Rick, how did you manage to purchase your PDA? I am 15, and used my confirmation money. Actually, I have always somehow been able to obtain the PDA I want. When I had my N760, I got it by buying a unit with a broken touchscreen, and replaced it. That's how addicted I am!

From deal from dell. My dad got a dell desktop, and it came with 100 of a preheral,so I got a 400 NX-60. Sold my old T-615, and used some cristmas money. Thats how I got my NX.

so rick, what do you use your clie for? Must be the envy of everyone in your class

what grade are you in if you're 11? Wow, I don't even remember being that young, I don't even think I had a walkman back then :p

A Walkman? When I was 11, my neighborhood had *just* gotten dial phones, instead of having to deal with an operator.

Oh, how we dreamt of getting a color TV!

I'm 36....(I think), When I was 16-19 I was programing assembly on my Commodore 64, before that it was the old intellevision game system with the computer attachment. Before that I dreampt of a trs-80 (Trash-80 in laymens terms). Some here probably never have seen a 12" floppy :)

Bring it to school and write down everything on it. It's really great since the teachers are usually almost afraid of anything too high-tech, so they won't even come near you, so you can just start up your newest game and wait till school's out.

Im afraid of the rules( seperated from clie till end of school, horror of horrors also SUPER-DEAD Clie) I want a T-415 or some model not to valuble to take to school(maybe my moms SJ-20 if she upgrades).

Just ask the teachers first. They are usually are afraid to say "no you can't bring it, because then I won't know what you are doing" . About valueable, The only thing that ever got stolen, or maybe just lost was a nice pen is 5th grade and I'm in 13 now.

No, under 11 yrs. I'm talkin little kids. I realize people like you can put these devices in good use because of the know how and all that you have (trust me, I'm in the same boat with you). I meant as in little kids. And I know it's not going to happen, so I don't want to see "d00d i sweaer im 7 and i use the sony devisce (is that how u speel it?) all teh time" posts on here.

And to make this post worth it, I'm 16 and use it for almost everything imaginable.

Oh trust me, when I told my Teacher I could record his voice with it, he freaked. THEN I told him I can take his picture too. That made him more uncomfortable. THEN I told him I could record movies of him lecturing. It made for a good laugh from the students, until he told me he never wanted to see the thing again for whatever reason. Meh. I gave it a week, started using it again. No biggie.

EDIT: NO SILLY! I meant little kids. As in single digits! It's ok! I was teaching my mother how to record a movie using the VCR when I was 3! But that doesn't mean I knew how to use a fully functional palm pilot!

HEY!I worked for the money for this thing! (well the one before, which when sold provided most of the NX money.)

15 here... notes, video recording, voice recording, bonsai, movie player, e-books... ok, everything. they call me the necromancer and they refer to my palm as my "magic wand." they realize i have great power over the school when i can posess televisions and vcrs... they're easily impressed. They know i will lose my powers if I lose my palm though- the necromancer without his magic wand. at least 6 hrs. of use per day (4 at school).

no case at the moment (waiting for the convertec to arrive). i have developed much faster reflexes to protect my clie. people want to kill it, i have to defend it.

owned a visor deluxe, m130 and now the nx, bought all with my own money. people ask me how this is possible considering I get $10 per week, i just tell them "drug dealing and pimping." actually, i participated in the m130 refund plan, cut the cost to 300 which isn't that bad at all. when they ask how much it cost, i give them the price in yen.

it's wonderful to have power over the clie-un-enlightened.

imadrin
04-18-2003, 08:46 PM
it really makes sense for any student with basic computer skills or better. it was between this or a laptop... the nx fits in my pocket, is instant-on, lasts the whole day, and has nice multimedia features. i believe that most students should have at least a 8mb visor, but i agree that an nx is not for everybody.

I am really surprised to see the difference between the 14-18s and the 18-24s. I wonder if somebody will analyze this one day. Is it just that the 18-24s have more money? Or is it that after having their first disappointments with members of the other gender, people turn to more reliable things like SONY and the Clie... ;)

cbulock
04-19-2003, 04:58 AM
I imagine it being a money thing. I'm 21 and I thought it was quite a big purchase. I imagine it would be harder for the 14-18 group to buy an NX. Not saying its not possible, as there are a number of people here who have them. You just have to want it more.

Me, I'm 15, and the only way I can get these things is by 1: Scraping up parts to build a Clie or 2: Scraping up enough money to get one. I only received a Handspring Visor Deluxe and a Palm IIIe as a gift.

n2ifp
04-19-2003, 10:04 AM
When I was 16, I had to go to work. I kept enough money to put gas in the car and the rest went to my mom for food. I would make a little extra on the side by fixing stuff for people.

