Here is a custom rom for your TX
removed are: Addit, the "jake coco" video from media, launcher backrounds
added are: netfront, filez, drive move, voice memo, better sample backgrounds
install instructions:
download THIS (http://www.palmpowerups.com/file/TX2.ROM.zip?uniq=56)
extract it to card directly
backup TX (NVBackup, not anything else)
hard reset TX (to make sure of no conflicts with flasher app, don't do this if you're feeling lucky)
insert card
click "TX updater"
plug in power
click "proceed"
wait through 4 resets
restore from backup
enjoy
To answer the questions beforehand:
Q: tools?
A: no i did not use any off the shelf tools. I wrote all tools i used to accoomplish this. :-)
Q: dangerous?
A: this does not edit the full rom, just a part of it
Q: can you {include,remove} $APP?
A: Only if you can be very convincing
Alright, I talked to Dmitry during this beast's creation, so I'm first in line to test it. Well, here goes nothing.
Edit: I like my TX2.
Here's my notes:
go
copying update files
reset...
and back on

Q: What do you gain by doing this?
Q: Any way to just remove the files without adding anything?
Thanks

So this just takes a few things out of ROM and adds a few more. Why didn't you remove Quick Tour? I think I'll be brave and give it a go.

Disregard last msg. You CHEEKY MONKEY, you fixed my TX!!! Wow, I am impressed. What a great bit of coding you did.
Why the hell aren't you working for Palm, Palmsource, PAlmone, etc, etc...
Thanks for the great programs you make :)

I'm going to install next version, so some little bugs are squeezed.

I followed the instructions and they worked fine:
Notes:
During selective restore I had soft resets and cleared them by not restoring anything that had
NF3
HRFont
McFile in it.
Drive Mode did not work as expected. The PC did not recognize the drive, it would not appear on the list of avaialble drives on my PC (WIN XP updated)
When he said extract to card directly, do not select Palm/Launcher, WinZip put it directly in Palm/Launcher and the first time, I tried I had a Palm/Launcher/Palm/Launcher folder that contained the TXUpdater files.
"Web" still appeared and when I tapped it, Blazer launched. Is that expected or did I do something wrong?
Great Effort and results, Dmitry!
wow, this is just too good to be true.... what wonderful news..
Great going dmitrygr!
I read somewhere on another forum that (custom crafted ROM) where removing unnecessary OEM apps from ROM allows you gain extra cache space on NVFS (RAM) therefore will give users slightly more DB Cache storage, resulting in less flooding on DBcache, enhancing the unit. Is this somewhat similar?
Let me guess, NetFront (the Latest version 3.1?)
BTW, I have CJKOS on my TX by default, will this TX2 ROM wipe it out? Coz I do use it to view some Chinese documents though I don't use it for input.
removing the QuickTour is also a good idea. ;)

Question... will this void my warrenty? I still have to send my buggy TX to Palm.
Also, is the NetFront VZ version or TH version? Can someone check? If its 2.0.22, can you use the VZ version Dmitry, its the most up-to-date version for Palm OS and has Carriage return support.

heh, I've been thinking yesterday to ask You about custom ROM for TX - mainly for freeing memory for DBcache... Great job!
Only few questions:
1. Can I still run Blazer, not only NetFront?
2. How can I bring back original ROM?
3. Is it possible to prepare custom ROM by myself (i.e. I don't need zLauncher, quickTour, Expenses, etc.)?

3. i will not be releasing my tools at this time, possibly later (ZL is not nicluded in this rom)

A very good job ;-)
You're the one : works perfectly on my french TX
And I'm accord with others to remove :
* Welcome visit
* Maybe Blazer ??
and why not put on the custom ROM :
* Meminfo

I think those apps are essential....great and free ;-)

excuse me, but can someone tell me the advantages of Netfront over Blazer? I would be grateful! :)

Wow, this is great news...for you TX-owners! ;-)
I'm sure you are allready working your butt of, Dmitrygr, but do you think it is possible to somehow do this for the LifeDrive??
I don't need anything new in the ROM, but Expenses (does ANYBODY ever use that??), CardInfo, Solitaire, WorldClock and some other are 'deletable' for me.
Hm, come to think of it, would a JackSprat-like app for NVFS-Palms be possible??
Just an app to delete stuff you don't want from ROM.
I think many people are more than willing to pay for that...! I would be...

and why not put on the custom ROM :

meminfo is useless, offlush is not an app i like (there is never a need to flush cache on TX. it is flushed on any allocation from DB cache that fails initially, so this app is useless by definition on a TX), tcpmp is too big (i'd need to remove netfront to fit it), and nvbackup needs the card to function so why not keep it on the abovementioned card anyways?

I am always surprised when I read posts like this...
Don't get me wrong, I am NOT trying to ridicule you, but why are people so afraid of a hard reset??
I try out a lot of -sometimes possibly 'dangerous' experimental- software, and have experienced a LOT of hard resets because of that, but ofcourse I ALLWAYS make sure to make a good backup beforehand.
Please take note that a simple Hotsync is NOT a good backup (lot's of files and preferences don't actually get restored with a Hotsync after a hard reset!), but there are a lot of good apps that make a backup to your card, and after a hard reset you can restore and EVERYTHING is exactly the same as before.
I have NVBackup make a automatic backup every night at 5 o'clock -even I should be asleep then- and allways before I test something I update that backup, that way I have nothing to fear.
So, again, what is the problem lots of people seem to have with the occasional hard reset?? Please enlighten me... :-/
imiganai
06-18-2006, 08:37 PM
It's not "afraid" (backupbuddy has restored more or less OK for me on hard resets before), but rather there isn't quite enough benefit to warrant the time. That said, when I said I'd probably break down at some point, I meant I'd go ahead with the installation anyway just because it is, of course, awesome.

Success here also, although just like everybody has said, Drive Mode is not working. I installed the version that I have, overwriting the 3 files that you had installed, and it works fine.
Voice memo is a bit too much of a tease!!
If I was away from home and the SD card broke, the only thing that I would miss would be changing the find button to the home button. But if I was away from home and the SD card broke, my TX would just not be the same, as I'd have no music and no way to load other programs that I wouldn't even ask you to put into rom.
ok well, any more sucess reports?

Hi dmitrygr,
It's a wonderful tool to custom TX rom. I believed this the most feasible way to refine TX's performance and to release DBcache as each user could be able to customize what he/she really needs in the rom. Ideally, I expect it would be able to selectively install applications or files into rom.
Hope your works goes well!!

Hi All,
Now I may of mist it in the quick fire posts but can you reverse the procedure? I'm always chopping a the bit to flash, burn, edit, hack the standard ROM (my O2 xda mini was great to hack).
BUT I always like the comfort factor that it can be reversed.
UPDATE
Please ignore, answered in post #19 with some doubt, I’m trying the Sony update first then bitting the bullet.

Hi Deuse, I asked for that too, it would be so great to be able to get rid of some of the stuff in ROM. Later today I'llstart a thread about this, where other members can tell if they are interested too. And then let's hope Dmitrygr finds the time to look in to it... :-)

Hi there.
I've tried the update and it works for me. Like everybody, the drive mode is not working for me too. The drive did not appear under windows explorer but, it shows a USB Mass Storage Device attached under my USB host controller when I examine it under Device Manager.
I would certainly prefer to customize the ROM based on my own needs rather then using a generic set. Perhaps dmitrygr can release a version like this in future. Great work anyway !

OK I bit the bullet and flashed the ROM.
All worked well as described.
Difference List
1. Old backgrounds removed (Good)
2. New default images installed (Tree's)
3. Doc2Go default files removed (Good)
4. Default Music Files Removed (Good)
5. Drive Mod didn't work. (Can some one point me to the replacement files).
6. Voice Memo not needy be me (I can live with it)
7. FileZ a good addition. (Resco Explorer would be good but licence issues, maybe if the tolls could be released I could have a hack)
8. NetFront V2.0.22 a good addition. (Need to confirm if this is the VZ issue).
9. Increased Storage room on the device
Changes I would make to suit my needs.
a. Remove Quick Tour
b. Fix "Drive Mod"
c. Remove 1 of the browsers but not sure which one yet.
d. Add a Bluetooth "Drive Mod"
e. Add TCPMP Media Player.
f. Remove Voice Memo.
Attached is a little spreadsheet of the changes.

Dmitry, what about making A ROM that has "NOTHING" in it! only things that it must have for the palm to function, and all things that you cannot install manually,
But all other stuff? whoever needs them can install them to the RAM,
Maby like this there will be no more requests on this thread? :-)
ok i am uploading a version with working drivemode.
PS: GRRR. what does one need to do to get onto 1src front page?
(L.E.M. made it and tx rom didn't? color me surprised []/offended[])
It could be that the inclusion of unlicensed or questionably licensed sofware in your rom: (drivemode - unless you wrote this yourself, voice memo and netfront) make it too questionable for front page inclusion? Dump the unlicensed software and your mod should get the recognition it deserves!
Kudos for your programming ability, but you really ought to stop dancing in the lightning when it comes to software licensing.
The inclusion of netfront, drivemode and voicememo in a TX ROM are a lot like standing knee deep in salt water on a grounded copper plate while holding a 9 iron above your head on a golf course in a lightning storm.

Well I took the plunge and other than Resco Backup not seeing my backup sets, everything went well. I'm a little miffed about this. Thankfully NVBackup saved my butt. Does anyone know why my backup sets would not show up?
Anyway, well done, Dimitry!
I know this is already starting to sound too much like work with all of the requests, but I am wondering if you can add some of your own freeware apps (like brightness fix and perhaps even grafitti 1.99), as well as ButtonsEx.

