View Full Version : Can't call ISP through my TX and a SE W800i
Hi,
I have the following problem.
Although I correctly pair my TX and my SE W800i and call numbers, send SMSs and send and receive files, I cannot connect to my ISP (dial up).
It starts dialing the number and stops. It retries, and stops again. After that I get a "no carrier" error message on my TX.
When I do the "test" option in Prefs -> Phone, I get an OK message and a prompt to modify the init string.
Can someone post me a good init string for me? (if that is the problem)
thanks,
xpan
PS: At the same time, my wifi connection works OK (if this means something)

Haha, sure I can answer :). Just came accross the answer like last week :).
The thing is you can't! Mobile phone carriers want you to use their GPRS networks for carrying data and thus will prevent any data from being carried from ISPs.
I came accross this on Howards forums last week when looking for something else.
So you have to use their pricey data plan to surf or you're screwed  .
I know, it's quite lame from them. It sucks big time. Anyway, who can afford surfing @ 5 cents / kb? I mean just making a connection with my phone and getting to the small text only home page is like 2.5kb. I just can't imagine a whole web page lol.
this sounds logical (from the company's side)...
however seems a bit strange, because when I dial my ISP's number myself using the phone only, I get connected (I can hear the famous modem-connection-sound).
It is not very important because it is very sssssllllow but it can come in handy in case of emergency (when I need to download the headings of my e-mails to check if sth urgent awaits in my mailbox)

If you can afford it, always buy unlocked phones from the manufacturer or a 3rd party, i know it's hard for you folks in the states, but it's the only way to get proper independence from those pesky carriers.

The problem is that modems use and expect a larger frequency range than is reproduced in typical cell phone reception. That's why some carriers have a special provision for allowing analog data calls, which usually costs extra if they let you do it at all.
Once upon a time I had a "piggybacked" telephone line that was a digital subcarrier on the main line. I could dial in with full 14.4kbps (best at the time) on the main line, but on my line I had to drop to 9600 or 4800 for a reliable connection.
Or another way to think about it - what if you watched American Idol and everything was encoded as 16 kbps MP3? Might even the playfield a bit, hahahaha.
my phone is unlocked (most phones in Europe are unlocked) and I used to get connected with my previous phone (Sony Ericsson, again). The reason I bought a Sony Ericsson phone is the fact that they are the most combatible with the Palm devices.
Is there anyone out there that uses other init string than the one provided with the TX, concerning SE phones?

I've been using my TX and w800i to dial up without problems... Thats in the UK though. I dont use any scipts or AT commands.
Troubleshooting (some of these might sound simplistic but im not trying to insult your intelligence. Its just that the devil is in the details.)
-Did you use the phone setup wizard on the palm?
-Did you select 'SonyEricsson' and 'other' as the phone brand and model?
-Have you tried dialing up a different connection?
-Have you tried dialing up using the same network settings on your palm with a different phone?
-Are you sure about the number?
-Did you enter the ISDN number by mistake?
-Did your ISP provide you with a script to use?
-Does your ISP open up a telnet type window when you dial up with your computer? (I remember a few greek ISPs doing it a few years back... I think they stopped it but who knows.)
-Have you tried to delete the connection and the network settings from your palm and try again?
-In the connection settings, which driver is your phone using? Mine in using the 'Univ. Phone Driver'

It depends on your phone provider, too. I dial up to Earthlink through my T-Mobile phone with no problems at all, unless a local cell is having problems handling data calls. It's billed as regular minutes, since it's a "data/fax call" and not GPRS.

thanks!
most of the points you' ve mentioned have been double-checked. But I will go through some of them once more.
I need to know if someone else is able to dialup using a TX and a SE 800i (or the like), in order to keep trying
One more question. Do I need to download the latest Phone Link Update from Palm.com for my TX?

As I said,I have been dialing up with my TX and w800i without problems but not in Greece.
I seriously doubt that I installed any Phone Link updates to my palm, although I was online when I installed palm desktop and I think that it did download something during the installation.
