I am having some problems putting files on a NX70 and am looking from some help. I have several MP3 files that I would like to put on a variety of memory sticks to listen to. Some are old time radio programs recorded at 24 & 30 kps. Some are ripped audio books at 48kbps. I have tried using SonicStage to input/import them and I keep getting messages that either that file type isn't supported, or I get corrupted file/copyright protection not supported. I have also gotten a message saying that copyright information is not present on the files. I have been using both the white ATRAC sticks and the purple non-ATRAC ones. I have also tried dragging and dropping from the MS Export/Import program, no luck. Is there some technical reason about the bit rates that could be causing problems?

Does anyone know of a simple way to accomplish what I am trying to do. I am looking to use these audio files when I walk in the mornings, and since I paid so much for the Clie, I thought this would be easier than buying another memory stick MP3 player.

I think your bit rate is too low, but I know little about that, so others can chime in. I thought I remember hearing that it should be 96kbps, though.

As for the method of getting them on the Clie, you don't want to use SonicStage. AFAIK, you only want to use that if you're trying to make ATRAC files. If they're already in MP3 format, just use MSImport to put them on your Clie, placing them in the /Palm/Programs/Msaudio folder.

I wondered about that, but in the settings for the ATRAC in Sonic Stage, it gave me the option of either 132 or 64, and they called it ATRAC Pro. I thought there might be another program that would work.

I'm very new to MP3s, and I found a freeware app called MusicMatch Jukebox that I use to rip MP3s off of my CDs. It's fairly easy to setup to get the appropriate bit rates. I've done everything at 96kbps and they've all played great on my NR and now on my NX.

I seem to remember hearing that ATRAC Pro wasn't compatible with the Clies. Only the regular ATRAC3.

Well, the software I used to install it with is what came with the Clie. Can't think of why they would ship incompatable software.

Okay, you need to understand that Sony keeps trying to push it's proprietary ATRAC3 music format. Most users avoid it like the plague, as it's cumbersome, more expensive, and it gives Sony more control. Sony was forced to half-heartedly support the MP3 format, since no one was buying the other.

For MP3's all you need is the purple Memory Sticks. Use Music Match or some other user friendly MP3 application. Typically on the Sony the following specs get you going:

No MP3 Pro

No VBR

44.1KHz sampling rate

96kbps and higher bit rate

No file protection set to on.

How to convert the files is something someone else will have to help you with.

If you want frustration, misery, and a lighter wallet, then stick with Sonic Stage:D

My next dumb question, is the audio player on the Clie what I use to playback MP3s, or is there another one that I need to install? I don't want to appear like a dunce, but I have Music Match installed (I use it to convert the bit rate of files). But do files created there play on the Clie using audio player?

Yea, you use the built-in Audioplayer. You just have to make sure the MP3's are in the /PALM/Programs/MSAudio folder on your Memory Stick.

Interesting scenario on my MP3 issues. I have copies of the Harry Potter novels on audiobook, both the UK and US editions. I ripped them to 32kbps to save space on my hard drive. When I put the US version on my Clie (by simply copying to the \MSAUDIO folder, it plays fine using audio player. When I try the same with the UK version, I get an error message when I try playing it that says this file format is not supported. When I try importing it via SonicStage, I get an error when it trys to optimize it. So I converted the UK version to 96kbps, and now SonicStage imports it just fine.

Color me confused??

Colored all over. Me too. Sometimes things are like that. I've never used SonicStage. I just use the direct connect MSExport.
You select MSImport on your Clie and open up MSExport on your desktop, then just drag the mp3 file right on over to MSExport. Click the Install button on the lower right side of the MSExport window to transfer the files. It should go to the /PALM/Programs/MSAudio folder like cbulock said. Go to the default audio player that came installed on the clie. You should see all your mp3's there.
As previously noted, ATRAC works with the special, more expensive memory stick, not the regular purple ones. Use mp3's. I use CDex to convert mp3's and it seems to do the job.

Use Music match and record from analog to digital and then you can use the less expensive purple MS's

I have an NZ-90 I was interested in converting the many voice recordings and listening to more audio books, in particular using the background audio playing feature of the audio player (so you can use the PDA calendar etc without interrupting). A bit behind the game I got a CF card driver for it, and a 4GB card so I can play a boatload of songs.

The audio player only supports things in the first directory /MSAudio (not subdirectories) and only a single playlist which blows chunks. I was thinking they were were intending this for where Memory Sticks were a single album, thus swapping sticks were how you'd change things. But both of these make it virtually impossible to use it for extended playlists (get an Ipod)

Basics: (I was using dbpoweramp for conversion)

CBR works, VBR doesn't
44.1khz seems required regardless of mono/stereo. 22khz doesnt
stereo or mono both work (didn't try joint stereo)
Copy Protection or no both work

For Voice Memos/Recordings, (which are 22khz) depending on background noise, 44khz, mono, 64kbs seems to work well and not be grating.

I'm looking into this for use with better mp3 software AeroPlayer, PocketTunes, MMPlayer