Wild Celt,
Hello again! I wonder, when you said it doesn't see RescoBackups, does that mean the old ones, or even ones that you tried to make under the new ROM?
What version of RBackup are you using? I'm using 1.35.4
While Dmitry seems to have made a wonderful new app (thanks Dmitry, I really miss jack sprat & flash fm my T3).
However, it would feel almost like walking in public without my pants on - not to have access to my backups! What if I had a major crash? I even have old backups, just in case; in the past it has helped - had a database file that was corrupt & only an older version was good - even backups don't solve everything.
TIA,
Eli

I keep a rotation of three backup sets. I tried to restore the backup set that I created just before hard resetting. Upon install of the TX2 ROM, none of my backup sets showed up. I have a hard time believing they are linked to the actual ROM, but I don't know of any other explanation. I didn't try a new backup with the new ROM for fear of overwriting any backups. After I did a selective restore with NVBackup (which wasn't current), my Resco Backup sets appeared. I did a "diff" restore to restore the files that had changed since my last NVBackup, er, backup. It still missed a few files, but it was manageable. Since the multiple restore, I am able to backup using both programs without incident.
I've been doing a bit of searching and could not find any info to help with this issue. I was using 1.35.3 at the time, but I just saw I missed an update and have since installed 1.35.4.

I too took the plunge this morning :) Followed the directions in post #1 and everything went off without a hitch - I was even able to save my bookmarks for NetFront during the selective restore.
Drive Mode works great!! Wish I would have know this was going to be available ... could have saved me ~$25 (buying CardReader and CardExportII) or I could have just given the money to you :p Just wondering though - I've read that on the T5 Drive Mode is supposed to show both the ROM and the Card as 2 separate drives on the PC... I only see the card. Not that it's a big deal.
It's nice to have NF and Filez in RAM. I'm not crazy about the background pictures, they're a little dark for my tastes (but I know that I'm probably among a minority here). I can add my own images so no big deal.
Thanks for all your hard work - I'm sure this was no easy task. I appreciate you sharing this with us.
@ Wild Celt - I see my RBackup files - however, I've already restored with NVBackup and didn't check to see if RB was working before the restore.

I can't speak with 100% absolute certainty, but the drive mode on the T5 was for the SD card and the portion of flashROM on the device that acted like a card (the 155MB that was essentially an internal SD card). The T|X doesn't have that kind of memory arrangement (all of it is the "RAM") which is probably why you don't see the ROM (because technically it's not there). I couldn't see the "RAM" portion of the device on the T5, either.

I just hard reset again, just for funsies. I created backups with both NVBackup 1.12 and RescoBackup 1.35.4 before hard resetting (with TX2 installed). As long as you OWN a CLIE device as well as any PalmOne deivce you are LICENSED to use all included apps. I checked...
So you need to own BOTH a Clie and a Palmone device? How about a ROM version that doesn't bring along any licensing baggage. IE, a Palmone only version that omits netfront since I never owned a clie.
I wouldn't mind loading netfront on sd card just to test it alongside blazer but I wouldn't want it in my ROM image as I never owned a Clie. I suppose I could get one from Ebay if I really liked Netfront, but I'd much rather get Netfront from Access. What is very puzzling is that while Access has purchased Palmos, they aren't offering to sell a Palmos version of Netfront, only pocket pc. Geez.
I figured I might as well weigh in with some apps I consider to be "essential":
*BrightnessFixTX
DA Launcher
Drive Mode (already included)
Filez (already included)
*Handedness
HandyShopper
*HomeWithFind (with permission)
*LaunchThis! (with permission)
NetFront/MaxX (already included)
*NoBatteryDialog
NVBackup (with permission from Alex)
Obfuscate
PalmPDF (with permission from Henk)
*PowerClip
*ScrollBar5
SMBMate
*TX Security Update
WatchMaker
I'd also remove:
AddIt (already removed)
Blazer (if it's not there, nobody'd really miss it)
Dialer
Quick Tour
SMS
Personally I'd also remove Docs2Go, Expense and VersaMail, but I assume many people wouldn't.
The starred entries are ones that fix deficiencies with the current TX OS, and don't really have a downside if installed.

I used to use this, but found that if I want to enable the better implementation of home button with a popup menu that is available in myKbd, I had to delete HWF.So there might be a problem for all us myKbd users who like that feature enabled. The myKbd version is much closer to mcphling, with favorites, etc.

My dreamrom would be something like this:
Starting with the most stripped version possible, adding the following apps.
-Modified version of palm's brightness setting, so no separate brightness app.
-Getdeblu
-UDMH
-Warpspeed
-Uncache with all good settings for the apps in ROM
-Drive Mode
-HSNSwitch
-Resco Explorer
-PowerClip
-SMBMate
-PalmPDF
-Netfront
-NVBackup
-TCPMP with AAC and AVC codec
-no vibrating mods or voicerecorders, nobody has these...

I am following with much interest this discussion and the development of the TXRom file. For myself I would like a TXRom with no apps or tweaks included, so that I could then add anything I wanted to RAM.
I am still a bit afraid of trying this as my TX is still under warranty and frankly, is running extremely well.
I'm wondering if Dmitry might post the latest version of NetFront (2.0.2?) for those of us like myself. Assuming there are others like myself following this thread!

