View Full Version : Nothing has really replaced T3 in Palm lineup

I think the T3 has never really been replaced. There is nothing that has all of these at once:

1-Can be "compact" (slider)
2-Has a full screen (320 x 480)
3-Has a voice recorder (add par-PRO for great recordings)
4-Has a 400 MHz processor

-Life drive and TX not "compact"
-TX lacks a voice recorder
-TX processor < 400 MHz
-Treo lacks a full screen and processor < 400 MHz (save on battery I'm sure).

For this reason I just bought another T3 on Ebay - a new and unopened one for less than $200. I will use my current one until it dies and then go to the 2nd.

A slider-Treo might tempt me.
A TX with a recorder might also.
LifeDrive too thick for me.

What do you think? What has replaced the T3?????

The Sony VGN-UX180 is my replacement for my T3 (when it dies) :)

I think the Tungsten C has never been replaced :D

- Wireless adapter
- good battery
- thumbboard
- no NVFS

I still use my T|T3, and I am quite fond of it. But the TX or the LifeDrive is still very tempting, especually since the battery life on the T3 is horrid.

Who needs a T3 replacement? The T3 is great as it is

Yes I agree that the T3 is one of the best handheld ever produced. There are some mods and software that can address the problem regarding the battery and the occassional but inevitable digitizer drift.

The LifeDrive has all the features plus better. It has a built-in WiFi and a massive storage. On the other end the T3 is a lot more responsive and has a vibrating alarm which LifeDrive does not have.

Maybe the end for PDA is coming it's been almost a year now since the release of the Tx and Z22 upto now even PPC PDA manufacterers are focusing their attention on building Smartphones.

I've owned 4 T3's and I've never had a digitizer problem. Moreover, getting the 1100mAh battery installed and using fullpower and also getting either a battery extender using 4 2650 mAh AA batteries or using the Power To Go sled, there's never a problem with battery life, especially if you avoid wifi and use BT to connect via a phone.

I moved from a T3 to a TX and after a few software tweaks - the TX surpases the T3 IMHO. The tweaks are WarpSpeed (to overclock the TX to 416 Mhz) because I missed how zippy my T3 was and unCache and Off Flush to fix the NVFS issues so that apps (esp. Blazer) open quicker.

The constant large full screen (I used to open up my T3 all the time anyway); built in WiFi (let's face it using the WiFi card is a pain in the arse and you can't download to the card while using the WiFi card) I use WiFi a lot to surf and check weather, email, traffic; battery life is soooo much better; and I can use a 4GB SDcard (the max for the T3 is 2GB). Plus the TX is only slightly longer than the T3 but it is also thinner than the T3.

While I appreciate that the T3 is a great PDA especially right out of the box... Once the TX gets a little help from software developers like Dmitry - nothing really beats it IMHO. :)

But, still, the TX lacks a voice recorder. Put one in the TX and I might get it. The constant large screen is nice. Where does one buy a higher capacity battery for the T3? I have no problem installing it. My T3 had sustained dents on the front and the back and I took it apart completely and straightened out the case and then reassembled it. My wife was impressed (aghast?) but I suspect many of you on this forum have done something similar.

Yeah, I agree with most of you, the T3 is in a class of its own. I felt the same about the huge sucking sound when my wifi card was in, but I have added a bluetooth access point to my wifi network and just do the same thing only via BT. I don't surf the web much using it but update portfolio numbers and do email. Good enough for me. The voice recorder is a must for me and I have to say that I like the slider. My slider is still firm, battery life is fine (with full power) and I like the compact nature. Metal beats plastic no matter what.

Digitizer drift is not inevitable

Go to ebay and type in this # in the search box:

I am using these 1100mAh batteries on two T3. Both are working fine.

Cool, thanks. Any heat issues?

None. I'm thinking about switching connectors on my 1200mAh form the NR70 and putting it in the T3, but I don't know if it'll fit. It's much bigger.

The voice recorder isn't such a big deal for me. I really like my T|T3, and it works great, so therefore it's hard to justify getting a new TX or Lifedrive. Plus I own a Treo 700p, so that also adds to the mix.

Now Palm would have a winner if they brought back the T3 with 128 megs of regular ram and WiFi. Some of us really like the slider since it makes the unit much more pocketable.

Romeol

Well. . . not really a winner because you'd get like 2 minutes of battery life. They'd have to make it a bit bigger and add upwards of a 3000mAh battery.

Yeah, I heart my T3 as well. It just looks so much sexier than my porky Treo, but even devices with NVFS are a lot better now, and if taken care of properly, FrankenGarnet can be tamed! :)

If Palm went nuts and built a device that was slightly thicker than the T3, slides up to reveal a QWERTY keyboard, is a smartphone, has like 128mb of RAM and 2gb of ROM, one of those new XScale processors at up to 500mhz or so with dynamic clocking, ultra-thin removable zinc-whatever battery (that new cool one), quad-band GSM, dual-band UMTS, HSPDA, PalmOS like version 7 or whatever (afterall, OS6 died ;) ), is backwards compatible with Universal Connector and Athena port accessories via adapters, has BT3.0, WiBro, and...

Oh sorry, started daydreaming. What was the topic again? :p

It really is sounding like you want a Sony VGN-UX180! Well, except for the price tag! But all the same, it would be nice to have the UX180 because you can use real (somewhat standard) apps, i.e. instead of tranferring databases to MobileDatabase (and losing features), you could just run SQL server on the UX180! Or, Photoshop, etc.
