Does anyone know if there is an Advance Wars type of game, similar to the game for the nintendo DS?

Not really. Best I can think up of are:
Aggression - like the board game Risk, played on a world "grid" map. Not unit types, it's more about numbers
Medieval Heros I & II - Troop movement is on a grid map as well. There are elements of managing resources/money and gathering it, as well as scouting and alliances. Combat has 4+ unit types where you watch direct them to fight like in an RTS.
May even have inventory management and experience levels to deal with as well
Warring Nations - I think this has the theme of Medieval Heros (knights, archers, gold) with the grander scale of Aggression (not just Europe, but the whole world)
FREEWARE titles
vavilon2 - some strategy game like Warcraft but with some RPG elements. As the 7.5MB .PRC file suggests, you’ll need quite some system resources to run this game
Iron Strategy - turn based game like chess or Advanced Wars
Robot Attack - looks like an interesting game, but unfortunately, I get an error message upon trying to run the game, followed by a forced soft reset
alien - played on a board grid like chess
Space War - Turn base battle with Star Trek ships on a hexagonal grid!
Ackwire - can't recall, but I think this is more of a building game like SimCity.

To an even lesser similarity to AW, Strategic Commander (shware). Layout of planets and you manage resources and gain research levels to beat out your opponent. So it's not just about quantity, also about quantity and managing the logistics of your fighting forces

Unless recently changed, Vavilon2 is not freeware. It's a huge download, with a matching price.
