Now that the ms pro patch for the NX70v is out, how well does the ms pro really work?

Sony says speed will approx the same with the driver as the other MS's are. Native devices should be a lot faster with the MS Pro and not needing the driver.

Basically it works just like a regular MagicGate MS when used with the NX70s, allowing a much larger storage capacities, along with a higher price tag. Since the NX70 comes with CF Slot, (as CF cards are much less expensive than that of the MS PRO), it's also another "bang for the buck" alternative which you might want to consider.

According to Sony's site, MS PRO can display high-resolution digital images, CD-quality audio and DVD-quality moving images. The new MS PRO support high capacity, high-speed data transfer, real-time recording, and MagicGate technology with copyright protected content.

If you're into Digital Camera's which utilize the MS PRO, short video clips are said to be playable on the NX. As I've read in one of the earlier threads.

One more note is.... since the MS PRO support patch is only going into the NX's RAM & not the ROM, if you ever hard reset your NX, you wouldn't be able to do a recovery until you install the patch into your NX again, since without the patch your NX will not recognize the MS PRO

I would start another thread but this seems as good a place to ask previously answered questions.
I am on my last MS stick because they keep going bad on me( I think it is something to do with how I carry them, in my case or wallet) Regardless I am not very good at keeping the sony MS for more than a year without them becoming screwed up. My question, Given my expereinces I thuought I would wait for the CF driver and hope that CF cards where more sturdy than MS sticks? True? also if anyone would compare the Pros and Cons of both I would be grateful. I also considered the fact that a CF card could be used with a bluechip stick or other memory stick accessories (I think) and wanted to her more experienced opinoins about the trade off between losing my wifi slot as opposed to MS slot. I did seardh for thread to answer this 1st. Promise Francis

Is there any reason this patch cannot be put in flash?

sstrasser86

could you do this with jackflash?

From what I understand, you risk creating more problems when installing most updates and patches in flash. And even if you could put it flash with jackflash the part of the flash installed by jackflash is not recognized until you use jackflash or jackenable to see it after hard reset from an install or back-up stick(not ms pro of course).

Luckily the european version of the NX70 can read MS Pro without a patch. It just needs the MS Pro patch to be able to run MP3's (for longer than a second). I guess that's the benefit of always being last to get the new models.

cf are sturdier

Acording to your habbit of usage, I'd say that CF are much more suitable for you, since the MS tends to breakdown on you often. Also the CF are also far less expensive compared to the MS for the equal amount of storage. (But with the recent release of MS Pro, the price of the regular MS are dropping, do bare this in mind since you should least keep one MS on hand just incase, & what better place than to keep it on the MS Slot on the Clie? surely it wouldn't mess up there!)
With the release of the driver for the CF Slot, you can now use other means of hardware to store data other than the limited that Sony has to offer.

For more indepth detail about the CF as well as MS, see below link:

Thanks you guys!, I love this forum. I went ahead and got cc to refund one stick that was still under warrenty traded for a 256 ms pro and will wait for the cf driver. Really good advice on the empty ms slot i guess the obvious answer was eluding me. I can never have enough mamory. Using the ms pro for movies or music when the cf is available. I look back to my palm 515 days and wonder what i did for info/answers before cliesource, o thats right I didn't have many questions as nothing in the way of alternatives/accesories was available to me then.
Thank you, Francis

I definitely like the extra ms option. Just keep in mind that you would need a copy of the cf drivers on the extra ms to restore after a hard reset, just like you would need to inst. the ms pro drivers after reset. I'll use both the ms pro and cf, so both sets of drivers are on an exta ms, because you never know. Credit to n2ifp. He advised me on this one. Thanks Larry.

Francis,
Surely you already know the issues with MS PRO right?
Since the MS PRO patch goes only into the RAM, if you do a hard-reset, then you NX is back to OEM spec (just like new) & will not recognize the MS Pro, so always keep the MS PRO update driver ready in another regular MS (or your soon CF Card!) :D
That way you can get your NX to recognize the MS PRO then you can recover the whole system back to the last time you backup.

I've the 256mb MS Pro. It's reading speed is faster than normal MS by 60% but it's writing speed is slower by 10%.

Also final CompactFlash driver will be released on 4/22/03 (Tuesday) or 4/23/03 (Wednesday). Available on website (www.eruware.com)

Hi Eddy,

I think he'd be better off with your first suggestion,  because after the hard reset, he would lose the use of the cf also. Thats why I would keep a copy of both the ms pro and the cf drivers on an extra 128 ms.

Hey Eddy, you're my savior. You're the one who showed me how to use my ms pro weeks before the update came. By the way, I'm still sticking with the reformat. I've no issues so far!

Hey Paul, I'm truely flattered. It's nice to be appreciated & to make someone's day just a little happier. :D
Enough with all the humbleness... LOL... readers might say "What the....????" :D

BTW, I'm still browsing through those Japanese BBS from time to time, in hope that I might find something interesting to share again. Kinda like breaking the ice barrier between the "Japanese" & "English".

Well Eddy, since Amir just released the drivers, I can tell that yes, you knew it bro. I guess I gave it way when I stated you'd have to re-install the cf drivers as well as the ms pro's after a hard reset, but I guess I figured that most updates are patches had to be stored in ram. Anyway, they did a great job and man are they fast. I've been waiting for this for along time. Have fun. Feels good to be able discuss it now.

Later,

Paul

Hey Strongeek, or Eddy or any of the nice people who have made my learning disabilities so much easier with thier wealth of info. and direction. one more question,

Can you point me in the direction of the thread that you mentioned about fromatting ms pro (see qoute) or tell me if it is ness. after I downloaded the driver from sony that was deigned for ms pro. I did searches and read and got TMI so i am not sure what is correct and still applicable as far as history is concerned.

I am trying to load music on my memory stick pro magic gate 256mb and can't seem to do it the way that I used to with my old magic gate reg. 128mb stick. If I sould find the correct thread I could figure out what I need to do to import music.

A very hearty thanks to all the informative responces about the choice between ms and cf. I feel so in the know, you guys rock! Francis

P.S. magic (gate) is anything you don't understand

Yew that is it, I thank you if I follow these inst. I should be able to transfer music? sorry for all the tediom but I am confused between the fat format stuff and the driver update from sony and what is really needed now if I already installed the driver, mabey the music won't work because I am impoting wrong.

I'm using those instructions for my 256Mb MSPro, i don't see the point in loading the drivers / patch (which will be lost on a hard reset anyway) - everything works fine for me, including mp3 (music)

Thanks that is what I will do I guess I did not want to face the fact of re-copying my apps and formatting and putting them back again, just too lazy to hear the truth i gusess I will stick with your answer as sony never seems to return my calls. Thanks Francis

Hi franci,

if you intsall the ms pro update, you don't need to reformat. Hope this helps The reformat option allowed us to be able to use the apps nearly a month before the release of the update.

Good Luck,

Paul

Now that's exciting. Can you post some specific numbers (and brands of MS and MS Pro)? I'm more interested in increasing speed than amount of RAM, so MS Pro might be for me...

Thanks!
