View Full Version : Post Pictures taken with TH55 Camera!

People have always been saying negative things about the TH55's camera - Too much noise, streaks, bad in low lighting etc.... But one thing is for sure, it is incredibly convenient!

Of course you're not gonna use it to capture those birthday/vacation/holiday moments, thats what a cybershot is for! What you do have though is a handy camera with you at all times to capture those things you see during everyday events.
Now, instead of telling about what you saw, you can show them!!!

I've enjoyed seeing TH55 snaps in the odd topic. So why not make a topic dedicated to them?

Let's post away!

Nice idea. It is quite handy, took over 1000 pictures on my TH before it stopped working. :(

Here's a few of my favorites

I have a website that has some TH55 photos I have taken:

http://users.adelphia.net/~dgthomas05/music/index.html

Links to the photos are at the bottom of the page. I've been experimenting with taking photos of objects in a way that strips away the surrounding context of the object (or portion of object). Sometimes I get interesting results... imho. :)

Here's a few I've got. Often I look for a picture-of-the-day! Meisterz: nice shot of that Gallardo. . .I took a similar picture of a yellow one in a parking lot once!

**couldn't figure out how to embed the pictures in the body. . .sorry!

This image is made up of about 12 images stitched together. I've found that a Nikon -5 diopter viewfinder lens helps with the soft Sony focus. The TH55 camera really is made for head shots, but I found it's very useful for snapping images in stores...

Trueno, your second pictures of 3 spherical tanks looks like in Freeport, Texas, on the way to Surfside beach. Is that correct?

Do they have to be 640x480 or smaller?

I tried linking to my image uploaded to the gallery, but no luck...

That is correct! I took that pic in 2004 while visiting relatives.

Does anyone here actually take pictures as instructed in the manual?

The manual also tells you to use the lanyard - a great thing in a lausy place though, so when I take pictures, my fingers are busy getting it out of the lens' way.

If you turn it horizontally (landscape), it will be just like a Sony digitial camera with the Capture button on top.

It seems that the picture quality of the camera of the TH55 is a lot better than the Zire 72.

Funny you mention this, DanT. On the TJ27/37, when you go into the Camera app the display automatically rotates to where the capture button is on the top right corner. It's a very comfortable way to hold your PDA while taking a picture.

It works similarly well on the TH55 with the viewfinder (although the software app does not rotate like the TJ's.) It just makes it more stable and thus easier to take a better photo. I actually have the Capture button defaulted to the Movie Rec app since when you add this app to the TH55, it will let you go to Camera from Movie Rec, but not to Movie Rec from Camera. So, with one hand, I open the lens cover, scroll down 2 clicks and then press to select to get to the regular Camera app.

Of course, as a drug rep out in the field all day, I often retrieve my '55 from its holster and snap a shot (one-handed) of whatever funny-scene-du-jour I find!

Great idea, salesrep! How did you redirect the camera shutter to the MovieRec instead of Stills?

Oh, nevermind. I found it. :o

Yeah, it works well. For anyone else who may not know, just go into the Camera app. . .Options (from the drop-down). . .Capture Button Setting. . .and Bob's your uncle!

As far as scrolling down 2 clicks, if people do not know, the onscreen soft Capture button is highlighted by default, meaning that if you press the scroll wheel, then it will snap a still shot. By scrolling, it will go from Capture, to Zoom, to Settings, to selecting recent pictures you've taken (in the DIA space at the bottom,) then to CLIE Viewer, then Self-Timer, and back to Capture. When you're in the Movie Rec app, scrolling the wheel does the same thing.

So basically taking a picture or movie can be performed completely one-handed (as long as your hands are big enough, I guess--I'm 6'4") as well as zooming or whatever you need.

How you hold the camera doesn't matter. The problem is the lens and the fact that the image is relatively sharp in the middle and softens tiwards the edges.

I have done extensive testing with my optometrist' diopter lens kit and found that I needed to add about -5 diopters to the lens to get it to focus better. The problem comes in finding a way to mount the adapter lens. I tried tape and glue. The epoxy worked best, but the lens sticks out past the back of the TH.

The cell phone lens adapters that are sold from sites like Brando don't work; they simply magnify an already soft image.

The panorama I provided the link for above is shot with the adapter lens and then stitched using Autostitch:

http://www.cs.ubc.ca/~mbrown/autostitch/autostitch.html

The lens I use for correction is one of these:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Nikon-0-Diopter-Standard-Screw-In-for-F2-F3-MF-SLR_W0QQitemZ7629559616QQihZ017QQcategoryZ29971QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The link is for a +0 adapter, but you need something in the -3.0 to -5.0 range.

As I have said before: The "camera" in the TH55 is for head-shots for the address book. If you're at Costco and want the details of a product tag, it'll do that too, but DON'T expect it to shoot a room or landscape with any great detail. The lens is optomized for 3'0" or less.

I always wondered how many new TH55's are still left. Laying around in independent electronics stores and the like. How many? 10's, 100's, 1000+?

GREAT tip! I never realized that before I read it here (maybe because I added the Movie Rec app after playing with all the settings?) anyway - I always wished it was the other way around - so I could first launch the still app, then switch to movie...

Today I have finally added this feature to LensWarning 0.5 :D
You're all welcome to enjoy it too (freeware):

http://mbdynip.dyndns.org/external/1src.com/dsc00066.jpgIf Sony had continued to release camera-equipped Clies you'd no longer be able to take pictures like that. DRM software, rootkits, other anti-piracy measures, etc. ;)
