to all...
as ive mentioned in this thread
http://www.1src.com/forums/showpost.php?p=925824&postcount=241
i would be coming back to the PalmOS world - is there anything that i should know about TCPMP when being used in the VZ90? stuffs like optimum settings? limitations?
something like, video bitrates above 800kbps is not recommended, or video sizes should be at most 320x240, or that the framerate should be less than 20fps....?
thanks in advanced...!!!

320x480 @ 400 kbps video w/ 64kbps audio shoudl be fine. my th can do that
instead try to use FMP, it iwll support much better quality [using hardware codecs]

but can FMP support DivX-formatted files? or should i remain with those created by IC2.x - the MPEG4-formats (or maybe those that were made for the PSP)...?
btw, here in Japan, we have some sort of "PSP/iPod Recorder" at it costs only US$99... (FYI)

Yea I agree with those setting expect you probably want a width of 480 and a height of 320 ;). LOL. I usually coded my videos to 384kbps @ 64kbps and they came out great. :) I think CLIE's do better with FMP and Palm's with TCPMP.

DivX not supported by FMP. Only Sony-provided codecs. You can only use Sony MP4 format, MPEG-1, and MQV (Quicktime).
Look at my guide for transcoding video to Sony MP4 format...

just a follow-up on a previous post...
i was playing around with my PSP, and an app that encodes DVDs for viewing in the PSP:
http://www.pqdvd.com/psp/
i found that videos created by this were also viewable on the VZ90 - and it really looks GREAT...!!!!

I like both FMP and TCPMP. Althrough TCPMP probably get used more since i am sick of the restrictions of MP4 format on sony clie.
TCPMP has options to select the video quality (normal, Low, very low) this significantly boosts the play back speed for video but reduces the rendered resolution of the orignal video file (Ie you will be able to play some of your video files without have to re-encoding them). I cant really say it has limitations other than the fact that type of videos you can play back is limited by the CPU/BUS speed of the PDA. It file format support is quite extensive.
I use FMP (MP4) for videos that are
----------------------------------
- 29.976/30 Frames Per Second
- 4:3 Aspect Ratio
Encode Settings: MPEG4 - 768kbit AAC 128kbp stereo 29.976f/30Fps 320x240 res
OR
- 23.976 Frames Per Second
- 16:9 Aspect Ratio cropped
Encode Settings: MPEG4 - 768kbit AAC 128kbp stereo 23.976fps 480x272 res
Thats the only time i use FMP/MP4 is for videos that fit the above profile.
And Tcpmp for videos that are
-----------------------------
- 15/23.976/25/29.976fps
- 4:3/16:9 aspect ratio or non standard size like a lot of web videos.
- Live-Action, CG, Anime (Subtitles on MP4 are a lot less sharper)
Encode Settings (DVD movies): DivX 3.11 - 768/640kbit low motion, keyless, 22050khz stereo IMA ADPCM. 23.976/25fps (Bicubic resize filter) 480x260 res
Encode Settings (4:3 aspect) : DivX 3.11 - 768kbit low motion, keyless, 22050khz stereo IMA ADPCM. 29.976 (Bicubic resize filter) 384x240 res
If you want a big boost in speed in TCPMP use ADPCM compression (Use IMA ADPCM since the microsoft one seems to introduce static when played back wiht tcmp) for audio (the rate mentioned takes the same amout of space as a 440100khz, stereo 128kbit mp3) since the cpu will have a lot less strain in decoding the WAV compressed format rather than the MP3 compressed format, hence you can then allocate more bitrate to the video. If DSP audio accerlation support is possibly added in TCPMP it may make mp3/AAC decoding a lot faster. ADPCM even with 4:1 compression ratio will still increase the file size somewhat over a normaly divx/mp3 video.
When re-encoding the max horizontal/vertical resoultion you go to is 480x320 since that is the screen resoultion of the VZ-90 and anything above is lost when resized to fit the displayed on the screen. Unless you encoded in 16:9 and want to do a Pan and scan on purpose using the options in TCPMP but then you might as well just crop the edges.
Fastest settings for tcpmp are to turn the GE2D 2d driver accerleration support on, dithering off, all colour/saturations/contrast/gamma settings set to 0. and if the screen backligth keeps turning off after 3 minutes then turn on battery override manger.
They are basically the max quality settings i could get before the VZ90 would start chuggin and dropping frames. battery life will be alot better with FMP as well because of the hardware support. rather than jsut raw cpu.
hmm i guess that wasnt a very simple answer. you can probably tell i spent many a frustrated hours trying to get the right mix for video on this piece of hardware :|

I just convert to PSP, and it works fine in TCPMP and the Media Launcher Movie app.

thanks for the replies...
actually - i also stumbled upon the fact that for PSP-encoded video files can be played in the default media player in the VZ90 (see post #6 in this thread)... and since those are quite good - i may go with those, not much thinking involved.
i was just wondering if are better settings (and limitations) that would make full use the handheld's horsepower (are there any?), and TCPMP

Recently encoded a file ripped from a DVD -19 mins lenght aprox- with PocketDivx Encoder version 0.3.60 with the following specs:
1032Kbps video @ 426x320 16:9 video running at 29.9 fps and 128kbps
or check link http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=113306
The quality is great, although lines appear a bit jagged but it seems to be a limitation on my T3 or in TCPMP cause when the file is played back in my computer it looks smooth.
The point is, am I getting a wrong spec or a T3 is capable of displaying video at such a high bitrate?
It drops frames while playing on TCPMP but only about 2% of them, so it is not noticeable.