These days, the young people seem to want to make $600.00 a week and then not have to work for it.

I am not picking on you Akfreas :).

akfreas
04-19-2003, 10:18 AM
Actually, I kinda predicted that somebody was going to say exactly what n2ifp said. I actually would be happy getting any sort of job. The thing is I can't. The only thing I have had close to a job was buying memory sticks with my dad's compusa discount and selling them on eBay. That was really fun, but I made very little money. So scraping up parts/money for a PDA is the only way to go.

No, just my opinion formulated on personal experiences and from other adults who are willing to pay good money. The young ones turn their nose up at it, because it entails actually doing some work :).

One example is a young person cries because they don't have enough money for their car insurance. Okay, so I offer them several hundred dollars to rake up the leaves in my yard over a weekend, but they can't, since they would miss their video games or favorite TV show.

One lawn contractor tells me he hires someone at $600.00 a week to help with his lawn service, they want the money, but then don't show up for work. There are many examples of such that I have seen to suggest otherwise.

Obviously there are some exceptions, but my observations tell me it's more the norm.

sadly you are correct N2ifp, my generation is filled with lazy and indfifferent people. you are absolutely correct that the majority of today's teenagers would rather listen to their music than try to make the world a better place or earn enough money to pay for their precious music.

my parents agreed to $50 for painting 1200 square feet of wall. sometimes i wish i had parents who'd pay me 600 a week to not work, but what kind of preparation is that for the future?

Why is the 18-24 range so large! Cause we are your next generation of computer nerds in training! Actually, i think the NX is the perfect college machine, especially now w/ the CF driver to watch my skateboard movies in class on near dvd quality ;). I'm 19 (near 20) and man, i've been a die hard PDA person, i'm on my 5th right now i think... Casio e100, Jornada 548, Ipaq 3635, Palm m130, Sony NX70v. All of those were bought w/ my own money except the NX70v, my dad was feelin pretty generous this past Christmas, (i think he was just proud of his college son :) ). But man, i remember, about 4 years ago now w/ the Casio e100 cost me about $400-$500! Talk about a brick!

I'm 33, almost 65 ... well it sure feels like it today anyway.

BTW: Tek, computer nerds are a thing of the past. You belong to a generation that has always had telephones (hell, the cellphone turned 30 this month), microwave ovens, television (in colour!) and VCRs. This sort of technology is so ingrained in your lives that knowing about computers is no longer only for freaks.

Be a "geek", but leave "nerds" for really bad moveis from the 70's and 80's.

I just wanted to point out to some people dissin on my generation. While it's true that a good part of the younger people are lazy and expect everything given to them, I think the older generations are somewhat to blame. I had a job since I was 16, and have paid for most everything I own (except for small gifts.) But I bought my car, my house, all my computer and electronic stuff. BUT, many people I know my age have parents that bought a car for them, paid for the insurance, gave them $50 to go out and do stuff. Paid for basicly anything they wanted. So, I don't think fingers should really be pointed at whos fault it is, but I think that it's a combination of a number of factors, and one of them being people who have parents that pay for everything will lead to people being lazy and just expecting to get everything for free.

Sorry to all the elders here, please don't take my post as an insult to you guys!:)

   Go to overstock.com, there's an nx70v deal for 400, then there's a 10% off coupon so you can get one for 360, I did, it's GLORIOUS!!!:D

Oh yeah, I forgot earlier, I have a friend who's 15, he has an nr70 but might get an nx. We fix pdas and stuff together sometimes.

Wow, that's $20 less than I paid for my NR on ebay 6 months ago! Of course if I bought that, my parents will think I always have to get the latest gadget. :D I don't know how much I could get for my NR on ebay...it has some scratches and it's been daily used for 6 mos. Anyway, thx 4 the info.

28 Here. I've had PDAs though ever since the first windows CE device came out. I used to hate palms but had to get one to compliment my watch camera. Casio only made the PDA transfer software for Palms not CE so I got a palm. Been a happy camper with Palm/Sony devices ever since. Though my camera watch software doesn't work on OS5 and they've stopped development. GRRRRR.

Think it stands for Child Online Privacy Protection Act, or something similar. Basicly you can't ask anyone under 13 for any kind of personal information. Thats why most sites now ask if your over 13 before asking you for you name and address.

