View Full Version : Is there a file manager that handles zips?

So, I'm brand new to the Palm platform, never really used PDAs much in the past... I've downloaded a few things from Blazer and quickly realized there's little to no ways to manage files I've downloaded (indeed, the palm os seems to expect all files on the device to be created and handled by the apps on the device, downloading files or having files on an SD card seems like a foreign concept). So, I installed FileZ and it's pretty nice...except I can't really do much with the files other than rename them and move them around (was enough to get a few movies playing with TCMP). Downloaded files are all coming as .zips, and there's no way to open them up. So, I tried PalmHandZipper or something to that effect. Shareware, kinda sucks for an unzipping utility but whatever. Unfortunately, it seemed intent to only unzip things to the device's memory, not my memory card (where the zip was) or say, where I wanted it. Of course it took me a while to figure out where it put the files...
So, is there a file managing utility like FileZ that will also handle unzipping files (preferably to the place where the .zip is, or possibly that asks me where to put it?)

Try RescoExplorer (http://www.resco-net.com)

Try UniCMD 1.8.1.3 (http://www.unicmd.de/files/unicmd1813en-free.zip) , if you want a FREE file manager that handles zips! :)

That looks exactly like what I was looking for...
Now I just gotta read up on the docs on how to add associations (open with...) for files and I'm set.
So far this forum is 1 for 1 :)

So...I tried UniCmd, looked really nice. Opened an image up, pressed the X button to presumably close it...and my palm reset itself, and has been sitting on the "palm Powered" screen for the past 10 minutes...
suggestions?
On most devices (mobile phone etc.) I'd just pull the battery...
Tried pressing the little reset button in the back, it just resets and gets to that same screen.

Try a warm reset: press and hold the 5-way nav Up button, press and release the reset button, when the palm logo appears release the Up button. This boots the palm into a "safe mode" and should let you check what went wrong.

Well, that got me into the device, however, upon trying to run anything I installed (tried RescoExplorer, AIM, and UniCMD) the device reset again.
Is there a list anywhere of the various keys for resetting and what they do?
I've heard the terms soft-reset, warm-reset, and hard-reset. What are the differences?
Thanks a lot...like I said...new to the palm world - is there a good "new users" post or site anywhere?

edit, also, my wifi seems to have vanished after this...

I don't know if there is a reset FAQ here, but you can check the different types of resets here (http://forum.brighthand.com/showthread.php?t=13189) .
Probably one of the files in your palm is corrupted and causing the problem. You can try deleting everything you installed immediately prior to the first reset (RescopExplorer,UniCMD, the image file, etc). After the warm reset and deleting be sure to make a soft reset, then test to see if everything's ok. It's advisable to do a hotsync before starting to test apps, in case something goes badly wrong.
EDIT: It's normal for the BT, WiFi, and many other functions to "vanish" or refuse to work when a palm boots with a warm reset. A warm reset loads a barebones OS without the drivers for BT, WiFi, etc. That's why you have to do a soft reset afterwards to load the full OS and regain those functions.

I ran UniCMD, it's great, however the jpeg opening is no no.

Hopefully you'll be able to delete the guilty app/settings and your device will be back to normal... if that does not work you may need to do a hard reset (clear all of your data and restore your device to factory settings) and then perform a Hotsync to restore.
Unfortunatly a Hotsync does not restore all of the application specific settings you may have had... For the most part it will only reinstall the applications and restore your data. I highly reccomend you use a backup program to reguarly backup your Palm's internal memory to the SD card... and then reguarly back that card up to your hard drive. Many backup programs for your Palm allow you to schedule a set time each day (BackupMan, RescoBackup, BackupBuddy). NVBackup is free, but does not have a scheduling mechanism built-in, but if you search around here there is some free software people have used in conjunction with NVbackup to create a scheduler.
RescoBackup is my personal favorite because it has a setting that will allow you to only backup the files that have changed since you last backed it up (speeding up the proccess) and allows you to easily create new sets specifically for restoring a device if something goes wrong after installing some trial software (like here).

NVBackup DOES have a scheduling component - I use it to backup everyday at 4:00am. Resco is also good & it will additionally allow you to schedule select days of the week and multiple times a day. However, I find that daily backups with the occasional additional manual backup (ie: before trying out new apps just in case something goes awry) is sufficient.
Sorry you've had an issue with UniCMD... I've been using it for a couple of years mainly because of it's unzipping abilities and it's a decent file manager. I've never gotten into big trouble while using it. Hope you can get it all worked out.

NVBackup is the best backup app out there, IMHO! It has saved my skin too many times to count. I use NVB to backup nightly (yes on a a schedule). I also use Resco Backup to backup a second backup set - just in case.
Sorry to hear about your problems with UniCMD. I've been using it now for about 3 months, ever since PCQ turned me on to it! It sounds like you've got a conflict there. Try using Stability Test (http://www.freewarepalm.com/utilities/stabilitytest.shtml) . I use this before and after installing any new app. This way I know immediately if the app is going to be a problem (most likely).
If you don't already have a backup app - Go GET ONE!

So as a reply to all of this...
It was the jpeg viewing of UniCMD that killed my TX in the first place. I ended up having to do a hard reset (even after warm reset, the machine would reboot upon me trying to delete an app). Luckily, all I had on there was my email setup and a couple of apps. I resetup versamail, installed TCMP again, and installed unicmd (making sure to stay clear of opening any images with it) and resync'd (with a new "user") with my machine to get my contacts / calendar data and all is well.
It's nice having a little machine to have my to-do list on, be able to read over emails, and via my cell phone get online from anywhere.
Overall, I've gone from a Nokia 6682 (Series 60 symbian device) to my older SE z520a + the TX and think it's a better combo (and combined weigh about the same as the nokia...and take up about the same pocket space)
