Hi,
is it possible with zlauncher to launch the corresponding programm by tapping on one of the documents?

I know that you can easily categorize your documents by creator and type, but these icons are not launchable.

What I mean is that e.g. I have my ebooks (isilo, mobipocket etc.) in one category and if I tap on one of them, the corresponding reader is being started with that document.

Regards
Ben

Zlauncher will not do that. It does sound like something I would like for it to do so I think I will email the creators and suggest it. I hear that if it sound like a good idea to them it will be implemented within weeks of the request.

If you set the 'Launchable' bit on your database, it should work. At least, it did for my ShadowPlan databases. YMMV.

I think the originator of this thread does not want the app to launch when he taps it but wants the app to launch when an apps associated document is tapped.

That's what KCoram is talking about. Set the launchable bit on the database and it will have an icon in the launcher. Tap on it and the app will open right up to the database.

The one thing I would love to see in ZLauncher is to be able to choose your doc viewer like you can in launcher x. I use a really basic reader called Read Them All and I would like that to open when I tap on a doc instead of the ZLauncher reader. Can someone pass this along?

Oh. Thought it was about Lunchables. I'm hungry.:)

mikegehl - What I thought he was talking about and what I would like to see is this scenario. Tap on a .zip file and handzipperlite launches, tap on a .doc file and Quickoffice Quickword launches, tap on a .xls file and Quickoffice Quicksheet launches ....

It would act like Windows file associations in Windows.

That's what we are talking about (for the third time :)). Do you have FileZ? If so, open it and find your .doc file that you'd like to make launchable. Tap on the file name and tap "Details." Tap the "Attributes" tab and check the "Launchable" box.

Now go back into your launcher. If the doc file you just changed is in RAM or in the Palm / Launcher card category, it should show up as a launchable app. Tap on it and QuickWord should open with that doc open for reading / editing.

The "set the launchable bit" trick works for most databases, as long as the creator id of the database and the creator id of the application used to view it are the same. It probably won't work well with DOC files, since your typical reader doesn't have REAd as the creator ID.

Yes I do have Filez, but that is not what we are talking about ;-)

I know about the Attributes tab but that only works and show up with databases and executables not plain files like .zip, .doc, or .xls. Now thats what I'm talkin 'bout.

mikegehl - Did you actually try what you have suggested? I did and it did not work for me in either FileZ or Zlauncher. ;-)

OK - get back to the original post.

Aren't ISilo docs and MobiPocket databases (to which the original poster referred) pdb files? WordSmith docs are. I know the latest QO suite supports native Word docs, etc., but that's not what the original post was talking about.

And yes - If I change a WordSmith doc file's bit to "launchable," it shows up as an icon in the launcher. The same is true for a SmartList database. I believe it also works for a PictureGear photo, etc.

Guess we were comparing apples and oranges. :)

Yes, that is absolutely correct.
But what to do if creator IDs are not the same, e.g. 'Silo' and 'SilX' for Isilo files.

Second question:
I noticed that all my documents formerly 'PPrs' had suddenly changed to 'REAd' on the same day, same time. Thus at first the 'set launchable' trick didn't work. What happened here?

Which application has the creator id 'REAd' and why did all my Palmreader files 'PPrs' changed to 'REAd'?

Hmm. perhaps they didn't change. And they all have a the same create date, because I made a complete restore that day.

Last question:
What can I do if I have my databases on expansion card?:
