View Full Version : 9 voolt battery charger ?????????
Can any one in this fourm help with this issue? I was on e-bay and noticed this item http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3018514183&category=15031 is it for really and will it work for the NX?
If so does any one have it and can they tell me which pins the 9 volt battery is using so that I may build one of these out of a 9 volt plug and the extra plug-in that came with my clie. Thanks

haus,
I think itīs real, but you wonīt be able to rebuild this one
with the connector provided with your clie!
This batterycharger has a little circuit inside the connector,
that generates stabilized 5.2V out of the incoming 9V.
Your provided connector wonīt do that.
So buy it, itīs the easier way....

Your Clie needs 5 volts to charge (well OK it needs 5.2 volts plus or minus 0.15 volts ... up to you if you want to risk being 0.05 volts out of tolerance ...). That 9 volt charger would have a 5 volt regulator in it (I'd imagine your typical 7805 linear regulator plus a couple of caps should do the trick, someone correct me if I'm wrong) ...
The harder part would be trying to get a connector ... pinouts are easy, just do a search in this forum, there are at least 3 posts with the pinouts mentioned ... I ended up going onto ebay and buying a cheap ($6USD) USB charge/sync cable ... I'll be taking mine and bringing out the USB, serial and power pins so I can hook my Clie up to various things ...
Naturally, don't even consider doing this unless you've got a reasonable electronics background and know the standard precautions and tests one performs when doing this sorta thing (make sure you're not going to zap the Clie connector, make sure first time you power anything up that you check the voltages, make sure you monitor the current draw the first time in case anything goes weird, etc).

Oh and BTW ... on some versions of the pinout, the charge pins aren't very clear ... you need to apply power to both the charge AND 5V power in pins in order to charge ... don't connect the USB VBUS or unreg out pins to 5V if you only want to charge though!

I advise against also, it could be too high a price to pay if you fry your clie.

Come to think of it, I'd probably also echo n2ifp's advice and emphasise the point I made in my first post ... don't even consider doing this unless you've got a reasonable electronics background. It is all too easy to fry things if you poke around without knowing what you're doing (or even if you do know what you're doing and don't have the right equipment or steady enough hands!) ... remember, the warranty explicitly states that damage due to incorrect voltage inputs are NOT covered.
For me, I'll be going rather overboard with protection for my clie when I build the breakout connector ... I probably won't be including optoisolators but I'll be making darn sure none of the data lines will make it over 3.6 volts or below -0.3 volts for instance (which should be well within tolerance) ...

How come when I plug my SonyBrand AC adapter into my Clie, the battery monitor says that the voltage is 10.2V. If that is true, wouldn't i be frying my Clie? ...I don't seem to have any problems though.

what does the power adapter itself say on the label?

The power adapter says 5.2V output, but my battery monitor (Battery Panel 0.02) says 10.2V when i plug in the adapter! What does that mean; what should i do?
