcher (without active skin and homer) and I was a long time user of LIII. But ZL is just superior and it has everything I like about LIII/LX.

I've purchased SS, then LauncherX. I'm more than disappointed with the latter but that's another story.
One of the features I love in SS is the ability to see (& thus beam!) a database from an installed program to another Clie with the same program.
Is there any way to do this with ZLauncher? If so, I'll try what seems to be a feature-rich, well-supported, & from what I've read well-written program. Just tell me how complicated (or easy) this might be if indeed it is possible.
tanker_bob

You can do that from the file manager in ZL. Just tap on the file and then tap beam on the pop-up menu.

My vote has to go to SilverScreen. I have tried ZLauncher, YiShow, LauncherX, Launch'Em... All of them have lots of good features, no doubt about it, but they just seem to clutter the screen (and my Clie is an NR70V). SilverScreen does all that I need, without the clutter, and looking sharp and elegant. I sure hope the do include a background feature, though, on the next release...

Go here for a screen shot of ZL which probably has the most uncluttered options of any launcher available.

Plus, you could get rid of those gray boxes if you turn off the option for them in the top bar setup and bottom bar setup, so it could be even a little less uncluttered. SilverScreen never struck me as an uncluttered launcher. To each their own, but I always throught SS was the first eye-candy launcher, which by definition is not uncluttered.

I forgot about that:)
To me a screen looks cluttered when there are icons fill up the whole screen and cover the background. That is why we have category tabs to distribute the icons into proper tabs (folders) This MegaLauncher (ML) screenshot (http://www.cliesource.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=408&papass=&sort=1&thecat=506) is what I feel as an uncluttered look, where I can find all of my Tools (Utility) apps w/o blocking the background image. If I want to put more icons, ML allows up to 9 columns. That means I can pack 36 apps (4 rows) w/o blocking the nice view of the car. And my old N760C screen is only 320x320.
ML also has lock tab, as shown here (http://www.cliesource.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=441&papass=&sort=1&thecat=500), where you can lock confidential apps/files. The contents are not displayed in the 'All' tab and you cannot exit ML w/o entering the right password.

I'll see your "clean" ML screen and raise you my standard ZL screen here (http://www.cliesource.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=415&papass=&sort=1&thecat=500). Notice the transparency of the tabs and tool bar. I could also have hidden the bottom tool bar as you did in ML, but this screen shot is how I normally use ZL. Besides, ZL's tool icons are considerably smaller and less intrusive than ML's in my opinion.
Tanker, that looks cool. I like the transparency tab. Hopefully ML can do that in the next version.
When you say smaller, how many icons can you pack in one row? To me the fonts in ZL's app icon names look bigger than that of ML. Can it be adjusted?

Yes, the font sizes can be adjusted. Or you can turn the icon names off completely.
You can fit 9 icons per row.

Just about everything in ZL is adjustable. :) I tried turning the icon names off at one point, but I have too many apps to remember them all by icon. I tried various arrangements and found that five across with the smallest readable font size for me works out best for my purposes.

If that is how you define uncluttered, I might as well keep the default launcher. It looks cleaner, save lots of RAM space, and most of all FREE.
Please post a screenshot, so I understand better of what you meant by "uncluttered".
Thanks
Sideway & tanker_bob, thanks for your replies.
I hope MegaSoft2000 read this and act up on ML. I already bought ML long-long time ago after reading your site, tanker_bob, and just don't want to spend another $12 on launcher.
Lock tab in ML is cool. May be ZL needs to have that too, considering it wants to have just about everything that anybody wants to have in a launcher.

Wow, quite a list. Thanks a lot!
I use LauncherX, although the customer support is non-existent. It's a good thing that the app is stable and well-designed!
For my 2 cents, it's the only launcher that has a refined appearance. I respect the fact that many other users love having pictures in the background and a dense/busy UI. I am on the other side of that coin.
That said, if the question was "What launcher would I recommend?", I'd have to think twice, and I might go with some other launcher, based entirely on the unbelieveably bad customer support from LauncherX.
So, it's a mixed message I guess.

