View Full Version : HELP: I've got the "can't tap" blues

My son, in his infinite wisdom, was playing with my PEG-SJ33/U, who gunked up the screen. My wife sprayed Windex on it to "clean it."
As the subject says, I can not tap anywhere on the screen. After a soft and hard reset, same result.
I can't find any example of this on any of the forums, and wanted someone's two cents on what I should try.
Thanks....

...well, I've been married twice and my first advice would be to to get rid of the MOM and the Kid (respectively)..... That should solve MOST of the problem.....
...just kidding... (am I REALLY??)
Hey, I feel for ya... If it's of any consequence(sp) I just had to do my FIRST Hard Reset.... Lost Everything... (like my first marriage). Fortunately I'm an Anal Backup Fanatic. Fortunately I knew enough to adjust the Sync Properties to have the Desktop properties Overwwrite the handheld......
...Hope ya recover soon....

If it is still in the warranty period, I suggest you send it back to Sony for repair.

You already know what has to be done. What the gunk didn't attack, the windex most likely did. Another site suggested a hair drier set to low to dry out the pda. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DON'T EVER DO THIS !! Time to contact Sony ( even if the warrenty has expired ) Also remeber, these pda's look just like gameboys to a kid, so take this as a learning experience, and lock it up. Very best of luck on getting this resolved

Thanks for the info. I have an N610C that needs new LEDs. Do your replacement screens include the LED modules?

I really feel for you. Why don't you try this:
1. Obtain a couple of those little silica gel packs from a packing store. You know, the little paper packs that look like a sugar packet and say "do not eat".
2. Place the little packs on a cookie sheet an put them in a 150 - 200 degree oven for an hour or so. This is to dry them out. Notice that you do NOT put the PDA in the oven. Cool the packets in a dry place for about 30 minutes.
3. Place the packets and the PDA in a ziplock sandwich bag and let them sit overnight.
Quick techie lesson:
The touch screen is essentially a grid with circuit lines running horizontally and vertically in separate layers of the screen. Pressure contacts the horizontal to the vertical grid, which identifies the point of contact. Think of it like a spreadsheet with each possible contact point being a cell. Every point can be thought of as an intersection of column and row.
Moisture can get around the edge of the screen and short out the contacts for the grid. When this happens, it's just like hitting two points on the grid at the same time. The processor cannot determine which point you intend, so it does nothing. Drying it out can help. However, with ammonia or acid residue from the windex, drying it out will prevent contact, but your pda will always be more sensitive to ambient humidity than others and may occasionally produce dead spots in the grid, or stop responding. That's why it is recommended that you replace the screen.
And no, they can't really seal it any better in the manufacture process. It turns out that the screen needs to "float" under the rim of the frame so that the screen surface can flex slightly under pressure without creating a contact point on the frame.
Hope all this helps.

I like the Silica Packet suggestion... I'll have to remember that one.
Bad news is that I wet the screen of my Palm IIIxe (to clean it) a long time ago. It never recovered. I had to replace the screen. I wish I had known about the Silica trick... I would have tried it.
Strange how equipment is though. A year ago, I bought a pair of Motorola walkie-talkies to use at the local county fair. The first day, my wife (there's that "wife thing" again...) was doing something near a horse stall, and the day-old walkie-talkie took a swim to the bottom of a horse's water bucket. She fished it out, I dried it off, and it has worked perfectly ever since. Funny thing is; it was turned ON at the time it took the swim. Go figure?
Hope you can fix your unit ...and forgive your wife!
The digitizer can get easily damage. Afterall it is a thin, plastic-like, film glued on top of a thin (1mm) sheet of glass support. The first rule of the game is to put screen protector.
