View Full Version : PEG-SJ20/U won't see Memory Stick

Bought the PDA used on ebay. Works fine, except it won't see the 128 MB standard Memory Stick (w/ Magic Gate) that I also bought on ebay, nor the new one I bought tonight at Best Buy.
It actually seems to know it's there, cuz in Card Info it shows a little MS icon after the word "Card:" and the drop-down arrow (maybe a mechanical sensor?), but all the other info is blank. If I try to format it, it tells me "this card cannot be formatted".
In MS Gate it says "no memory stick" near the top, and if I try to format it there (Options menu), it says "check the memory stick media". Same warning if I try to look at "Media Information" on the Options menu or do other operations in MS Gate.
It seems like some kind of issue with the Clie, but I can't find anything on-line about such things. Do the PDA's card reader contacts become worn over time? Is there some other Clie-specific issue that I can check on (and fix)?
Thanks for anyone's help. We bought this Clie so that my wife could put some of her nursing school books on it to reference in class, and it's causing a lot of distress. :(

Welcome to 1src!
Have you tried a soft reset (tap the reset button) or hard reset (tap the soft reset button while holding the power button, release on Palm Powered screen, press up)?

Hey, thanks! Yes, I've tried soft and hard resets, both with the MS in and with the MS out. No dice.
Other thoughts?
Off to bed. I'll check in tomorrow.
Thanks. :)

Sounds like a dead MS slot. Contact the person who you bought it from, then you can contact Chris Short (PM me for his eMail)

Are you sure that you are not using a memory stick pro?

I am having the same problem; I came onto the boards to see if I could get info. :p
A little different set up tho: I'm using 256MB SanDisk Memory Stick Pro Duo with adapter in my old Clie s360. I used this Stick in my TH55 but then I got a 1GB Stick for it. I'm giving the s360 to my nephew and I thought I'd give him the 256MB Stick as well. (Never used a Memory Stick with it before.)
Before I put it in the s360 I deleted all the files from the Stick using Explorer on my computer. I think I maybe deleted some files I should not have? But I don't know how to reformat the Stick. (Tried the Format command in MSGate after DaveLab mentioned it, but I got the same response: "check the memory stick media".)
Any help appreciated! Robin

AFAIK, you cannot use any Memory Stick Pros in the older Clies (basically anything before the OS5 Clies... anything including and before the SJ33).
You can only use the older plain memory sticks. The largest was the 128x2 memory stick select.

On a similar thread, I have an old ms card reader. The magic gate ms by lexar (256k) won't read on the reader by dazzle. Oh well, card readers are cheap, I better buy one of those 10-1 card readers to use for both of my palm and sony devices.
I just let out my clie s-360 , the old obselete methods used in that machine just confused the heck out of me. Shame on you for passing that machine on to a future palm user. He might get addicted to Graffiti one....

DaveLab: are the Memory Sticks write protected ? (they should have a little sliding window like floppy discs)