It is all how you set it up too. There are transparencies, tabs, menus... All are customizable from inside ZL. You can make any theme look less cluttered, it is not just the theme, but the settings that makes it look the way you want.

I've used all the launchers listed here, and I have to say, ZLauncher has the most power and versitility of all of them. I'll never look back. I recently upgraded to v3.01 and I'm finding that the honeymoon has just started again.
Apparently, based on problems I've read from others, I am the only one on the entire planet who is running LX with out a problem ever. This includes the LIII - LX cross grades and the few updates they've had. I started with LaunchEm, which was hands down the best launcher going. Switched to LIII when the MemPlug updates came out a year ago, and moved to LX. I guess I'm protecting my investment, though I think LX is a great product. With no updates in sight, I may have to break down and try Zlauncher.

There is only one launcher and that is ZLauncher. You get value and versatility that's beyond compare. BTW, did I mention the outstanding support?

wnm, you are not alone on the planet. I have used LX since the public release without a hitch. Fits my needs very well.
If I was a person who needed all the visual stimuli then perhaps I want something else. I find Zlauncher to be overkill.
Observation tells me that the beloved launcher for many changes the minute something new and improved is released. First it was Megalauncher, then YiShow and now Zlauncher. Zlauncher may turn out to be the end all, be all for many. Who knows?

There are a few power users that have over 100+ apps on their clies. The more the merrier :)! After being at it for a few years, one has a tendency to accumulate a few. For example I had Splash Photo which is fine app, but Acid Image came along and it's a fine app too. So instead of dumping one, I end up keeping both. So it just keeps going, next thing you know, your memory stick is over flowing...

I am a ZLauncher fan and registered user... true and blue. My only request now is for the ability to choose the "locked" default setting for the battery life left, time versus date, MS info, etc. at the bottom of the screen (or top... wherever one prefers). I love these features, but I press them all the time and they tend to switch (maybe this is already there... if so, could someone help me?).

When you want to tap them, just tap and hold them, then slide the stylus off of them to prevent changing the display. This is true of any item on the screen.

Tanker Bob,
I do do that, but I don't like this method as a preferred method because I don't always double tap or pick up my stylus before sliding completely off. Then I am forced to tap through all of the views till I get the one that I like. This is also true for the date, and MS views. This is just a request and desire for future development. Because of this, I hardly use this menu and keep it hidden then to have to deal with all of the tapping.
Either way, I still love this app and think it is great!
Way to go ZLauncher!

I was attracted to LauncherX because of its interface with SnapperMail, but the overwhelming consensus of opinion led me to consider zLauncher. But I was deterred by the 300k hit; most days I only have 1.8 MB free in RAM (less if I've been browsing online). It was TheSpies who persuaded me to stick with the CLIE Launcher, which I have found very functional.
But, I do miss Rondo's even cleaner interface -- as well as being able to customize my screen wallpaper. Spies, I'm waiting for your TG skin maker!

I am making very good progress. There is only one main bitmap now to edit (if you have ever used my NX version it is the bitmap called "fullsmall.bmp"). The Beam, info, and trash icons will still have to be edited though. It already works fine and makes skins fine but i want to add some more features, clean up the interface, remove a wrinkle or two,etc...

It is public as far as I know. I bought this disk with all these icon and pictures on it that I use for my bulletin. I don't know what the copyright laws are for that (do you have to own the disk's to use?). If that means you can use it, then go for it. I am just not an expert on that. I do know that I can use it, since I own the disks. I hope that helps (even if it is muddled in my confusion).