Well looking at this thread, I would say the best path would be to go with the most streamlined rom possible, removing absolutely everything except what is essential to the use of the palm, and of course then everyone could add exactly what they like. Personally I like and use D2G, Blazer, and VersaMail, but all of those could be added on as each individual see's fit for their personal uses, as well as everything else such as netfront and udmh, etc etc. Though at this moment I see no reason to put this new rom on my PDA, it's running quite smooth as it is at the moment (Though the WPA update is inticing), but at the same time I don't need it. Hey Dimtyr, what about modifieing the ROM that when it crashes it shows an error message instead of just going straight into a soft reset? That alone would make me want to install it though. Just my thoughts on it.
First of all I would like to thank Dmitry. Another great job, cheers mate.
The results from the upgrade on my TX are great. Now drive mode works fine, netfront is ok and backup with RBackup worked perfect.
Reading the thread I see many people asking for different programs, this of course can't happen, even though I also have a list with favorite apps :)
I think the new ROM at the moment is as generic as it should be. For example I want Blazer and Versamail. The key here I believe is to remove apps that do nothing, as Dmitry did already with Addit and just add some hacks/useful programs that are free.

One thing that is important:
The custom rom does not change DBcache ammount. I read some information about making custom rom for Treo - just for freeing memory for DBcache.
On T|X, total ammount of DBcache is still 13119KB (as MemoryInfo says).
Some differences are in free DBcache, on my device, after flushing it by MemoryInfo it is:
- 12393KB - with Custom ROM
- 11494KB - without Custom ROM (after WiFi enterprise update)
- 11954KB - without Custom ROM and with UnCache enabled
But, there is a question, if it is worth to change ROM just for few KB?
Applications that stay after hard reset for me are not enough - I always have SD Card inserted in Palm (I use navigation software, so I need much storage memory for maps), and backup with a copy of resco explorer on card is not a problem for me.
So now I stay with Palm Enterprise Update (for possible warranty reasons), But If if Custom Rom would make more space for DBcache, I could install it.
My dream set of application is as follows:
Original ROM -
Without:
- QuickTour
- Addit
- Expenses
- Solitaire (Can be, if removing will make more space, can be not)
- Media and PocketTunes (hardly ever use them, esp. PTunes)
With:
+ NetFront (as alternative for Blazer, but I like Blazer to stay)
+ DriveMode (but, the best way would be something like CardReader, which can be used in background mode)
+ VoiceMemo (why not, but at the present I don't have any mic)
The rest of software I would like to see is unfortunately paid (unCache, RescoExplorer, PiLoc - essential for me, etc.)

This is a bit off topic. I am not installing the TX2. But I did install the NF installer a while ago. However, as soon as I tap on the NF icon, my TX crashes. The first time I did that, I simply deleted all NF*.* files, rebooted and reinstalled. It worked fine. But it happened again. This time, the deletions and reinstallation did not eliminate the reset. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening.

O come on, as if Palm is coming to your house to check whether you own a clié...
That never was the issue for me. I would have no problem "borrowing" netfront to see if it is better than blazer. But if I ended up liking it, I should be offered a legal option for keeping it on my TX without resorting to buying a used clie off ebay.
There are two problems here. First, Access stubbornly refuses to sell their flagship browser product directly to end users of their newly purchased flagship OS. Second, dmitry has made netfront available to many users who don't have a legal right to use it.
I have seen many of the posts here encourage him to keep netfront in the ROM image, while others have laundry lists of things to add or delete. The real answer is some sort of ROM tool that lets us build a TX rom image of our own liking.

I could not agree with you more. I think trying to come up with ROM image that *everyone* loves is very difficult task, if not impossible. Secondary, there are applications we *buy* and want to keep in ROM. Dmitry can not put those apps in ROM without infringing copyrights. Thirdly, there is a special want like mine. I want to store Japanese font resources in ROM (about 2Mbyte) I am sure I don't need any language resources such as French, German,Spanish or Italian. Eliminating these resources in ROm will give me space for Japanese in ROM with some changes. I know a author of Japanese extention was succssful of doing just that for treo, using treo 650 Rom tool and was able to regain a good amount of DBcache. (this is the main reason if I want to hack Rom image)
If Dmitry can release some kind of ROM tool which is idiot proof (ie., device will always have means of being re-flashed. Flashing A device sometimes leave the device brain-dead due to not able to boot up to the point it can be flashed again), then I guess he does not need to listen to the endless "requests" (of course he does not need to listen to any of those including this one, even now  )

dmitrygr, I wonder if it is possible to build a " pure rom" without any pre-installed applications beforehand? for users like us to use TX with enough DBcache and get rid of softwares like cjkos pocket tunes and apps like that.
And in my opinion the "pure rom" should:
1,remove CJKOS( for asian users)
2,remove the default calculator
3,remove quick tour
4,remove document to go
5,remove expense
6,remove default notepad
7, remove solitare
8,remove versamail
9, remove blazer
10,remove pockettunes
Since TX has enough ram for installation, a "pure rom" of it may offer as much as DBcache possible and the most possibilities for most users to custom their own handles.
Is that possible?:) Please do us a favor

