Maybe the Nutcase Club could apply for some sort of Endangered status since we're losing a couple and worldwide there's not that many of us! That way it will keep the price of the TH55's up and those of us who have at least 2 wouldn't be able to sell, since we'd then be protected.

Anyway, why not chuck a couple of TG's or that UX?

Oh, you're right. I forgot to remove the two TG50s and one UX50 from the list in my signature. I am rectifying it right now. I am sort of clearing out my "inventory". Trying to get back to a more rational relationship with PDAs ... :o

Stumbled upon this thread of mine...

at the time I wrote: am trying to get back to a more rational relationship with PDAs ...

OK, now I have 3 TH55 and 2 UX50. That's not counting my two TX and an occasional T3. Let's forget about that rational bull****. Take me in. :D

:D

Don't get me started with that either. I have 18 working TH55s, 8 of them are TH55/E1s, ready to sell. Lost count on the broken ones for parts, I think they are about 50 or so, LOL.

There are piles of other CLIEs for parts. However, if anyone is interested in buying a good working CLIE, other than one of the above TH55s, I have the following CLIEs ready to sell: 3 UX50s, 1 SL10, 1 NX73V, 1 NX70V, 1 NZ90, 1 TJ35/E1, 1 TJ27/U, 1 TJ25/U, 1 T415.

From $225 to $400, depending on the condition and with or without Bluetooth. Each TH55 includes: retractable stylus, wrist strap PEGA-AC10 charger, Wallet-size Graffitti 2 Reference Card, USB-miniUSB hotsync cable, CLIE-charger-mini female USB adaptor, retractable CLIE-USB adapter (extra one for jumpdrive), Installation CD-ROM version 1.0, Read This First manual, Quick Reference Sheet, Safety & Regulations Guide, Internet Connection Guide, Note on CLIE Migration Tool, Note on Communication speed of the wireless LAN function, Important Safety Notes about Li-Ion Batteries, List of Optional Accesories, Limited Warranty Statements, Customer Registration for the Personal Entertainment Organizer, End-User License Agreement for Sony Software, Notes on CLIE Organizer for PC and CLIE Organizer, Note on the LCD on your CLIE handheld, Notes on DataViz Documents To Go Professional Edition 6.0 eligibility, Intellisync Upgrade guide, Note on using a Screen Protector, all in the original box.

I give 90-day warranty from the time of purchase. If it breaks, not due to your own fault, just return it to me and I will repair it for free parts and labor within that 90-day warranty. If it breaks after the warranty ends, I can repair it cheaper than any one or I will match the repair cost if you can find one company that can do cheaper than me.

Lithium-Ion battery usually only last for about 2 years. I'll put a new battery and verify the battery performance with Battery TIME 1.84. The test report will be in the MemoPad with discharge test under a full brightness is guarranteed to be over T:04:00:00.

I am still using a TH55/U everyday at work since February 2004. Everything is still functioning flawlessly. The only thing I did to it was replacing the battery last year. That shows the TH55 quality of workmanship is one of the best in the PDA world to date. Unfortunately Sony is no longer make them. These TH55s are becoming collector items and hold their price well.

Some of the features I like about TH55:

1. The flipcover is tinted but see through. You can read eBook at night through the flipcover without the need to flip it up or fumbling with the dimmer because the screen is so bright in a dark room. Speaking of bright screen, I often use it as flashlight (torch) when I get out of bed in the middle of the night. You still can access the 4 hard buttons with the flipcover closed. Very slick design!

2. The Voice Rec button allows you to power on and record voice with just one button press. Very easy and quick for making voice notes, reminder, etc. when you are on the go. No need to stop in the middle of a rush, fiddling and fumbling with stylus just to jot down a reminder, when you can just switch the button and talk. Very cool! The other day I was in a rush to board an airplane, so I parked my car in the airport parking and ran to the check-in counter. To be sure that I'll remember where I parked, I just pulled my TH55 out of my pocket, switched on the Voice Rec button and recorded my parking spot.