I cut my teeth programming an Atari 800 (with 32K of RAM). I was initially hooked on a Handspring Visor Delux, moved to a Visor Prism, and got a Clie NX70 when Handspring abandoned us.

Now I amuse myself programming wargames for PalmOS.

I'm not that old but I can say when I was 16 I'd be surprised if the sum total of all my possesions, including the clothes on my back, were equal to the price of my current PDA and it's accessories. One of my coworkers said, "That's like a freaking mortgage, how in the world can you buy that?!?" I showed her all the features and said , "How could you NOT?!?" She told me not to ever show that device to her husband or she would kill me. All he will be getting is an M100 and a multi stylus pen. Muahahah.

This weekend I had to babysit my neices and nephews (6 of them) at my youngest sisters house. I rented a few dvds to watch while the kids played in the yard. I couldn't find the remotes for her TV, DVD Player or her stereo.

Whipping out the Clie remote was priceless. Saved my sanity and 6 manslaughter charges :)

well, I'm 15, and I have an NR70v, but the camera doesn't work. I'll be getting an NX70v as soon as my NR sells. It all started at christmas two years ago with a visor deluxe that my parents got me. I then bought two broken Palm IIIc's, fixed them with parts from each other, and sold my visor and the leftover parts. I ended up making about $10 in addition to getting a color palm. Recently, I did the same thing with two NR70s (actually one NR70 and one NR70v). That's what I have now, and it's working great. I have a friend who's going to sell his NX to me as soon as the NR gets sold.

P.S. ok, I admit it. I didn't actually buy two broken IIIc's on purpose, I got scammed on ebay with the first one and then bought another for parts to fix it with. I have to say though, it worked out pretty well.

shuddup ben. I did get the broken NRs on purpose, it's just that the first one wasn't broken the same way I expected. It didn't make a difference, I just had to get a different type of part. And I don't want to buy your NX, I know you won't sell it anyway.

What do all u other under 18's do when u want to get a prog that u have to pay 4 ? is there anyway to pay on the net if ure under 18 (without a card). I have to ask my parents every time i want to get a prog or game and they always complain.

Nice to see such a wide variety of users from different backgrounds and with different needs.

Just finished first year engineering and I know that having my NX70V would have been great. Sadly, I finally got around to saving up and purchasing it in the last two weeks of school.

My younger brother just bought a Palm M505 and my dad's thinking of getting a PDA too!

Damn Sony releasing the NX80! I could be using that at work instead of "lugging" around a chunky Canon digital camera!

Was attracted to the world of colour PDAs when the first decent looking colour palm, the M505 came out. After going on to the CLIE with its HiRes, I've never looked back to Palm for Pdas. Kekeke, decided to get the NX 70 instead of waiting for the NX 73/80 cuz of the great deal i got for the NX. $317 USD with a 128MB MS thrown in!

Geee... I'm 18 now... but i feel like 50 or something...

i started my addiction to high-tech gadgets when the First "data-link" ffrom microsoft came out... that was in 95 I think... which makes me...10...since then I had several eletronic organizers... but for a while I stopped looking for new stuff and just stop using them... then, about 4 years ago, I purchased a Palm III.... I used it for four months and upgraded for a Palm V and sticked to for one year of so... then I got a m505 the first colourfull pda from palm at that time.... and, since last x-mas, I've been using the NX60... it was hard at start because have a PowerBook G4 and to find Mac versions for all softwares compatible with OS 10.2, a Clie and the Palm OS 5...

And thus, I am now fully satisfied with my new pda... I am a graduated professional photographer(yes I am 18 and a professional photographer)... and I plan to go to major in cinematography... no plans for a new clie yet... i've just bought a S2Pro with 12.6 megapixels.. though I was thinking of buying a TiG4 17'... but I have no money for it...

That's it... for now...

I always enjoy this site. It's interesting to reaffirm to myself just how many people are utilizing technology. I'm 29 and in the ADD-esque family I come from a PDA is a must. I use my Clie for everything. I feel like some proverbial gunfighter when it's on my beltclip. Many individuals are still in PD-what? mode. I don't fault them but many don't fully realize the power of a PDA. These devices do almost everything at this point. I'm happy that the 14 yo and younger bracket are using PDAs. It doesn't surprise me. My sister is 14, and she has been exposed to PDAs since I first owned my Palm V with the amazing 2 mbs of RAM :-) back in '96. She will probably receive my NX when I eventually upgrade. Even my technology-hesitant father has joined the Clie family with an SJ30.