WOW . . . just looking at these statistics . . . Zlauncher is used by 53.53% of the members here (since unregistered peeps can't vote).
That's astounding! Other than DateBk5, I can't think of one SINGLE program that's so universally loved!
I was also surprised that LX is 2nd! I was kindof expecting MegaLauncher to be . . . and I also had no clue that THAT MANY people still used YiShow.

i started with Launcher III and used that for years. then it stopped working on when i upgraded to the next palm handheld (i think it was the 1st IIIc!) and i was sad. i tried out SilverScreen (and hated it) at the time i thought those were the only 2 out there, so i stuck with the tride and true Palm launcher, it's not THAT bad, but i liked LIII better. (i even keeped it on my handheld so i could beem it to people who i knew it would run on!) then LIII finaly updated and i used that on my IIIc, and both Clié's. then about 6 months ago, a freind showed me LauncherX and i said woah, beam it to me! just tonight i found ZLauncher (it's actualy how i found this site!) and i get to do the same for my friend tomarow

Right. Sorry for being sarcastic. Hopefully Sony will listen and get serious with it.
Sony can do amazing things. It's just frustrating to see something that a lot of people like to have and have been talking about it. Then, they managed to make something else and ended up other company capturing the opportunity. iQue3600 (http://www.garmin.com/products/iQue3600/) is one example.

GoBar was good in its day, but that day has passed. I bought GoBar for my Palm IIIx (years ago) and was pleased with it. After Aladdin bought it from DigiVello, they updated it only once (or twice) mainly to rebrand it, it would not work on my m505 (OS 4). Emails to Aladdin produced no satisfactory answer.

Well I gave ZL a try, and, call me crazy (if you must), but I have to go back to YiShow. Like so many other posts, I guess I'll just have to swallow my launcher with some of that there med-duh-ca-shun, 'cuz YiShow will never show the numbers that ZL does. With most every PalmOS title out there having a free trial period, you cannot argue with numbers. I might be missing something here, but I guess I'm just used to the interface and have grown comfortable with YiShow. (Linux users insert Irony joke here)

Thanks for the reviews. I have a lot of reading to do now to catch up with you guys on ZL fever.
Just downloaded it last night and am playing around with it this morning. Still scratching my head in trying to figure out how to make the category tab un-texted (just showing the icons) and across the top like what I have in my ML 4.3 (http://www.cliesource.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=408&papass=&sort=1&thecat=500).
Tanker Bob, nice background of Yosemite Falls?

Yosemite Falls, indeed! One of my favorite spots in the world.
To lose the tab text, go to Tab/Tab Properties and check Hide caption on each tab you want so configured. To get them across the top, go to Options/ZL Preferences and select top from the pull down box labeled Tab Mode at the top of the screen.
Got it. Thanks!
Yosemite is also one of my favorite spots in the world. I sat on where the water falls comes out once when there was no water (October), to see a nice view of the valley. Another spectacular view of the valley is from the top of Half Dome. A little reward I got after sweating on the cables to get up there.

Yosemite is also one of my favorite spots in the world. I sat on where the water falls comes out once when there was no water (October), to see a nice view of the valley. Another spectacular view of the valley is from the top of Half Dome. A little reward I got after sweating on the cables to get up there.
Did you go up the mist trail? I did that some years ago after a really wet winter. It was more like the torrential downpour trail that year! Did you go down the cables face first? That was a real kick staring almost straight down at the saddle point!
I created some 320x320 jpg Half Dome backgrounds. If you PM me your email address, I'll send them to you.

Yap, can't miss that. It was slippery & muddy from what I remember.

That too. I did upseiling once with face away from the wall (Australian style) in Blue mountain and got similar rush as I see the ground coming toward me.
Learning rock climbing now after seeing those tiny specks of climbers crawling on the El Capitan face. That face was so huge, I couldn't see the climbers until I use binocullars.

Zlauncher is definitely the best out there, but I think that the idea behind facer/today of giving you the "to do´s" and stuff in the main page is very good and loyal to the basic PDA concept.

Can anyone give advise how ZLauncher is better than ML 4.3?
I can easily change the application icon to my own images. Can the zlauncher do that?
Thanks.

I still feel that the default skin of ZL is a bit childish or maybe I should say it's don't suit to my taste...Especially the icons--can I change it easily?
A bit tired of waiting for ML4.4.

Themes are simple to change using ZL's built-in Theme Manager. Just download and load a different theme. I use CopperDeckII, but there are a large variety available.

You may want to read my previously mentioned review here (http://www.pdaavenue.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=27636#post27636). ZL has a host of features unmatched by ML. It does not, however, in itself allow you to change app icons to your own images. Most folks that wish to do so use Appicon to do that.