2. HOLD button allows you to disable the touchscreen and all hard buttons, so you can safely put this PDA naked in your pocket without worrying that it will turn on accidentally. I use this feature a lot especially while listening to the TH55's MP3 player.

3. Lens cover button allows you to power on, open the Camera lens, and activate the CLIE Camera application with just one button press. To take a picture, you can either use the CAPTURE hard button, located between the lens cover button and phone jack, or use the soft button on the touch screen. You can turn it to landscape position and position the CAPTURE button on top and take picture while the flipcover is closed, just like a typical Sony Cyber-shot digitial camera. Another cool design.

4. Yet another unique feature of TH55 is the jodial on the back that makes one-handed operation very natural. You can have a sandwich on one hand while reading eBook on the TH55 with the other hand by using the jogwheel to scroll down the line or left/right buttons to page up/dowm, respectively.

Speaking of ebook, I even put a dictionary in MS to look up words in my TH55. No more paper dictionary for me. TH55 is my portable dictionary and is used for many other purposes besides the PIM, e.g., eBooks, Bible, programmable calculator, GPS maps reader, voice recorder, MP3 player, camera, picture viewer, movie viewer, storing and carrying important documents in native forms (for Excel, Word, PDF, zip, etc.), all in one slim pocketable device.

5. Sony Digital Signal Processor (DSP) runs the MP3 independently from the CPU so you can listen to MP3 in the background, while doing your homework on DocumentsToGo or reading your eBook. You can listen the MP3 with the built-in speaker as well as with earphone via audio jack. It works perfectly with my Sony Noise Cancelling Headphones MDR-NC11A while I'm in the airplane or mowing the lawn. Not too many PDAs that can do such multitasking.

6. The CPU is known as Sony Handheld Engine (HHE) that varies the processing speed from 8 MHz for simple task like PIM to 123 MHz for more challenging task like Excel or games. That is why the power usage is very low and the frequency between battery charge last a long time. I can go for a weekend camping trip or a 10 to 24-hour flight-trip to Europe or Asia without worrying about running out of battery as I would with the laptop.

7. 32MB RAM is plenty big for me to fit all of my 100 applications and utilities.

I am not big into CLIE Organizer and like the simple Palm PIM, but a lot of people with media-centric like the CLIE Organizer. They can attach pictures, notes, and sounds into their PIM. Having the DateBook, Address, ToDoList, FreeNotes, MemoPad, Viewer, Reference, and Application tabs on the right side of the CLIE Organizer make the PIM manipulation very handy. I do use the FreeNotes a lot when I want to just sketch or do a handwriting note without Graffitti.

8. Speaking of Graffitti writing, however, I give a lot of credits to this latest Sony CLIE semi-flexing digitizer. It is very precise and good feel on the soft surface. Unlike the rigid glass surface of the other touch screens that can lead to scratching. You just need to gently glide the stylus tip on the surface. A year ago I decided to do without screen protector (as screen protector could reduce the sensitivity of graffitti writing and digispoke problem that people talk about when a dust got trapped between the digitizer and screen protector) and I have yet to see a scratch on my screen (knock on wood).

The 4th (bottom-right) button assigned to CLIE organizer Search popup window is also very handy. If you don't use it, don't worry, you can re-map it to launch other function by a TH55 specific utility freeware like THe Go! Go! That is what I do. I assign AudioPlayer to it as I like to listen to MP3 in the background while reading eBook or working with Excel.

9. The MemoryStick slot can take up to 2GB MS Pro and it has DOOR to keep dust away from entering the slot. 2GB is plenty storage capacity for me. I can put 48-hour long MP3s in such MS. The MS door also stops those accidental pressing and launching off the MS as I've seen in older CLIEs.

If you are into movies using TCPMP, I read in 1src.com that Dmitry Grinberg, http://palmpowerups.com/, developed a Fat32 driver that can run a 4GB MS Pro in TH55. I haven't tried it myself as it supposedly doesn't work with Sony DSP apps such as AudioPlayer and MoviePlayer. Running 4GB MS Pro with TCPMP could also raise power consumption. Personally I stick with the OEM AudioPlayer and MoviePlayer.