Dmitry & All,
I had a very strange experience. I put my SanDisk UltraII 1Gb card into my pc's media slot, expanded the files into the card's /Palm/Launcher directory. When I got to the point of tapping on TX updater icon, I got a msg telling me that a file was missing. Believing that it might be related to apps I've got on the card; I used an old 256Mb sd card. I removed any files in the /launcher directory on 2nd card & expanded the zip file into it. This time I saw 2 icons; one was TX updater & one was ROM Updater.
Feeling lucky, I decided to go ahead & try tapping on the ROM Updater icon & I got a very fast series of msgs rolling down the screen & got only one reboot.
Rbackup 1.35.4 worked & saw my prev backup sets just fine (in 1st attempt to update I had a copy of Rbackup in the Palm/Launcher dir, along w/a lot of other stuff).
I got a msg fm Maxx & upon re-install fm backup & reset, I saw it again; but not after any further resets (soft).
Upon checking, I didn't seem to get Filez - something I like a lot. I restored it fm backup of my prev d/l'ed version & opened it - to see if there would be a little icon next to Filez's name in the list to indicate it was in ROM & I was able to delete it.
What is with that?
Drive mode works just fine. Now I don't have to remove sd card to do an app install manually (doing it w/hotsync is awfully slow)!
I still have VersaMail & Blazer, Dialer, & SMS.
I did have one scare when testing my apps - SuperSlyder a great game fm Astraware opened & after returning to 'current' game, & tapping on up navigate button I got a crash that CrashPro didn't even register. Fortunately, it was caused by UDMH not having a special setting for it - the game is on my SD card, so I just added it to UDMH list & checked off skip quit & it worked fine again.
FYI, I copied the app that Dmitry said had a new drive mode that works (it did); & the overflow files were dated 6/20, TXupdater was 6/18 & ROMUpdater was dated 2/17.
So far, so good.
Keep up the good work Dmitry. Would it be possible to come up w/an app to delete stuff fm ROM? if you can find the time; of course!
All the best,
Eli

I tried 3 times your 2. update. The Wifi-Symbol didn't come again. But then I started NV-Restore and it appeared. Quick Tour also appeared, but I could delete it, it was only in RAM. Now everything seems to work.
Again thank you, Dmitry.
But what shall I do, when I, for example, sell the TX and make a Hard Reset?

Ok, I tried to do install this, and did as it was written in the first post. I works, but when I do the restore my TX became exactly as it was before the ROM-update, am I suppose to do a special kind of restore? Could be that I am from Sweden or that I am not that experiensed with Palm that causes my problem, or maybe I´m just stupid.

To Dmitry, about those people with the Wi-Fi upgrade from Palm Inc.
you said that they should:
1) Install the updated WPA ROM
2) Take a backup
3) Install your TX2 ROM
4) Restore
But you also said somewhere on this thread that when you reinstall after your TX2.ROM upgrade you should NOT reinstall all files that contain in the name: "wifi", "air", or "sam",
Is it the same with those people with the Wi-Fi upgrade from Palm Inc.?!
I'm not sure!

I'm not sure!
The first time I did it using NVBackup I restored everything and my TX was like it had the original ROM !!!!!
The second time I didn't restore names starting with "air" and "sam", but I DID restore those with "wifi" since otherwise it wouldn't restore the wifi update. Then it worked fine!

Is it only files with the word "wifi" in it, that you need for the wifi?
"AIR" and "SAM" are nothing to do with this?
Also, there is one file that the creator is "wifi", but in its name it doesn't have wifi, whats with this file?

Very interesting, this. NetFront in ROM would indeed be very nice. I have one question though:
I've got TomTom Navigator 5 installed on my TX, wich is locked to my device with a some device code. Because of that, I'm a little hesitant to flash my ROM with this. Won't it change this device code TomTom has locked itself to?
Normally, I'm not so concerned with experimenting. But TomTom was just a little too expensive to risk being stuck with a void lisence.
If anyone has any insights in this, I'd be more than happy to hear them.

After installing the second release of TX2-ROM (with DriveMode supposed to be fixed), I wondered, why it still didn't work.
After thinking about it for a minute, I tried again and excluded all DriveMode-DBs from being restored from my backup and voila, it works right now.
Since I have no real idea which files have changed from one release to the next, Dimitry, could you please provide a list of updated DBs that have to be excluded from being restored (just like the WiFi, Air and whatever DBs in your first post) upon release of a new ROM-update?
Besides that, thanks a lot for the work you did...
Keep on doing such great things!

