HELP!!!

Just traded in my sony clie nx70v for the nz-90. I made sure to backup my ram onto a memory stick, and to hotsync with both of my computers. I brought home the nz-90, charged for 4 hours and the nightmare began. I tried to restore the memory from MS backup got this error "Discordance of the device- The backup set that you selected is not the backup data of this device", so now I can't place all my vital data on the new machine. I didn't panic initially. Proceeded to load the Palm Desk top software on my computer and after a successful load, tried to hotsync hoping that this would restore my data and got the following message:

HotSync operation started 04/20/03 22:38:56
HotSync Error:
An application failed to respond to a
HotSync notification. Please check the Palm Desktop for details. (8009)
HotSync operation complete 04/20/03 22:38:56

I further looked at the log and it said: "An application on the PC failed to respond to a confirmation query. This application may need to be restarted"

The computer definitely recognized that I was trying to hotsync via the cradle/ usb port, but it stopped the hotsync immediately after I chose the USER NAME.

If anybody has any idea what this is about I would certainly appreciate any advice as right now I have a fancy $800 device that I would need to retype ALL my info on and that would SU**!!

Thanks to anybody that responds.

Hard reset the NZ and make sure you use the same exact Hotsync name as your NX.
Worked fine for me when I did my transfer...
There is a way to get the MS backup to work on a different machine. It was recently posted in this forum. I think it involved some shenanigans. HAppy searching!!!

yes, the built-in backup dors not like to backup one device vtype and restore to another...

sounds like your attempt at a restore goofed uo the username.. hard reset thr nz and try again...

restoring all files from another device is usually dangerous... the preferences file alone can wreak havoc.... if you don't know what a preferences file is... then you (with all due respect) have no business trying what you did...

i would get all the data on the palm desktop, and hotsync it to a freshly hard reset device..

in response to GREG,

Your point is well taken, but let me assure you that I have been around the block before. When I traded my NR70V for the NX70V, I was easily able to fully restore my data base via a simple hotsync and this involved what I consider a complex process of compatibility OS4 to OS5.

Thanks for your suggestion, I tried a hard reset but no luck. So far it appears that I might be missing a driver on the PC side and it maybe it isn't my NZ-90 that is screwing up. I did try to fully reinstall the Palm Desktop software but even though this part was successful, the hotsync immediately stops after I choose the user name (same as on the old NX70V)

i was under the impression that you had a backup on the clie on your memory stick, not a backup on the pc.... if you restore the preferences file from a different device... it's as i said...

but you now responded about restoring from hotsync... that's different, and a better way, as i suggested..

i would save your palm databases somehow... you should archive them to files (we are on the pc now)... then wipe out all hotsync and palm desktop software (using control panel remove programs)

now do a clean install of the desktop, and hard reset the nz, and try to sync... if you still have trouble, then you have a usb driver issue or (and this is what is sounds like) some crap left in your registry that is mucking up the desktop / hotsync.... work on this until you get to hotsync, and set a user name...

when this is working, then import the archived data files, and hotsync...

this should be a safe way to proceed, and will not waste your time with data, when your problem is much more fundamental...

regards,

greg

Greg,
Thankyou for your informative solution. I actually got very lucky. I used my computer at work, where after a small bit of advice from sony support on how to have the nz-90 recognized by the usb port, it magically fully restored my information fully. At this point I will tinker with my home computer, or I could simply erase the palm desktop program via control panel. Then all I need to do is run the desktop for nz-90, hotsync and have all the new info placed from the nz-90 into my home computer.

Thankyou for taking the time to make your recommendations, I will use them in the future if I have a similar problem.