10. The built-in NetFront 3.1 web browser is not bad. I have weblink icons as shortcuts for launching a website by just a tap, e.g., Google, whenever there is a hotspot via the built-in 802.11b WiFi (see Figure 1). You can then connect to Google, just like you would do in PC. You can create these weblink shortcuts using Sharklinks, a freeware developed by http://www.ludustech.com/.

Also the same Palm OS developer made another freeware called SharkScanDA for scanning hotspots by a flick of a finger tip over the status bar (SB) or command bar area. You can just go to, e.g., StarBucks Coffee Shop, turn on your TH55, flick on SB to pop up SharkScanDA over whatever screen display that you have currently opened and start scanning for Wireless LAN. You may be surprised to find several hotspots. Then, just sellect the free one. If only pay-as-you-go service is available, the scanner will ask you to enter the security code right on the screen. Afterwards, you can start surfing the internet. It is a really cool and very slick setup. I can include such setup in this TH55 for your convenience. You need to do nothing.

11. Figure 2 illustrates TH55 Data Import and Landscape viewing capabilities. TH55 Installation CD-ROM provides MemoryStick (SCSI) driver for your PC so you can use TH55 as a jumpdrive, up to 2GB MemoryStick. The landscape capability is a shareware utility application, developed by mobile-stream, http://www.mobile-stream.com/landscape_info.html.

A retractable 2-in-1 CLIE-USB adapter for the 2GB jumpdrive setup, hotsync and charging to PC or Laptop via USB port (a great travel adapter) is included in the TH55.

12. I also use it as a GPS for my car with PEGA-CC5, as shown in Figure 3.

If anything goes wrong with its hardware, I'll fix it. For software issues, you have many supports from other 1src members here too.

Ditto. Just to make sure that we 'TH55 nutcase' won't run out of spareparts. :)

After all, Sony didn't make them anymore. Mine is over 3.5 years old, ancient in PDA age, but it's still tickin' and haven't seen any decent replacement, yet.

Very funny, John.

Every one is still here, I think. These things just creep up slowly, under the radar so to speak, for the last 3 years. ;)

I have a SJ30 the battery time has reduced to less than 30 min (I have a replacment to put in but I'm 'affeared' :( I'll break it completely, it still works well). I upgraded to a Palm TX, it was not an upgrade. The letterrecognition ability has since ceased to be practical (a hardware problem according to 'Palm'). Though, It never took notes as well as the Clié. The TX is currently a reader only device, (spare parts).

In any case last month I put a 'Wanted' request on Ebay for a TH55 and I expect one the land from Germany at the end of next week. There are more & more on offer from Europe weekly, before that TH55 were only available from America. [While I searched] (Ireland)

I was a little concerned when some of the potential private sellers (not online shops) appeared to be selling more than one TH55. Were they selling the same one more than once? How could they all have light use or be currently unused. Now I know.

I read here at least one of you has 18, TH55. Wow! Fears allayed! I hope my incoming new secondhand Clié TH55 is at least as good as my SJ30 preferably better and that finding this site and such will keep it a practical option for some time to come.

Thank you

TH-55's were (are) the high-end of Sony's Clie line. (In my mind the VZ90 doesn't count, as it was a transistion to entertainment devices and UMPC's).

They command high resale prices and more of them are becoming available as their owners transition to smartphones and other devices...

Congratulations and good luck!

Just a note... I still view the VZ90 as the highend since entertainment has alwasy been a strong emphasis in the Clie line. (Will, Sony is an entertainment company :D )

Yet, according to an interview with a Clie developer at Sony, it was planned to be a 3 pronged strategy: The UX as the high end in communications, TH in PIM and VZ in entertainment. Too bad that layout didn't carry out well due to Sony's financial problems back then, which killed the Clie business altogether.