Hi Dimitry,
It seems that PalmOne's WPA update is the only way to restore back the original TX ROM. What if going to try your TX ROM2 without such update?
Also, I think a "pure" ROM with less application sounds better as users are able to selectively install applications to RAM and more cache is released accordingly.
Thanks for your works again.

more cache is released accordingly. Is that true on a T|X too? (less uncompressed ROM => more DBCache?)

so i read the WHOLE thread (some pages not to careful), and i didn't find something like my question, and tha is:
Is there any way to have like a self-made ROM? I mean, to let the user decide what to take from the rom and what to add? Say, i want to leave addit *just an example* (which i believe is already gone), but i want to delte calendar and have agendus pro (if i own it).
Is that possible?
sry if it was asked b4 but to read 10 pages of thread was kind of ... i was tired to read... sry [edit] now i see my post starts a new page :/[edit]
The answer to that was at the beginning of the thread...
Here is a custom rom for your TX
removed are: Addit, the "jake coco" video from media, launcher backrounds
added are: netfront, filez, drive move, voice memo, better sample backgrounds
install instructions:
download THIS (http://www.palmpowerups.com/file/TX2.ROM.zip?uniq=56)
extract it to card directly
backup TX (NVBackup, not anything else)
hard reset TX (to make sure of no conflicts with flasher app, don't do this if you're feeling lucky)
insert card
click "TX updater"
plug in power
click "proceed"
wait through 4 resets
restore from backup
enjoy
To answer the questions beforehand:
Q: tools?
A: no i did not use any off the shelf tools. I wrote all tools i used to accoomplish this. :-)
Q: dangerous?
A: this does not edit the full rom, just a part of it
Q: can you {include,remove} $APP?
A: Only if you can be very convincing
The clearer answer is on page 2:
heh, I've been thinking yesterday to ask You about custom ROM for TX - mainly for freeing memory for DBcache... Great job!
Only few questions:
1. Can I still run Blazer, not only NetFront?
2. How can I bring back original ROM?
3. Is it possible to prepare custom ROM by myself (i.e. I don't need zLauncher, etc.)?
1. sure
2. no way i know of. but the WPA upgrade will bring it back bc it includes a copy
3. i will not be releasing my tools at this time, possibly later (ZL is not nicluded in this rom)

Well, finding that my TX is quickly becoming unstable again (Allmost 99% of all my crashes and resets are WIFI Related, usually during the initialization phase), I don't know why this is, but ANY program, including clicking directly on the WIFI icon and clicking Connect randomly causes a reset, doesn't matter if it is Netfront, Blazer, Versamail, upIRC, etc, there is random resetting with WIFI. Seeing as a hardreset is now needed yet again, I am going to install the ROM and see how that goes :) I will report back on how it all goes.

Yesterday I tried your new custom ROM. Everything worked fine. Today I tried the revised version (without Quick-Tour) and this one didn't give me the symbol for wifi in Taskscreen back. I was very much confused about it. Then I went back to your first TX-Update. This works again. Is there anything wrong about the second edition?
Thank you for your good work.
Cheers!
You might want to try a hard reset (without erasing) to get that fixed.
Happened on mine where suddenly I had no WiFi icon and it would soft reset after every hot sync. I did the hard reset and everything has been fine since.
Must have been a lingering memeory thing or bit of program running somewhere in the background that was fing with it...

here another happy user.
I tried this ROM. I was "feeling lucky" with the flash app so there was no need to do a hard reset before. I just did my NVBackup and then ran the app; twice ofcourse, cuz the first time hanged somehow. Everything was working fine after the reset, so i recovered my backup and voila!
now just a question, i was having troubles with Netfront and i thought that this update would clean that, but nope. It it is rare cuz i had netfront before i needed a Hard reset couple of weeks ago, and it was working perfect! After the hard reset, it hangs for a while and then a dialog appears saying " -Error- Insuffiecient memory. Terminate and restart NetFront.", ok and it continues like that unless i do a reset and start it soon after the reset, just like blazer o.O... any ideas of what that might be?

Well, I have installed Dmitry's ROM on top of the Wi-fi upgrade and it all seems fine (and v useful - thanks D).
I did cheat and combine it with a major reinstall of my software (to include uninstall manager) so in the end I didn't in fact restore from the NVbackup I made.
I note that when I *did* try to use the NVbackup that lots of crap from ROM that had been loaded into RAM got restored and so it looked as though the removal parts of the upgrade didn't work. I don't know exactly what you should and shouldn't restore from NVbackup - it seems to be a problem if one does the upgrade as Dmitry suggests.

