This is going to be a good news for those who have hold their horses for a palm handheld. After much talk about why SONY did not equip with more than 16mb ram, click the following link and you will find out. Of course the good news is ... more RAMs are on its way ....

That's great! Makes me wonder if the rumored Clies in May will be able to take advantage of this or not.

I wonder if program size will get bigger too . . . I can see games getting a LOT better. ;)

Guess the question is when will 5.2.1 become available? Knowing Sony, it will be a couple of months after this release.

When will we see a SJ33-like with OS5.2.1, 32 Megs Ram for $300.

any ideas when OS6 will be released?

As long as the internal RAM is not FAT, we are still going to need our expansion cards. This would free up a lot of room on my expansion cards by letting me move all of my large program files and database files back to RAM, keeping my pictures, movies, mp3's, and documents on the expansion cards.

I remember going from 8meg to 16. Stepping up to 128... I dont' think I would know what to do with it. Of course, 4 weeks later I would have it full again... :D

First, more memory is always a welcome addition, and I'm glad Palm has enabled this, but...

How is this a newsworthy event? I mean, I'm sure we're all excited about more memory, but why the heck wasn't an expanded memory range a part of the OS5 roadmap from the beginning? It doesn't take a marketing genius to know that onboard memory was a major negative comparison factor between PalmOS devices and PocketPCs, or was PalmSource too blinded by the ridiculous misconception that Palm's can do everything PPCs do with a tenth of the memory and computing power of a PPC?

This would be newsworthy if somone other than PalmSource had figured this out, but why is it a "breakthrough" when the OS creator itself does it? I'm sorry, this just seems to me like patting yourself on the back for fixing a problem that you introduced in the first place.

Whew! Okay, I'm done with my rant now... calming down...

Bring on the 128MB clies!

Slinger I was just thinking the same thing. And 128mb are you kidding me! they just figured out how to do this now! That means we won't see this for at minimum a year. who doesn't already have a 128mb card right now that full of crap. It will take me ten seconds to fill 128mb. I"m not saying I don't want it but I assumed they were working in the R&D breakthough lab on 1 and 5gbs. You can bet developers will gobbel that space up in a second. 128mb of ram was something I was expecting to see in a palm handheld by the end of the year at the latest. Not oooh look we've just figured out how we might do this someday in Palm os 9.

I agree with slinger I'm mostly anoyed that the implication is that this is a breakthough. It's like Electric car manufacturers saying "Look what we've done we've just descovered a way to make a car that can get you all the way to the end of the street on ony one charge! (radio usage not included)" All this really tells me is that it's going to be a long time before I'm going to be able to upgrade to something worthwhile in the RAM department.

i just got the nz90 two weeks back.

this would have helped back then!!

At least would have saved a bit not buying the damn thing with 16 MB!!

I disagree that we won't see this for a long time... well technically.
I bet second party mods will begin to appear soon after os 5.2.1 makes its appearance. So the brave can send of their units for warranty killing upgrades (hell I would).

The one thing we can always be sure of from Sony is that Sony will do the unexpected. Look at the NZ. Did the milk the pixel count up as one might have expected. NOPE. 320 to 2 Megapixels in a single bound. Whos to say that Sony won't go straight from 16 MB straight to 128 MB.

Of course, Who says that they will.

I am sure you are right.... The new XP ups the memory "possible" to something like 32 physical gig (remember Windows os have same size disk cach, so the true limit is 64 gig combined virtual and real). But that is still a ways away from happening.

With palms, we will most likely see the next model employing 32mb with storage doubling every year or year and a half until it maxes out at 128mb.

because camera technology had been moving forward to the point where 1 megapixel cameras were a piece of cake, so they upped the bar one notch.

IF, and I say IF Sony does the unexpected, they will double the Pocket PC by going for 64. But there is little need to jump straight at 128, it leaves them no room for expansion, and customers griping two years from now why there is no improvement in space. You never play ALL your cards at once. you can be reserved and play them slowly, or play your big cards and hold on to a few....

very well put, SamuraiCatJB, Sony had always been good at playing their cards. They're always where the money is & keep releasing new models in average of 6 months, whether be it notebooks, PDA, digital cams. & frankly tired of chasing after all their products. trying to be contempt with what I have now.

Actually we were speaking of Sony and the Tungsten is a Palm. Since palm made the leap then maybe Sony will feel the pressure I hope.
