I understand these can be a concern for some backups. Could someone explain what these are?
What are the most common ones I might have on my TX?
How does one disable them to do a backup?

NVBackup does a very good job of backing up no matter what you have running. I have had virtually no problems with it (except one beta build had a trouble with DES encryption, the encrytion has been changed to AES and the problem does not exist in the release versions).
If you really want to make sure you have nothing running in the bckground when you do a backup, use UnCahce. I suppose you could enable uncache with no applications except NVBackup in the UnCache list. Then do a scheduled reset before your backup (I use 2PlayMe to do this, but I understand PalmaryClock also does this). After a reset only the apps listed in the UC list will run in the background, or more accurately receive the launch code 5 after a reset which allows an app to register for notifications from the OS.
