What programs and accessories do i need or that would make the mp3 player play at an optimum level. Do i definitely need a magic gate memory stick or can i just buy a regular one?

Go with a normal memory stick, Magic Gate is only needed if you want to use Sony's ATRAC3 format. It's not worth it for most people as they're happy with regular MP3's & normal memory sticks are cheaper. You might want to check out the new sticks that have a switch giving you two banks of 128MB each if you're planning on having lots of music stored for use on your Clie.

The magicgate memory stick is a big fraud coming from sony!! They make people think they have to use the magicgate memory stick for mp3's, and that is not at all the case!! The magicgate has a copywright protection manager built in that only allows certain songs to be played. The only thing the magicgate has over the purple ms is that it can play songs at a lower bit rate. I believe it will play them down to 33kbps, while the purple ms has to be 96kbps or greater.

I found a 128 MB memory stick on buy.com yesterday for $30 after rebate.

I used dBpoweramp music converter, and tried all the available bit rate conversions while staying at a frequency of 44.1, and had success at 32, 48, 80 kbps and all higher available rates. Of course, even though I was able to convert successfully and play them on my sj33, they sounded pretty bad at those bit rates, so IMO the best thing to do is to simply buy a 128 MB memory stick and keep the bit rates at 96 kbps or above.
