Palm Desktop 4.1

Is it possible to use Palm Desktop 4.1 with the T665C rather than the 4.0.1 version that came with my Clie?

I had had no problems using 4.1 with my Handera 330 (PalmOS 3.5) and like it better than 4.0.1.

Unfortunately, it poses some problems with the hotsync. The USB driver does not work as well, and you'd begin getting USB device not recognized messages.
Tried it in three different machines with my N760C and worked one of each 7/10 times....

You know, that is probably the reason you see so many threads on "Can't Hotsync". I'll bet some of the posters may have upgraded to 4.1 and suddenly couldn't hotsync.
I didn't think of it that way before.

I had been trying Palm Desktop 4.1 with the T665C, it works very well.
Do not uninstall the 4.0.1 version that came with my Clie, you just need to append the new version over it.
Remember follow the instruction carefully, do not install Notepad and Expense - these are for Palm PDA

It did work with my n760c, but had many a hotsync problems, as the new installation over the existing Palm Desktop, in fact keeps only your personal data, uninstalls the "old" CLIE Palm Desktop, and installs the Palm one.
Now, I reverted to the one included with the CLIE (4.0.1)and it works beatufully, no HotSync problems.

I thought in the past the HotSync problems were due to the contacts in the CLIE, but after installing the CLIE Desktop it worked perfectly.

Just my experience...;)

Were you able to have the 4.1 version running then after installing the Sony on top? I have the Sony already installed and noticed the 4.1 version on the www.palm.com website and the www.palmsource.com website. Which version did you download and what would you recommend? It looks like it might have more functionality.

The Sony update to Palm Desktop 4.1 is here. It works fine with both my N series and my NR. There doesn't seem to be a huge difference from 4.0.1.

As you may see, it only works with the NX Series, not the rest of the series, and as a matter of fact that is how Sony advertises this update.

When I used 4.1, it was over 4.0.1...But it shouldn't make much difference, as 4.1 uninstalls completely 4.01. It only leaves your personal data (user, etc..)

Before I read your post, I followed the link that Sebring posted and downloaded Palm Desktop 4.1 for Clie, installed it (Letting it replace my previous version) and it worked. I have hotsynced several times without any problems. Just for safe measure, I even rebooted (Win XP Pro) and hotsynced again. No errors, no problems.

BTW, I have a 615C.

What changes have been made to the Desktop from v4.01 to v4.1?

I gave up and switched to Outlook. I use it so much at home anyway. Now I will need Avat Pylon, so I can sync at work, too. LOL, that will hard and expensive.

I updated to the 4.1 from Sony awhile back and have had no problems hotsyncing. The only problem I have had is that the desktop alarm does not work. None of my datebook alarms will come up on my PC. They used to with 4.01.

The enhancements to 4.1 are twofold. First, there are some cosmetic changes. Second, Palm has rewritten the code to make the PalmDesktop functions available to programmers so they can access the functions from their own programs (i.e. someone writes a program that does X and then creates a memo in the PalmDesktop to send to the Handheld).

I updated to to v. 4.1 with my NR70V a long time ago, so I don't quite remember the exact steps I took, but it went something like this. I installed Desktop 4.1 downloaded from the Palm site, and my Clie wouldn't sync. I went back to the Sony disk, reinstalled the Sony HotSync Manager over the Palm version, and everything has worked ever since. The NR70 has issues with the Palm HotSync manager, but the new desktop works fine. I can't really see what the difference is though...