While i am {{SHUDDER}} almost 40, my son, who is 6, uses my old Palm Vx, he has a couple of games on it, but he uses it to track his Bowling scores for the junior league he is in.

He is home schooled so the tracking of school work is done by his mother and i, but he expressed an interest in trying to track it himself.

While the uses are currently limited, he DOES get use out of my old palm.

On some other points in the thread,

He was given a palm, but used allowance, xmas and birthday money from 2 years to buy his own xbox. I Bought my own first car, Computer, home, Paid for College out of my pocket , and will make sure my son has the knowldge and ability to do the same.
I will give him gifts, but i will give him responsibility and self respect as well.

And someone said that the people from the older generations do not like those of the younger....

I LOVE people under the age of 25....

Hey, I might be young, but I bought my nx70 with my own money--took it out of the welfare check one month and then bought a 128mb MS with can collection money!

I take my nx to the welfare office each month and take photos to sell on the spot printed on my hp 450ci. The printed ones sell better than the ones I had to email on my verizon express network connection with my motorola t720.(115kbs!!!)

Technology is what makes us ageless... I'm 42.

Got dialing phone at home when I was 12
Got television when I was 16. (That's when it was launched for the first time in South Africa)

Got amateur radio license at 17. Same with digital watch, which was the REAL hi-tech du jour.

First computer at 21: Sinclair ZX 81, with 8Kb (that's kilobyte) of memory and 16Kb expansion card.

While there's one 12 year old on this thread I wonder just how generally wide spread use of technology is among kids that age.

But in general I think they're much more savvy than my age group was, thirty years ago.

Sunscreen, didn't the ZX81 have only 1KB of RAM. I seem to remember programming in 1KB of space on mine. I was only 11 at the time. ;) The original spectrum only had 16KB which seemed massive after I upgraded. :D

Dags: You may be right, it might only have been 1Kb of internal memory. Sorry if I overstated the "specs". I'm a bit rusty remembering those far-off days!

Oh yes, and don't forget the recording medium: cassette tapes. And the screen was a small black and white television, as the ZX didn't support colour. The proprietary printer I had contained a roll of metallised, silver coloured paper about six inches wide. It's main purpose was to print out Basic code, as far as I remember.

16 now, no offense... but i know so people over 35 that are computer and technology challenged. Everything about technology is simple, and mostly everything is self explanitory. You see all these rich people buying all these high tech gadgets and they dont know how to use them for beans. Just the other day, i was at my local Comp USA and saw this guy bringing back his CLIE because he said it was too complicated for him to use. The employee said they have training classes that he can take for him to learn how to use it. I ALMOST LAUGHED MY *** OFF, taking a training class to use a CLIE, damn people must be "CHALLENGED" these days. They should have warning labels on these gadgets, "WARNING: NOT SUITABLE FOR PEOPLE OVER 35"

PS: This does not apply to all people over 35... i also know many Einsteins out there that dominate my computer and technological skills, but for the majority out there, stick to notepads and post-its.

I know what you mean though, a lot of my friends rely on me too much to set all their PCs and Clies up. If you play with this stuff as a kid it makes all the difference, so don't be so hard on us old folks. A lot of us didn't have the chances you youngsters have these days. Looking over the older posts on this forum, I am impressed by the young(er) folks who have saved up for their own PDAs. I teach 6, 7, 8 grade math/science, and not ONE kid has a Palm or any PDA (though the better calculators are kind of used as a PDA by some of the more... obsessive... students). Anyway, I wish everyone had one... other than the video-game-in-class issue (which can be handled pretty easily) it would be a great thing for kids to be able to record class discussions, keep organized, etc..

The kids all ogle my NX80 with KB100, but so far no one has picked up a PDA. Last year I was still using my Message Pad 2100 (Newton)! :o)

Oh yeah... and I am 34. I remember taking these huge reels of computer tape out of the dumpster behind my elementary school... before floppy disks... we used to take the reels on the public bus (Brooklyn) - we'd hand the end of the tape out of the back window and one of the kids waiting for a different bus would tie the end to a street sign. We put a stick through the middle of the reel, hold it out away from our faces, and when the bus started moving... well, when the bus hit 30, that reel was really humming!

I like how some of the older people find it so easily to come out and say how this generation is "so lazy". Really huh? Do you ever wonder why? Or do you just like pointing your fingers and telling tales of how you had to walk a mile in the snow just to get to school?

