Bottom left of the grafitti area, in the corner under the menu "button" is a circle that's half white and half black. That's the contrast control. Tap that and adjust to your heart's content. It may or may not help visibility with the backlight off, but it should.....

umm not for the SJ30, the brightness control is the only thing that exists. W/o the backlight, the SJ30 is more or less useless.

So thats it? No way to control the contrast on th SJ-30? Any Hack for that? Kinda sucks, you have to have the back-light on all the time and the battery won't last more than a day and a half...PLEASE ANY HACK!!!!

Take the brightness down to 25% or around that area. I can get my SJ30 to last about three days on a single charge with about an hour and a half of use each day. It is still very readable at that level. Anything less will make the display look M505 like.

canalla, the SJ30 is really not meant to be used w/o the backlight. It it however very usable even with the backlight strength as low as 15% to 30%.
If you are using the handheld with 100% backlight strength, it might be why it is only lasting a day and a half. How much do you use each day?
Other thing is that if you're not using it much each day and it still is only lasting a short amount of time, it might be a bad battery.
