There is a great thread currently about favorite freeware apps. Let's face it, if we can get a top-notch program for free, why not?

Yet many of us also buy shareware apps which we really think are superb. I'll open this thread by mentioning of few that I bought because I thought they offered me benefits above & beyond what I could get with freeware. All programs I list have shown me that they have prompt, excellent support.

CardBackup (www.jkware.com), $11.95- Backs up all programs & databases to expansion card. Can work even with mounting programs. Pre-programmed scheduling. All of this means that you can always have *on* you (not just on your PC at home) a backup you can use to reinstall all or some of your programs. The Clie comes with a backup program of its own but it does not do a selective restore & has no scheduling feature.

Breakout (www.kickoo.com)- $12.50- This is a fantastic fast action game with the most spectacular graphics & super sound. It is *the* reason I moved from a Palm to a hi-res Clie. You basically have to compare this to the Astraware equivalent, Ricochet, to see what I mean -- it's a treat for the eyes, ears, mind & nimble of hand!

PiDirect (www.pitech.com), $29.95 [yes, it's too expensive & won't work with OS5...but]- If you intend to remain with an OS4 device for any period of time, this program allows you to run both programs AND databases off expansion cards *without moving them to RAM*. Translation: you can access huge dictionary databases without having to have enormous free space on your handheld. This is the program that allowed me to use my 128 MB MS to its fullest advantage.

OK, that's a start. Now it's your turn!

Ummm... if it's not freeware, then it's shareware (99.9% of the time). There are a ton of threads on people's favorite apps. Here are a few:

Apps you can't live without (http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10438&highlight=favorite+apps)
Must have applications! (http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9759&highlight=favorite+apps)

Herbzilla ... please don't stand in the way of people trying to start new threads to obtain other peoples opinions on a subject.

You tried to do it early on in my Favorite Freeware Apps thread ... and look how many people added to my thread and viewed it since you posted your message.

My thread has become one of the highest viewed threads in this forum, and I am certain it is helping many new and existing Clie owners find great software for their PDA's. It definitely did for me.

These types of "share your opinions" threads are very helpful to all of us... so let them get started ... and let them grow and grow!!! To me ... they are the most useful threads available.

Share good information whenever you can, and as often as you can !!!! Everyone will benefit from it !!!

Don't get me wrong. I'm certainly not trying to stand in the way people sharing their opinoins. I agree that these are some of the best threads. That's precisely why I like to point out some of the great existing threads (i.e., to "share good information").

However, I'd like to see the existing threads "grow and grow" first before new ones are started. Then, when people started a new one, it would be great if they referred to the old one as a starting point, and then added NEW info in the current one. That way we could limit the duplication, and have a great string of threads on a topic. This is especially important with the new thread limits.

I'd love for people to add some great NEW apps to this thread so we can all benefit from their knowledge and experience. However, what I hope I don't see is a bunch of people posting DateBk5, ShadowPlan, Agendus, ZLauncher, etc. Most of us already know those are great apps. If you don't, then a search of the theads will tell you that. And if you're new and didn't think about searching, I posted links above to make it easy for you to find out that info.

I swear I'm trying to be helpful and not stop the sharing of good info. However, it's been a rough weekend and I'm kinda tired, so I apologize if this is coming off in the wrong tone. :)

Check the number of posts I have made so far in this forum. I'm relatively new to ClieSource.

If hherbzilla's point in answering my thread was discourage participation on this site & in this forum by any new member, he is most assuredly succeeding. I'll certainly think twice about beginning or answering a thread.

Thanks for realizing that fact, RD100.

I got your point. Yeah it sounded rather critical at first.

I got an app that gets little pub.
"Bluemoon" http://www.sgsw.com/BlueMoon/bluemoon.html
For repeating tasks, while keeping a history it is one sweet app. Very unique functionality. Yet something anyone could use.

First let me get hherbzilla's obvious list out of the way. I won't get into them because everyone obviously knows these are cool apps:
Datebk5
ZLauncher
Bonsai
super names
iSilo
PalmReader

Now here are a few of my faves that are not so obvious:

mySchedule MLB 2003 and NFL 2003
Schedules for all teams sorted by date (MLB2003 has a view where you can view all the days games) and team. Rosters also included.

Jot 2.0
Why wait for Graffiti 2 when you can buy it for your current device today? Better symbols that graffiti (closer to handwriting anyway) and you can write where ever you want on the screen.

IconManager
Hi-res icon editor and manager for Datebk5 and Handyshopper.

OK .... I have lived the dream !!!!

Here is my current favorite shareware app ....

Pocket TV Browser - http://www.pimcity.com/welcome.htm

I tried it ... I LOVE IT .... and it's only $9.95 !!!

A TV guide you download into your PDA !!!

You can download up to 14 days, and select different levels of detail and different sets of channels, specific to the area you live in.

Then you can view the data in a ton of different ways !!!

The Shareware version has a 14 day trial.

AND .... HERE'S AN UPDATE :D :D :D

A fantastic addition ... <no wait> ... let me repeat this ...

A FANTASTIC ADDITION ....

to the Pocket TV Browser .... is The TV Grid Listings by NJ .... which can be downloaded here:

TV Grid Listings Download Site (http://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=1&jid=218CC8C41A2C194E967XEA47D4BA5BE7&platformId=1&productType=2&catalog=0&sectionId=0&productId=46260)

TV Grid Listings uses the Pocket TV Browser database as input.

YOU MUST TRY BOTH OF THESE !!!!!!

RD110,

Your posting about Pocket TV Browser led me to believe that it only cost $9.95. I may be mistaken, but it seems that one must pay an additional $10 for the TV grid app.

For $20 I'll pass but for $10 I'd try it out.

Did I misinterpret what I read on these two sites?

The Pocket TV Browser costs $9.95.

The Add-On TV Grid app costs another $9.95

So the total is $20 if you want both.

But you can use the Pocket TV Browser without the TV Grid app.

The TV Grid add-on app just gives you another way to view the data loaded by Pocket TV Browser ... in the standard TV grid format like you find on TV Guide websites. Without the TV Grid app, you can view the data in view which looks more like a "book" format.

You should definitely try both of these for the 14 day trial demo before deciding the $20 is too much.

This is definitely one of the most useful applications I have on my PDA right now! :)

It lets me see every TV program from every channel that will be on for the next 14 days (listed alphabetically), and then with just a few clicks, it will automatically add the shows I select into my Palm DateBook as reminders. It will even trigger my DateBook to set off an alarm shortly before the shows begin.

I am not a "big" TV viewer, so this type of app lets me know only when the shows I really want to watch will be on, so I can plan around it. Now all the shows I might want to watch for the next two weeks are all in my DateBook!

It also helps me to know about shows which I didn't realize are still showing on certain channels (like The Family Guy). I thought this show was no longer aired, but now I know it is on at 11:30pm every night.

I also know well in advance when my favorite movies will air... like all 5 Rocky movies (I thru V) will air back to back on Sat May 3rd.

The Pocket TV Guide is FANTASTIC !!!!
