I have been running 2.33 for a long time. Just found that 2.35 is out:
http://www.mapopolis.com/home.jsp?v=5&pg=dl&s=1152416795256649&p=&q=2
This update is targeting the newer Palms that run NVFS, but after installing on my TH55 I find that it is lightning fast! I mean . . . I'm amazed!

I wonder if they fixed that "cannot enumerate blahblah audio directory" bug? Well, that's not a biggie, but glad a new version's out. Will download! Mapopolis is so useful, especially when you don't have GPS. :p
Thanks for the update! It works much faster on my TX too!
I am also pleased to report that I can now load multiple counties and the state map and have it display with no problems. This was not possible with the previous version.

I've been using 3.35 for about a week (which is how long I've had my TX!). If you also have a TX, you may want to read their "Device Specific" info on the TX, here:

So do you guys still feel that Mapopolis is a pretty good option for a non-GPS user, or is there now something better out?
Also, how much does it cost on average to get a pretty good set of maps?

It's still the best and without GPS I still find it very useful, especially as it integrates with Agendus. I can look up a contact (with an address on a map I have loaded) and tap the "map icon" by the contact and Mapopolis launches, searches for a few seconds, and BAM!, I'm looking at the contact's address, without any address entry on my part. Agendus will also lookup addresses over the net, so the combination of the two apps are awesome for contact management and address directions.
Maps are $19.00 per county or $34.00 annual for all the maps you can eat! :D (platinum). So unless you know for a fact you will only need one county, guess which is the better deal? :p
You can download an entire state in one large zip file, which is what I did, and if I happen to go on an out-of-state trip, I just go get the local map(s) I need.
I went to Rochester, NY once and the rental car lady asked if I was familiar with the area, to which I said "no." She said "Oh, well you want a map then?" To which I said "no!" I left her in her anguish as I walked off with the keys, TH55/mapopolis loaded for Rochester and directions from the airport to my hotel already searched. :)

BAM indeed! It is so much faster on my TH55! There were also problems with the previous version and grafitti recognition on some devices, and this update solves that too! What a nice way to end my day at work. (hope my boss doesn't browse this forum). :D

The $34 deal is for me! I'm planning on doing some cross-country touring (NYC-> L.A., Route 66, Ohio -> Miami) so I'll be needing just about the whole U.S., right?
That means for $34, I can download all the lower 48 states, and unzip it all to an SD card, along with the mapopolis.prc . All I need to do then is to figure out how to get my GPS to work...
Or should I get the oem NavCard from Mapopolis.
BTW, I'm using Tungsten E. Great Palm.

Oh another issue I discovered that if you have too many folders on your SD card it blows up, as it can't handle it all. Ah well. A lack of Asian maps is another issue.

For what it is, I don't think I'd put anything else but Mapopolis on the SD card, except maybe one or two other car apps like TripBoss. ( shameless plug) ;) I wonder how many Megs it takes for the whole country? One counties is about 3-4 Megs, and there are 88 counties in Ohio alone...
Who's got a Mapopolis Nav Card?
thx

WOW!
You weren't kidding! This new version is WAY faster on my TH than the previous version. I had actually stopped using this app due to the fact it was DEATHLY SLOW on my TH55.
In the meantime I recently discovered, and began using Google Maps for PalmOS:
http://www.google.com/gmm/treo
Which is amazing, btw.
Thanks again wellsjs! :)

If you want to try it out in your area, you could try emailing lamar-at-mapopolis-dot-com. I did, and he sent me 2 local maps. You get a 9 ( ) day trial period.

Does anyone know of anyway to download the Major Road maps without a disc or purchasing a MapPack? My son removed my region cd to play one of his games and now we can't find it anywhere. Ideas? Other than killing my son? My wife won't let me. Besides, I kinda like him too.

I have ditched Mapopolis after years as a faithful customer due to GoogleMaps. Of course it helps to have a smartphone as you must have connectivity to move about the maps, but I don't have to worry about buying, downloading, installing maps, and the driving directions, detail, accuracy and satellite view functions are awesome! Now if only Agendus will integrate with GoogleMaps so I can pull up a contact, tap the map icon, and have GoogleMaps launch to the contact's map view, that would be excellent! ;)

The best reason I like about Mapopolis, is that you don't have to carry a laptop with you tmo load new maps if you deviate off the plotted route, or want a different route to somewhere else. I pitched DeLorme street Atlas for that reason.

When you buy a state map, is it seperated by counties like the individual trials? If they are, does it automatically switch to the next county as your driving accross county lines?

Yes...it will seamlessly change maps for routing.

caseyatbt and kennyd, perhaps the answer should be a "qualified" yes. County maps change seamlessly, assuming you have hooked up a GPS receiver. :)

If you aren't using a gps device then you have to press a button with each step of your route but you are still able to span across multiple maps. This works best if you place only the necessary counties in the same directory on your sd card.

The only problem area I see that needs to be worked on, is the long time it takes to search for an address, and the inability to locate an address at all! If you don't KNOW the counties of the beginning & end points, then then you won't find an address, so you really can't just 'search' for an address like you would on amapping website, with street address & city/state or zipcode.
If there was a database you could keep on your Palm of cities & counties, then it would help, but there must be two or three thousand couties in the U.S.A!
thx

As far as address lookup, I don't feel like it takes too long. I've used it on my Zodiac, TX, and Treo 650. I do organize my counties by directories. This does take some home work to set up your card structure well. There is a major roads map available for each state. With this it is possible to travel all the way from coast to coast and only have two county maps and all of the necessary major road maps. I live in OKC OK and primarily use a directory that has the OK major road map and all surrounding OKC counties. There is some great manuals on this subject available at mapopolis' website. I'm not sure that any of the mapping software available for palms can function like mapping software on a pc ie being able to have every map available for the continental us without having to structure that information for efficiency. I haven't tried tom tom or others but I can't imagine how a palm could handle a load like that.

It should be noted for anyone considering buying it that according to Mapopolis support the product is being discontinued.

Where did you get that rumor? From looking at the web site, the support is there as it always was. I even heard that they are expanding support to a new device. Maybe they are only supporting the current version?
For my earlier difficulty with finding an address, using a postal code help to narror the area, THEN using an address for the contacts list, will get you location just about anywhere (in the lower U.S.A.) So far I've tested it in OH and FL.
thx

As far as the capabilities of Mapopolis go, the only thing I can think of to improve the software would be the ability to print out the maplets, like the 'trip-tix' you could get from a AAA agency.

If you click on the link in my previous post - it shows a posting by Lamar (Mapopolis Rep) where he talks about the discontinuance of the pda product.

Yes, it's true . . . Mapopolis is going to focus on their core business, stand-alone GPS devices. They plan to cease support March 31st with downloads available for one year after that. Development of the Palm OS Mapopolis has ceased.
Go Google Maps! ;)

That's sad. I hope that TomTom will be continuing to develop for palmos. I wonder why garrmin never ventured into software development for palms. The garmin palm device is a nice device you wouldn't think that it would have unproffitable for them to have made software available for newer palm devices. It's kind of sad to think about how much time and resources it takes for developers to establish a stable software offering on devices that aren't even out of beta development straight from the manufacturer. I really do hope that the new linux core devices will offer a better platform for developers.
