View Full Version : Where do you install your apps? (Main Mem or expansion cards)

Hi!

Just wanted to know... where or how do you determine the 'criteria' of the destination of new apps you install... i.e.; do you try to minimize use of the main memory installing everything that's possible to SD (apps that don't need to run at "startup"), or do you keep everything in your main mem? Or another criteria?

Thanks.

It depends on two things:
1. how often I use the program (not very often => card; often => RAM)
2. file size of the program files (big =>; small => RAM)
Apps which startup etc. remain in RAM.

Back when I had my TH55 (32MB RAM) I tried to keep ~10MB of RAM free and thus did just like c-j-archer described.

Now with my T|X (~128MB of internal memory), I have everything installed in RAM (NVFS actually) and still have about 62MB free. I actually don't feel the need to install anything on card at all...

So: It depends on the amount of memory the device has - I'd always try to keep a certain amount of memory free for applications to run and, if necessary, would do exactly what c-j-archer suggests.

I've graduated from a handspring deluxe w/8mb springboard "card" to m505 w/32 mb sd card-128mb sd to T|T w/512mb sd to TX w/4gb sd. the handspring had next to no RAM and the TX has 128mb NVRAM. Due to my previous device restrictions, I've gotten into the habit of putting everything that can go onto the card, on the card. I even have a copy of PowerRun to help this procedure (it was a necessity with my T|T with only 16mb RAM). I've put a lot of stuff on my TX, a lot on the device itself, because it's faster and has all that space. But I still have a ton of stuff on my card. I still have over 75mb free on my TX.

As an Sony Clie NX-80 owner, I still benefit from JackFlash. This app plus ZLauncher allows me to efficiently manage my applications. 'Prime Time' apps like Agendus, ZLauncher and Documents To Go run from Flash ROM. Secondary and tertiary apps such as games, miscellaneous untilities and reference materials are stored on the memory stick. Things like DAs and other apps that do not run from Flash are in RAM. This generally leave me with 9-10MB of RAM free at all times.

Apps that CAN NOT go on cards:

#1) If they need to sync with a desktop conduit and are not mooching off of a built in apps database (like DateBk or Agendus) have to go in main memory. HotSync Manager WILL NOT run the conduit of any app it does not find in main memory.

#2) If the app runs in the background to support alarms, etc, it should remain in main memory.

#3) If the app is launched by another app that is not aware that it might be on an external storage card

What about these...:

1) Verichat - Would it still alert me and work in background mode? I guess the auto connect on Palm power up wouldn't work since it wouldn't get notified as it's in the card.

2) Resco Explorer... would I miss any functionality if I put it in the card?

THanks.

I always chuck everything into my T3's RAM; except for apps that I really use very rarely...

As for Verichat, that is an app that should stay in RAM imho.

I have a very old post on TamsPalm that gives a few points on this; really gotta revisit that someday!

Mmmm... there says to try to keep everything possiblem in the card.

Why do you say that Verichat should stay in Memory? And what about Resco Explorer? Thanks.

I have everything in RAM, but I will toss a game onto a card (or just delete it) if I haven't been playing it and it takes up a 1MB or more of room.

Verichat should stay in RAM because when its on card you can't use its background function any longer. When it is in RAM it will run in the background (if it is correctly configured).
RescoExplorer can be put on card. But when you use the function of rebilding the exchangeprefs after a reset it must be in RAM.

As for Resco Explorer... it depends on how you use it. I think that if you use it as a replacement launcher, it needs to stay in main memory. I may be wrong though. I keep in in main memory on my 650 simply because I want/need to launch it from the phone app quick laucher (which doesn't support launching apps from card). But as for just using it as a file explorer (ala Filez) it certainly can go on card.

For the verichat background feature... do you mean the one that, when you go to another app, you continue receiving further alerts? Or the background-thing that it auto connects when the Palm is powered up? Have you tested for both?

Thanks.
