View Full Version : Crossposting from Brighthand: Autosynching files on T|X like LifeDrive?

It's been almost 6 months since I happily gave up my LifeDrive for my T|X, and in that time, I miss only two things about the LD. The first is the ~4 GB of storage, which meant I could carry not only all my data, video and Mapopolis maps but many MP3s as well. I just ordered the Transcend 4GB SD card from Newegg ($70 delivered, after $30 mail-in rebate), so that difference will soon be history.

The other thing I miss is a bit more difficult to fix, so I'm turning to this group for advice. With the LifeDrive, I could designate certain directories on my PC to be mirrored on the LD's hard drive. With every Hotsync, changes in both directions would be copied over, and I was able to carry all of my working files with me in native format (readable with Docs2Go). This was a good thing, considering that I am a very mobile worker. With the new 4 GB card coming, I once again have the storage space (actually more than I had on the LD), but the standard Hotsync doesn't have the capability to mirror files from my computer.

Is there a utility out there that can put this functionality on my T|X? Has anyone tested the LifeDrive software on the T|X, for that matter? I know Drive Mode has been shown to work on the T|X's internal RAM, but this is something different.

If this doesn't yet exist, it seems to be a great opportunity for a Palm developer out there (yo, Dmitry!), given that 2GB and 4GB cards are becoming affordable. I'd pay for it in a heartbeat.

Thanks, and I look forward to some hopefully good news on this. {Prof. Jonathan}

I'd like to see a solution that is within EULA and other licensing agreements.

This isn't exactly what you're looking for but with a combination of an app like Drive Mode or CardExport or CardReader and a windoze app called SyncBack I syncronize parts of my card to my PC. I personally do this as more of a card backup solution but SyncBack is very configurable and you could make do just what you ask. You'll also need an app like 2PlayMe to schedule the launch of the card reader app on the Palm side.

I use the freeware version of SyncBack

My Transcend 4GB SD card is in and working fine on my T|X, and now I *really* want to be able to mirror directories and files (ala LifeDrive) on every Hotsync. Please, Dmitry, I would pay you at least $20 for this app, and I'm sure others here would be willing to pay for it as well!

I imagine doing this might require a fixed assignment for the SD card, and perhaps running Drive Mode (which I'm happy to do).

Oh please--can't someone find a solution for this? Thanks! {Jonathan}

I don't think you need to pay for anything. Get the drivemode working on your card and use SyncToy for Microsoft (sorry no handy link but you be able to google it). We have used with with our distributors to sync up there product support directories.

Um, well, if you have a Mac. Folder synchronization is included in the Missing Sync:

or just use Card Reader (or simular) and Windows 'briefcases' (it's part of the operating system, not very well known, but does what it's supposed to).

That looks exactly like what I wanted--thanks!

Or not. Not sure yet whether you can specify any directories other than the specific backup one. I want ideally to sync two different directories from my PC to my card. Also, it seems that Bluesync won't overwrite a file changed on one platform to the other, but will create copies with numerically-identified names. :( I'm going to explore the demo, but I'm not encouraged. The DriveMode + Synctoy doesn't really work the way I want it to (automatically on Hotsync), but that might end up being my only choice. :( squared. {Prof. Jonathan}
