I have finally converted my Tungsten T5 into a GPS device using a package offered by Seidio which includes a Bluetooth GPS receiver (with SiRF III chip), a cradle, speaker and TomTom's Navigator 5.

All of the reviews I have read about this product were dead on. The installation process is a NIGHTMARE! But anyone who knows the in and out of a Palm device should ultimately be able to figure it out without needing to use TomTom's dreaded support (based entirely on hearsay as I never tried to contact them). Basically, it takes a lot of fidgeting to get it right but it can be done with some patience and some Palm know-how.

Some of the error messages you may encounter in the installation process are:

"Cannot find Palm Library Instalaide.dll"
"Cannot install Palm conduit"
"Insufficient space on external card"

Although the activation process was reported as being problematic by some, I had absolutely no difficulties activating the software on-ling through a dedicated TomTom site.

As for the hardware, cudos to Seidio. Fantastic cradle, comes with all sorts of charging cables (no extra costs) and the GPS receiver is great. Locks on within 60 seconds or less. Device sits in my glove compartment and communiates via BT to the T5. Worked like a charm. Oh...and GPS positioning on the Palm is instantaneous without any delays whatsoever. Not sure if this is because of the SiRF III chip in the receiver or something else. I've heard other complaints about delays and I experienced absolutely none.

As for the software, cudos to TomTom. This software (once installed) is simply amazing. Easy to use, great graphics and the 3D mode is very very cool.

It is really no wonder that Palm opted to offer GPS packages from its website bundled with the TomTom software. It is outstanding.

For those interested in the seidio package which I purchased (and which is the same for the TX) here is the url:

Hope this was helpful. :D