I hope you older people also understand that the generations before you probably had to work even harder for what they had than you ever have. The quality of life has improved overtime, including working condititions. Also, don't forget that YOUR generation is responsible for RAISING this generation. If you raised us as lazy slobs, then don't all rush in to claim responsibility. Some of you may say, "Oh I didn't raise my children that way." And in that case, don't worry what kind of work ethic others parents are showing their children, just worry about your own. We didn't create MTV and Ritalin, your generation did.

I really wonder how some of you who are pointing fingers would have came out if you switched shoes with this generation. My intuition tells me, not all that different. Each person has to deal with what they are, and aren't given. Whether it's opportunities or being brought up with a bad work ethic. Life isn't fair, and if they are taught the latter, then they will have to deal with that later in life. Just don't forget, that this generation is a creation of of your generation. So think about these things, and don't be so quick to point your finger next time.

Hi. Prozak

Well, if it makes you feel any better, not all "older folks" are so clueless. I am a teacher, work closely with TONS of kids of this generation, and am very positively amazed by what I see - I have great hope for our future, if the kids in my classrooms will end up being tomorrow's leaders. I think sometimes older people have a hard time seeing past the surface of kids and get all hung up on the differences that they find threatening, and miss the human being underneath the skin.

My two (off topic) cents! :o)

Eh? I read back over the thread and I haven't seen any finger pointing. You seem to be the only one pointing fingers ;) This type of technology didn't exist when the older folks were younger. New ideas and tech gadgets take faster with younger brains. They don't need to be 're-programmed' as they don't know anything different. Good for them. Who said younger people are lazy?

Apparently, I'm not the only one one who thought there were people on this thread dissing the younger generation. Or at least Cameron read the same posts I did.

Sorry to all the elders here, please don't take my post as an insult to you guys!

And for the record, I never said the younger generation wasn't lazy, but since they chose to apply that stereotype, I also made a generalization, saying that the older generation bears part of the blame. So, they shouldn't be so quick to say the younger generation is lazy without acknowledging their generations mistakes. Like I said, MTV, Ritalin, the demoralization of America through media, including, but not limited to giving the younger generation easy access to pornography, all part of the older generation. Give credit where credit is due.

I agree with the posts about my generation being lazy and pathetic, I feel embarrased about it. Oh well, cheers

Visor solo, IIIc, Nr70v, Nx70v:cool:

Another person who was able to pick up on others dissing the younger generation, or pointing fingers as I call it. You must not have read all the responses DAGS, page 4 is probably the best example though. And PDASrock, you shouldn't feel anymore embarrassed about our generation than the older generation should feel about theirs. I use to feel embarrased about our generation as well, like when I was in highschool and would see people do really stupid things. Particularly the distain they held for people in authority over them, like teachers who were trying to help them. As I've gotten older and am going through college though, I understood these types of things better. And I don't feel embarrased about my generation anymore, if anything, I have sympathy for us as a whole and the problems last generation has left us to deal with. Not that last generation didn't have any problems either. But at in the end they are responsible to deal with those problems and try to pass on the best to the next generation, and when our generation has to pass on the best as well.

Let me break it down to you though. You said you read over the posts and that no one was pointing fingers except me. I beg to differ. By pointing fingers, I meant putting down the younger generation. Page 4 is the best example of what I'm talking about. I'm not the only one that felt the younger generation was being put down, at least 2-3 other people felt the same way. My arguement is to those of the older generation who put down the younger generation. And that arguement is that the older generation bears part of the blame for the younger generation being lazy. So, the older generation should acknowledge these faults when they put down the younger generation. The way it is, the older generation puts the fault of the younger generation being lazy entirely on them, and that is not the case. Give credit where credit is due.

Prozak,

I don't realy feel that anyone is really trying to come down on the younger generation, or at least not anymore than we come down on the older generation. We make fun of them for not understanding computers/technology, they make fun of us for being unruly and out of control. I have no problem with either. I still think that my generation(mainly 14-20) is irresponsible and most teens need to sit back and THINK a little more. I wonder, for example, how so many teens can go around not having any sort of notion of where they came from. I can respect atheists, agnostics, or people of different faiths(I am a Christian), but so many teens and even some older people never think about this, even thought it is an extremely important issue.

Hmm, I guess it depends a lot on who you know. I'm not saying everyone in my generation is immature, just a lot. I think a lot of them need to find out how to have fun while being at least somewhat mature. For example, I drive fast, play basketball, play FPS video games, and hang out with my friends playing loud music(yes, VERY LOUD), but I am still able to be serious when it is necissary, some guys I know couldn't be serious if they hit somebody with their car. But I agree there are lots of immature adults too.
