Just got my TX and want to get a clean start with it. Bunch o' newbie questions:

How do I perform a clean upgrade from Palm desktop 4.01, with a Vx (yup, checked it out from the Smithsonian ;) From reading the Treo board I understand that just synching one's old data doesn't work reliably.

What quirks, bugs, and traps exist to not fall into? I've read that if you press firmly on the digitizer it wears out (drifts) faster. Didn't know that!

What to replace Versamail with (Treo folks hate it, yeah this is not a Treo, but the OS is mostly the same).

Best browser? The TX will be my backup when the pc goes in for repair later this week.

Best portable keyboard? Has anyone used the laser kb - you type over a virtual kb projected in front of the pda.

thanks folks!

SnapperMail has never failed me, it works very well.

Blazer works fine for most things or you could try NetFront for browsing.

There are no good browser solutions. Blazer is slow as molasses, but has the features I want most, NetFront is peppy but is a very basic browser, Opera Mini is between the two of them in terms of speed vs features. If you can deal with the speed issues, I'd say just stick with Blazer.

You didn't mention these, but you will probably want the following apps:

ButtonEx: Lets you customize ALL the buttons on your TX including the Home hard button. (http://www.freewarepalm.com/utilities/buttonsex.shtml)

txhmbtn.zip: Lets you put the home buttom back on the palm status bar. (http://www.mobile-stream.com/demos/txhmbtn.zip)

Upgrade directions (http://forum.brighthand.com/showthread.php?t=220374), warnings and links included. Be extremely careful and do plenty of homework first if you intend to play with hacks and clockers.

Enjoy your TX.

Dumb question re upgrade step 4:

Does this mean I must upgrade by synching the old PDA with a new, blank install of P. Desktop? (Yeah that's implied in the post, but I want to be more than sure).

~ Should I rename the old Palm directory on the PC and delete the Palm key in the PC Registry?
~ If I need to upgrade from a dead/missing device, can I just import the data from the old PIM apps?
~ By renaming the palm....\backup folder, does that prevent the old, incompatible apps from loading?
~ Should I buy and install NeatFreak pack before doing anything else?

Thanks for your patience with my detailed questions

You need to install the CD that came with the TX.
No need to rename the Palm folder, just rename the Backup folder inside your user name folder. That will prevent all third party apps (mostly old) to make conflicts.

You can then go to the developerīs page of your favorite apps and look for updates.
NeatFreak pack may be a good choice, itīs not indispensable but might be very useful.

I to am switching to a TX from a Vx (IBM WorkPad c3) using OS 4.1.

I have read all the upgrade details and would rather do a complete fresh install as there is no vital data that I want to carry over. Some old games is the only thing I will loose.

Know here is the question.

After a fresh install of Palm Desktop (V 4.1.4 )for the TX can I then still use it for the Vx. or should I say, will Desktop 4.1.4 recognize the Vx (on a serial port)

Yes it should. All older models should work. Just enable Local Serial in the HotSync Manager. You may eventually need to change the COM port in the Configuration of HS Manager.

In the upgrade directions linked to above, there's mention of "repairing permissions" via /Applications/Utilites/Disk Utility *before* upgrading the desktop app. I'm poking around on the install CD and don't see anything like that.
I would rather take the extra 5 min now to do it right. What's 'repair permissions' and how/when do I do that?

Edit: After a search on 'repair permissions' it looks like this can only be done after the new P Desktop is installed, and may only apply to MacOS.