Just did the upgrade at lunch time. No issues on the flash.
My only comments are:
1) The new desktop backgrounds are way too dark for my tastes... I personally wouldn't have them in the ROM... I'm one of the few people who actually liked the Palm included backgrounds.
2) I would dump Documents to GO and pTunes from the Custom Rom... newer versions out there anyways if people want them.
3) There are a few apps that in my "dream ROM" wouldn't be needed such as Expense, Media and DriveMode (don't use either) but I'm fine with them there.
WiFI icon:
When I did a NVBackup restore, the WiFI icon did disappear so I'm guessing I restored a file I shouldn't have.... I'm guessing the "WiFI" files.
I appreciate the work you have done on the TX2. ;-)

Try configuring a wirelss network. If it offers you the possibility of WPA then the wireless is still there.
It says WPA-PSK.
But it should (according to Palm) show me a list of options (Enterprise, Private and another 1). The WiFi prgm version is 4.0, which should be 4.1.
And I cannot get the update working
I have some problems with prgm like drivemode and cardreader too.
Never had a problem like this with cardreader. (interefere with BackupMan, but that is another story).
Should I do something special, adding some prgms to uncache? Or do I have the bad luck to discover a glitch in the ROM?

Maybe you can spot any differences to what you currently have on your palm.

When I checked with Resco Explorer, the files (Netfront, MaxX, Filez) are in RAM, not in ROM! They are marked copy protected and resources db. the only way I'm aware of is to purchase the Palm TX Wifi Update http://www.palm.com/us/software/esu/ This includes a copy of the original ROM files... Then follow the instructions - which are basically the same procedure you did to flash the ROM in the first place only using those ROM files instead of TX2 ROM files.

Last night I went through the entire forum making notes, and went through the install. Here are my notes gathered from the forum:
Palm T|X ROM2
Custom ROM for TX 6/18/2006
removed are: Addit, the "jake coco" video from media, launcher backrounds
added are: netfront, filez, drive mode, voice memo, sample backgrounds
graffiti 1.99
6/18 small fonts for netfront
6/20 version with working drivemode
6/20 Quick tour removed
Drive mode works
Install instructions:
1. download http://www.palmpowerups.com/file/TX2.ROM.zip?uniq=56
2. extract it to card directly
[unzipped to 16M SD card using PC card reader]
Palm/Launcher/
TXUpdater.prc
TXUpdater_enUS.prc
Palm/TXUpdate/
overflow.zip.a.pdb
overflow.zip.b.pdb
overflow.zip.c.pdb
overflow.zip.d.pdb
overflow.zip.e.pdb
RomUpdater.prc
3. backup TX (NVBackup, not anything else)
[backed up everything to 2G card in T|X]
4. Hard reset TX (reset while holding down the power button)
to make sure of no conflicts with flasher application.
5. insert card
[16Meg SD with updates]
[NVBackup 'pristine' T|X to 16Meg SD card, ended up with 880K free.
Be sure to do this if you have the Palm 'upgrade' installed you may need]
6. Launch "TX updater"
7. Be sure you have plugged in power and battery fully charged.
8. click "proceed"
9. Update goes through 4 resets while installing. Don't panic :-)
10. Do a "selective restore" from NVBackup (from step 3)
just select all files then deselect applictions/data you don't want restored.
Included backgrounds too dark. I deleted and installed my own.
As I understand the hard reset process, there is a data base in ROM that has a list of 'stuff' that is copied to RAM. There is already a selective install list, when you select the language you want to use!
WIBNI on a hard reset, the user could select which optional applications were installed from ROM? Kind of like the language selection, default having everything checked and deselect the things you don't want installed to RAM. This would also take care of most of the requests for things to leave out.

Yes, just install the drive mode file(s) into ram. I had them on my TX priot to the rom flash.

Hi, im new in the list, my name is Fernando Barceló from Argentina.
I have a Palm Tx, my history with palms was: Palm pilot, Palm III, Palm IIIx, Palm IIIc, Sony UX40, Palm Tungsten, Treo 600 and now my loved Palm Tx
After this short presentation i must ask you for help
Recently I "upgraded" my tx with the palmtx upgrade firmware from this page, with some upgrade aplications, backgrounds, etc.
All seems to work Ok, no error was happend in the upgrade.
But now I dont have th wifi icon, if I try to scan networks with wifi-where I can see the networks in range, but if I try to connect to anyone, get a reset of the device.
If I check in the prefs, I also lost the Wi-Fi Preferences menu.
Do anyone know how can I fix it or can somebody send me the original firmware to put it bak?
Thanks a lot to everyone, specialy to dimitry for his work.

uff, the only way (right now i think) is to have the Palms WiFi security upgrade, wich costs you some money (about 5$). I do recomend to buy if you are going to have some enterprise connections, say in your office or at school, or even in at home? :p But i think its worth the price for the TX2 rom gadget.
After you have the Palm upgrade, you should be able to have your TX the way it came in the brand new box. And if you want to try the TX2 rom again, you will NOT have any troubles after restoring everything, you will be able to use your WiFi just like you were using it after the upgrade installation ;)
hope this helps,

Hi Dmitrygr!
Thank's for your knowledge, it's a pleasure to read about and try out all the things you create. Hope you realise that you could make loads of income on your skills, if you doesn't already!
I would be really happy if you or someone could help me out here!
I followed your install instructions like 10 times but when I reach the stage where I'm suppose to click "Proceed" (stage 8) a "Dbg Msg" tells me that there is a missing file, and that's the end of it.
I Started off with a Psion5 once, updated my life with a HP Jornada, bought a Sony Clie UX50 and now I'm a proud owner of a TX! I'm a very busy man and I love my TX, but I'm not that happy about the built in apps (Media, Calendar, Blazer, Expense) I don't use them and I would love to make space for something useful instead!
Please tell me what I do wrong! (have you updated TX2rom? Is it possible to erase Blazer, Media, Expense and Calendar as well?)
Thank YOu!
Happy End everyone!