I tried LX and then ZL, but now LX. 'Cause I'm using a Clie SJ30. LX works better than ZL, at least to me.

I'd love to vote on this poll. BUt I don't even have a launcher. booo. I STILL don't know which one to choose, and I was hoping for a free one... until I get used to what I like or dislike about and move on...
Try ZL for 30-day free trial. Then try the others for similar free trials. So you'll get a few months to make up your mind. Also CRSLauncher is free.

DanT -
Many thanks for your post. I think you're right, I need to download some free trials. however, in my humble research, I'm still trying to figure out if launcher is what I need. ( yeah, I'm THAT slow)
I just want something that will let me define a custom start up screen, with the logo of my freelance business. I'm not sure a launcher will do that, as all the screen shots that I see for them are shots of palm os UI customization or something...
I'm still researching what I need ... that's why I'm not downloading free trials yet.
I found some stuff but they were for pc, not for mac.
I'm so surprised at the lack of mac support for SJ-33.
Oh wait. I'm getting off topic. Sorry.
< back to custom start up screen research >
ZL would easily let you use your .JEG as the background if you put it in the following MS directory: /Palm/Programs/ZLauncher/BackImage. It converts the .jpeg to .prc once you go to ZL Theme Manager and select the .jpg. ZL made it sooo easy for us.
I got a 37KB .jpeg 320x320 picture from Tanker_Bob. I did the above in the first few minutes learning how to use ZL a couple days ago, like you see below.

Ok, so is taht the only way to define a custom start up?
by having a launcher?
isa6ella
09-17-2003, 02:08 PM
that looks more like a backgroudn to me, than a custom screen
(this is why I'm getting mulitple confusion from multiple websites' info).
I just want the logo to appear for a few seconds until the PDA LCD displays the main menu...
Oh well, sorry for my ignorant about 'custom startup'. Yap that is just a background image. You're way beyond my league as far as making custom startup splash.

DanT - I am so grateful for your help, believe me.
I'm very new to this whole PDA thing, as the sj-33 has been the only model to tempt me and my wallet in equal amounts, so I still have a lot to learn.
half the time, I'm not sure if I'm even phrasing the questions right!
So - thanks for your help - REALLY.
No problemo ;)
PM Bandit about the custom startup splash thing. I notice he has that built-in in his ZL skin whenever I launch ZL (by tapping the Home/App icon in the top-left of the graffiti area), his logo splash on the screen for about a second while the skin loading.

Some security programs will let you pop up a custom image when turning on the device. I also think that Today can be set to come up when turning on a device, but it doesn't go away automatically.

There is an app called Open Logo Hack that allows you to define a splash startup screen. You will also need a hack manager. I don't have a link off hand, but if I find it I'll post it here.
Here's the link:

Only 9.63% of 623 user for ML? How can that be? 4th position?
Behind ZL and Yishow I can understand as diff user got diff taste. But how can LX got more user than ML???

Probably because LX was around longer. I forget it's original name and there were a lot of promises made as the next generation super launcher. Consequently, it had a large following.

it was Launcher III, if I remember correctly. Launcher X is still an outstanding launcher for those of who don't want all the "stuff" that comes with ZL.
Tried ZL at least 10 times and even bought a license since everyone kept raving about it.
Spend several hours playing with it and still came to the conclusion that LX is a better fit for me.
I don't spend a huge amount of time staring at my CLie each day. Just want to get in, get the info I need and get on with what I need to do. Maybe if I spent a lot of hours with the Clie on I would be more drawn to a lot of graphic entertainment.
Then you don't need 3rd party launcher at all, just stick with the default launcher, safe your money and 500-1500KB RAM.

It was Launcher III. I was a user of it back in my palm III days. It was much better than the old palm launcher. And now since I had already been using launcher, i got the upgrade to LX. I am very happy w/it. It does what I want so I use it.

I got the same feeling too. Maybe get used to it since I start using Palm when ML is version 2.xx.:)
Has anyone mentioned how zippy-dee-doo-duh zippy-dee-yeah the ZL3.61+ is? It beats my ML4.3.
