Now that the CF driver is almost released I think it's time to pick one up (besides I just got outbid for a 512 MSPro). I don't have much experience w/CF cards so forgive me if this is a stupid question.

I noticed that CF cards come with different speeds (30x, 40x ect...). What is the fastest speed the NX70 can handle or does it not matter? I want to get the fastest one possible but don't want to waste money.

Thanks

There are still no comercially available drivers, perhaps the beta will be released pretty soon.

Ganz, the more appropo question might be: do these CF cards which claim to be 30x and 40x actually perform at those speeds? You might want to do some reading on the digital camera sites where folks have been using CF cards for years. I remember reading some reviews a while ago on http://www.dpreview.com and http://www.imaging-resource.com/ which discussed this issue. At the time when I was paying attention to this stuff, very few cards really performed at the speeds advertised. I have a 12x card and don't notice any difference to my regular CF cards.

But times have changed (oh 6 months) and maybe they do go faster. I'd like to hear that they do go faster. Let us know!

A few charts published recently shows a variation more in brand than commercial hype. In a real world situation it's hard to say, results are mixed and can actually vary from card to card from the same manufacturer.

How do you see a crow fly at midnight? Under a full moon maybe?

I'm intersted too! As noted above DPReview may be a good resource. Here's a link to the appropriate forum:

Now that I've learned how to rip movies to my Clie, I cant wait for a CF cards. Getting back to the original question, will it matter what speed CF card is used if we are loading MP2's or MP3's on our Clie o0r as n2ifp stated will it be more important to use a particular company, and if so which company. Since Sandisk created the format, does it mean they make the best cards?

Not necessarily, in fact Sandisk might be the sloweset. There is a link somewhere in these threads that had a link comparing the various CF cards.

Here are two reports about CF card performance and about CF cards in general. These should give plenty of information.

There is info about card write and read speeds at the bottom of this link. http://www.dpreview.com/articles/mediacompare/

Those are great links, Thanks. Ive got alot of reading to do before the CF drivers are available. The first question that comes to minds is does the NX70 hold a type 1 or typw 2 CF card?

Sony says it's a standard CF Type II slot.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought a CF Type II slot can accept both Type I and II CF cards.

Regarding digital cameras, most will accept both types of cards, the older cameras accepting the older CF 1 format. I dont know about Clies.

Just how much thickness difference is there between type I and Type II? There's several tempting Type I cards on sale out there but wondering how big a gap in the slot a Type I card would leave in the NX?

Type 1 is 3.3mm thick while type 2 is 5 mm thick

Thanks. I think 1.5mm gap will drive me nuts. :(

Yes, I have issues.