Thank's! I will have a look in a few min.. I just have a question!! I'm taking the chance to do some experiments now when I'm doing Hard resets over and over again. So I deleted everything that's possible to delete, and it ended up with 110.2mb free space! Suddenly the TX is realy fast, very big difference... What's that? The spce availiable or some files/apps that slowing the system down normally???
HIGH SPEED TX,,, but for the moment useless when it comes to WiFi and Mail...

Does this rom "upgrade" do anything with the sd card reading software on the rom? It seems that since I used this "upgrade" my palm can no longer read my 4gb sd card. Is this because of the "upgrade"?

I had 4GB PQI card with that same message I returned it for a Transcend. I am not sure if I downloaded some bad files are it was that way from the beginning. But it would not reformat for nothing. I had returned to an online site within a week for a new one

The TX doesn't support 4GB cards unless you use dmitry's FAT32 driver.
The ROM has not been updated to allow for application selections.

I just installed this fabulous TX ROM and so far everything runs perfectly. I must congratulate you for the work you've done. Thanx a million!
I second those who would like to keep only the basic software that makes our devices functional, let's say bluetooth, wifi, drive mode etc, etc. This way we could install the apps that we actually need. I hope you consider our requests and enhance the recognition you have gained around the globe for your magnificent work. All palm forums I have visited mention you great effort and contribution to palm users' needs.

Hi Dmitrygr, Do your TX2 rom support Chinese version palm TX ?
I have a Chinese version palm TX, I followed your instruction,
when I try tx updater, it show 'incompatible device only support palm tx'.
Why?

Maybe u have thinked of this, but i think it worth the shot.
I think the custom ROM should have the dmitry's and pruss's preference pannels, since some of them are very useful, and in case of not using it, u can always disable it.
The main pannel i think we could need is the power button one, since it allows you to do Hard Resets with a broken power button (which seems to be a very common problem on TX's), FixField, CenterMenu and other nice pannels and apps should be included too (OffFlush should be a pannel!)

Seeing this trhead made me finally decide to go forward with the custom ROM. I followed the instructions, backed up with NVbackup, hard reset, flashed the ROM. Verifed that Netfront was working. Restored from NV backup.
After the restore Netfront is gone. What's the deal? Seems I didn't gain a single thing???

Yah A nvbackup with a full restore covers your nvfs with everything that was there and such will overwrite what was on it BUT NOT THE ROM!! so iv for what ever unknown reason you want to get out of dmirty's custom rom (no idea you would want to) buy hte palm TX wifi upgrade patch and run that to go back.

Dimitrygr,
I have searched the net and the site PalmPowerUps without any success in finding the T/X 2 ROm update? Any help would be much appreciated! I know you have gone over this before, but with the update is there a step by step upgrade pathway? I just don't want to screw up my T/X (new) which is replacing my old LifeDrive. I really appreciate what you have done.
Thanks,

I tried, everything OK till "_newarc". When I run it, it seems OK, but I can't find the archived files in \Palm\TXUpdate
did I something wrong?
I also was wondering if I could remove language files, I would just keep the _enUS and _frFR files and remove the others (save about 3Mo) can I remove them?

1) You can remark line "del overflow.zip" in _newarc.bat and check it's (overflow.zip) size. It must be of defined size (see readme). If not, try add something to "Files" or make overflow.zip manually with other command string keys and switches. See *.bat files and do likewise.
2) I think you can delete language files that are'nt used.
But i'v no tested it.

It may still not work that way... What I had to do was to create zip archive with -1 switch (minimum compression), which was still too small, and then manually overwrite some files with no compression to increase the zip size. A bit cumbersome, but it worked... :)
2) I think you can delete language files that are'nt used.

Yes, you definitly can. I've tested it! :)

lemme get this straight - i read the readmes and i really would like to create my own ROM (just as in the happy JackFlash/JackSprat days!). but still, before i brick my TX, there are still some questions ...
- how do i backup my original ROM ? (or is the only way to ´backup´buying the ESU ?)
- am i FREE in deleting / adding files to my liking?
- is it true, the smaller the ROM, the bigger the dbcache, i.e. does it do good to overall speed if i just delete uneccesary files and do NOT add any?
@razoff & =froggy= : i do not find the defined size within the readme, maybe thats because my russian is not too good :). whats the size the zip has to be? (guess that answers my question no. 2+3 if it has to be of a certain size ...)
